Funny thing, just last night I was discussing what makes a “hostile workplace” if I want to blame my mental illness on them.
If I remember right, in Kansas, first there has to be a physical injury such as stepping on my toe, then there has to be some “approved” sort of harassment. He said he had a client who had been harassed, and asked the client, “did he call you the n- word?” no. “Did he every tell jokes about blacks or otherwise disparage them?” no.
Turns out they could find no basis for a suit. Sorry, the guy may have been a jerk but only certain modes of being a jerk have been outlawed and his wasn’t one of them.
AFA hate crimes, I find it fascinating that THEY used to use thoughts and emotions as evidence for establishing a motive, but now the hate itself becomes a crime, or at least kicks this crime up a notch in severity.
This is an interesting concept, actually. In a way, you could say we are punishing the sinner for the sin itself as opposed to its consequence, but that we dare venture to divine the accused’s thoughts through legal process is a bit scary to me.
Message:
If you are going to do evil, do it for purely sefish motives and we all will understand. You’re just a victim. You’re sad. You’re needy. You’re misguided.
If you do evil in the name of God, or any Cause Greater Than Oneself – whether liberalism or conservatism or racism or any other ism – then you are a monster. Why? Because you resist responding to typical “personal” pleasure/pain centers, and continue to fight against your own personal comfort even unto death. That means you cannot be controlled as long as the Greater Cause is more important than your own selfish interests.
