Have I sinned? Would this be a sin?

This is going to sound like a rediculous question but I don’t have the answer. A few years ago I lost some jewelry and asked God to help me find it and said that I would not buy any jewelry for myself if he helped me find it. I don’t remember how I worded it exactly - it if was I would never buy any forever either way, or if I wouldn’t buy any jewelry if I found what I was looking for. Either way I never did find it. I have not bought myself any jewelry. My family member sent me a watch for my birthday and I exchanged it for a different watch. But in the past, the way that I occasionally treat myself is by buying a little pendant or whatever. I really enjoy jewelry and I was wondering, is this an oath that I took? I know now that the bible says not to do this, I did not know it at the time. Even if you do make a promise, I believe it’s supposed to be for a sin - like I will not break the law or go against God’s law. Buying yourself some earrings is not a sin. It seems rediculous now to me that I did what I did over something that wasn’t even a sin. So…does this mean that I can not ever buy myself a little something that makes me happy? I know now that the bible says let your yes be a yes and your no be a no - and do not make an oath at all. Was what I said an oath? Can I never buy myself any jewelry?

This sounds like such a stupid question and maybe it is. I just get overly worried though and am worried that I will offend God or break an oath and that would be bad.

I think we are all sinners and the ONLY one who keeps his promises is God. This is also a good example one why you should NEVER bargain with God. We are only human!!😉

I would ask your priest. 👍

Then go enjoy yourself!!

No, it does not sound to me like you have sinned. And you did not find your piece of jewelry, so why were you not buying anything? The problem would be in excess vanity. Do you put your jewelry before God? Do you buy what most would consider to be too much jewelry? Do you avoid spending money in things that are much more important to buy jewels; I mean more than once in a real long while? No? Then you have nothing to worry about.

I believe in keeping promises to God…I think He holds us to them more than we realize. However, if you aren’t even sure of the wording and your intention is just (you want to do the right thing), then I can see where you are confused. If it were me, I’d ask a priest at the end of my next confession and see what he says. Trust the priest’s advice, follow it, and be at peace.

Be well,
P.

I don’t know. Why don’t you run it past your priest the next time you go to confession?

Maybe next time you lose a piece of jewelry, you might want to ask St. Anthony in prayer to help you find it instead of promising God that you’ll do whatever if it’s found. Just a thought here. St. Anthony is very used to me asking him desperately to find my car keys, my glasses, and a whole lot of things on a fairly frequent basis, and God doesn’t mind it in the least, as far as I know.

Go talk to your priest.

Stop making these types of “bargains” with God. These types of things can be symptoms of compulsive behavior so talk to your priest about scrupulosity too.
