I was wondering the same thing. The article says they’re to “protect anonymity”, but for what end? Also, what’s the history behind the ghoulish style of the hoods? Why not just a mask?Neat photos. Is this a public penance? Are the hoods of some because they don’t want others to know who requires penance? I guess I understand, but, then again. don’t we all need to do penance, so why the hoods?
I am Sicilian, and in my Dad’s village there is a similar procession on Divine Mercy Sunday. There’s a really similar… I guess event… going on in the town I’m studying in this semester in Italy. It’s a celebration for Holy Week, and has been going on every night since I believe Tuesday. My window faces the main church in the town so I can see the end of the ceremony from my room. It’s quite an experience.
