I guess a clothing thread would fall under “family life”?

I’m not creating this thread with any particular theology behind it. This is not meant to become a veiling vs. non veiling thread. Rather, I have seen some old pictures with women and men wearing hats when they dress up and it just looks good. It just adds that extra little bit of class. You can tell they took some time with their clothing to make It look right.

It seems like fashions today have just gotten so sloppy. People seem to think they can go out in anything. Sometimes I feel like I am just seeing a little too much of a stranger. They mays be covered head to toe in big sweatpants and a hoodie and are physically covered, but it kind of feels like they should be sitting on the couch drinking a beer in that outfit rather than out at dinner or at church. They are covered, but the outfit is more what I would expect to see if I was a good friend or family member at their house. What happened to having clothing for different occasions, rather than trying to make your most comfortable clothes forced into any occasion? Hats are part of this. With the exception of the most casual baseball caps, you really just don’t see hats.

And they are useful! The right hat can do wonders for protecting you from sun, heat, cold, etc.

That being said, I would hate for hats to come back as some kind of “modesty thing” because people seem to take some of those fashions and run a little too far with them and try to turn plain old anybody fashion into too much of a religious thing. Rather, I would like to find ways to add some nice classic hats to my wardrobe just for the fact that they look classy. However, I also don’t want to look weird because no one really wears them now.

Thoughts?

I live in the south, and I’m seldom outside without a hat. I’m usually dressed casually, so my cover of choice is a baseball cap or (in the summer) a floppy straw beach hat. When I’m biking, I’m wearing a bicycle helmet. I do have an Indiana-Jones-style dress hat (!), but I don’t wear it to church, because it’s yet one more thing to handle, and because there’s no place to put them.

I had some nice hats. A straw Panama, a felt fedora, etc. Brimmed hats, though, are problematic in places which are frequently windy/rainy. I have a US Army boonie hat that I like to wear in the summer, keeps the sun and light rain off my pate, and the chinstrap (fastened behind my head) keeps it on in windy weather.

Another problem is that a lot of places, like many restaurants, do not have somewhere to put your hat. So you try to hang it on the corner of your chair, or put it on the chair next to you, etc, and hope it doesn’t get sat/stepped/spilled on.

The ubiquitous American ball cap, for all its faults, at least is more portable, can often collapse into a pocket, or be stepped/sat on and be no worse for wear. And with a bill instead of a brim, you can turn your head just to toward/against the wind, and if all else fails, pull your hood over it.

The other problem with hats for men is of course also getting men to remember when to take the thing off:
  • in church;
  • in the mess (unless you want to buy a round for the house);
  • when at the table;
  • when speaking to a lady;
  • when in an elevator with a lady;
  • tipped when passing a church, lady, war memorial, etc.
I think the main negative thing is having one more piece of clothing that you are expected to don/doff at particular times, often as a rule of etiquette. I think headgear is more governed by etiquette than any other piece of clothing. I mean, you don’t have to untie your shoelace in an elevator, and you really shouldn’t take off your pants in a restaurant. :eek:

I agree! There’s a lot to be said for elegance in men and women. Without being too judgemental about it - and I’m only just 39! - I remain underwhelmed by a lot of casual clothing and I wonder why people don’t make more of an effort on Sundays.

I’m a skirts and dresses sort of person because they suit me better and feel free and comfortable. Joyfully, 50s style dresses are back in fash, so I’m stocking up! My family make a point of dressing for Mass, because that’s how it was in my family, and my husbands, also. I’ve added some nice hats, also; for sunny days and Sundays. Here in Ireland; a brolly is also a must! 😊

There’s a lot to be gained for a little extra effort. You feel taller, slimmer and more confident (I am average height and build) and people respond to this confidence in positive ways; being smily and chatty. It’s a win-win! 😊

My 23-year-old son is something of a dandy and likes to dress up - which includes wearing a hat. I’ve told him that he likes showing up his friends, who still dress American style. 😉

Husband wears a ballcap, which I don’t care for (understatement). But he doesn’t wear it with the good clothes he wears to church & social events.

I think your right we see way too much of people these days I mean here where I live women either have on the most pitiful rags of clothing or they dress like hookers:eek: the men dress very sloppy as well I mean I have around the house clothes then my jeans button down and apron and tichel for the street I try to look neat and modest but Sunday are dress up days it bothers me to see halter tops and jeans in church I’m young still but I just don’t remember people walking around so sloppy like they do now

I would love to see 40s and 50s style clothes brought back for men and women modest and elegant not sweats and hype revealing clothes

I would love to see hats brought back, hopefully the etiquette as well so it wouldn’t simply be another fashion fad. Humans wore head coverings for the longest time. What happened to stop that? Maybe it was automobiles?

Maybe more of us would wear hats if they weren’t all “one size fits all”! :rolleyes:

Personally, I can’t help but think hats are somewhat making a come back. In Canada, in the summer, a lot more people (mostly women) seemed to wear hats for the sun. A few years ago, when the 70’s came back, I use to wear a hat that was 70’s style.

The problem with hats is they can be expensive and if they don’t match your clothing just look out of place. I don’t care to buy all my clothes the same colour. Also, I bought a really nice hat for $45. It is more suitable for summer. But when I wear it, I sweat tremendously and the inside was getting really dirty really fast.

As for clothes, I personally find it very inconvenient to have one set of office clothes, one set of weekend nice clothes, one wet of around the house clothes and one set of clothes for special occasions like a wedding. I buy dresses that can be worn to the office and use the same ones for special occasions to cut down on the clothing bill.

However, I remember as a kid, anytime I had to dress up, it was so uncomfortable. The sleeves in any blouse or dress my mom bought me were so constrictive I could barely move my arms. There just seems to be something about dressy clothes that is SO uncomfortable.

As for jeans to church. Before I owned a car, I would have to plan my daily outings around a bus schedule. I could not go home between the gym and church to change. And I was not going to wear a nice dress to the gym only to get back into it after a sweaty work out. I think people are so busy they plan their wardrobe for the whole day, not just one activity

I love the fifties and early sixties attitude toward clothing too, hats, gloves for day driving and evening and so on.

I also miss seeing the professionals wearing uniforms: white dresses for nurses with their hats that symbolized something too- then the dentist had a different white coat then the doctor, the gas attendants had uniforms, the hair salon people and so on…

Things were more genteel then, and so were the clothes. My dad always wore a hat, even when it fell out of style until 2004 when he passed. The hats were more modern then a felt fedora, but he always had one, all the time, and knew the etiquette. it was charming to watch.

Someone once called it “the casualization of America”. I’m probably dating myself, but when I was a child we actually dressed up when we were visiting relatives or went uptown on the bus to shop or to attend church or for social gatherings, I remember my siblings and I raising a fuss when we had to put on Sunday clothes just to visit my grandparents. Goodness how things have changed. At mass I see everything now and I don’t like it. I wish we would all wear our best when we sit before the Lord. I’ve worn a hat all of my life. I mostly wear baseball type hats now because I’ve sadly to say become more casual in my dress also. I think hats make a statement and I think most men would be surprised to see how good they look in a hat. I’ve been waiting for hats to come back in style, but I’m pretty sure they’re not going to. As for you I would say give it a try and wear them for yourself because you like it.

I can totally understand why a kid would raise a fuss over that. Good clothes are NOT comfortable especially for children. I can’t remember how often adults told me I looked good and I had to make a conscious effort not to move 1 milimeter the clothes were so tight and itchy. I think if the adults are going to talk among themselves, kids should be able to wear clothes they are comfortable to play in

I feel like a lot of this could be avoided by actually listening to children where possible.

I have a couple hats that I wear for sun protection, but no baseball caps.

And I have a nice felt hat similar to a fedora but never wear it. My wife says I’m still too young (age 47).

I’ve always liked hats–but like sunglasses, they’re also just another thing to carry around. I lost my last pair of sunglasses over a year ago and haven’t replaced them yet because of that.

Grand-pere presented me with a grey top hat.
I wear it to church on Sundays in the warmer months.
A few gentlemen have really become interested in the top hat.

My dear dad always wore a hat with his suit. Don’t know what you’d call it, but they looked like the ones you’d see Sinatra wear on an album cover. He always looked very dapper.

My DH, on the other hand, wouldn’t be caught dead in a hat of any kind, ball cap, included. The only time I’ve ever seen him wear a hat was his uniform cap when he was a Marine 40 years ago.

Looking at pictures of my parents wedding (1962) , all of the women wore hats and gloves. There’s one picture in particular that was taken from up in the choir area, and the guests look like a sea of hats! I have to admit, it looks really nice and there’s something appealing to me about how much more “formal” things were back then. Do I think I would always want to dress up to that extent? I don’t know, but I also don’t like how casual people take things these days.

I too have found the dress much too casual for church. Only way to correct it is to start with oneself. I’ve started to buy dresses and skirts and put outfits together for Sunday. Still think slacks can be appropriate if tailored and put together.

Hats are lovely but having worn them years ago there is a lot that goes into it. When hats were in vogue, one usually had a hat for each outfit. Veils are less expensive and go with all. However, they just don’t go with pants.

I think we should spend more time on selecting our clothes for Mass.
