was the author confused?

I find the following verse one of the most interesting ones in the Quran:

4:171 O People of the Book! Commit no excesses in your religion: Nor say of Allah aught but the truth. Christ Jesus the son of Mary was a messenger of Allah, and His Word, which He bestowed on Mary, and a Spirit proceeding from Him: so believe in Allah and His messengers. Say not “Three” : desist: it will be better for you: for Allah is One God. Glory be to Him: above having a son. To Him belong all things in the heavens and on earth. And enough is Allah as a Disposer of affairs

Literal:You The Book’s people, do not exaggerate/exceed the limit in your religion, and do not say on God except the truth , but the Messiah, Jesus, Mary’s son God’s messenger and His word/expression He threw it away to Mary, and a Soul/Spirit from Him; so believe with God, and His messengers, and do not say: “Three.” Stop best for you, but God one God, His praise/glory that to be for him a child; for Him what in the skies/space and what in the earth/Planet Earth, enough/sufficient with God guardian/protector .

Add this to the fact that in the 4th century there was a group of misguided Collyridiansians in Arabia, mostly women, who worshipped the Blessed Virgin.

CHAPTER 2: JESUS IN THE QURAN

JESUS - HIS TITLES

Like this: -

*Though Jesus is mentioned by name in twenty-five places in the holy quran he is also addressed with respect as:“ibne Maryam” - son of Mary;as Masih (Heb) messiah - translated as Christ; “abd-ullah” servant of Allah; “rasul -ullah” - messenger of Allah.

He is spoken of as “the word of god”, as “the spirit of god”, as a “sign of god”, and numerous other epithets of honour spread over fifteen different chapters. the holy quran honours this mighty messenger of god, and the Muslims have not fallen short over the past fourteen hundred years i doing the same. there is not a single disparaging remark in the entire quran to which even the most jaundiced among the Christians can take exception.*

If Jesus was spoken in Quran as “The Word of God” and as “The Spirit of God” then there is no need for further discussion or any need for asking any questions because these two statements make Jesus automatically God. Because no man can get this title of “Word of God” and “Spirit of God.” These are titles of God and calling an ordinary man “Word of God” and "Spirit of God amounts to blasphemy. When we look in the Bible we see that Jesus was called the “Word of God” in Bible too.

schaik~

are you quoting from the book “Islam Revealed” by Anis Shorrosh?

that is a wonderful book, and so helpful…

i have heard stories of Muslim clerics truly delving into the implications of what the Quran says about Jesus, and coming to trust Him as Lord and Saviour through of those studies.

Think of the Qur’an as the map to guide us in our journey through life and think of the Sunnah (this would include the ahadith) of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) as the legend by which to correctly read this map.

Only a fool will try to read a map without at the same time referring to the accompanying legend.

And so, Muslims really have no fear of misinterpreting the Qur’an because we have the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) to refer to in order for us to obtain the most accurate interpretation of the Qur’an possible.

What does this mean? (pbuh)

I have wondered that for a LONG time and was afraid to show my ignorance, but I dont really care any more. So could you please explain?

Thanks,

‘pbuh’ is the abbreviation for ‘peace be upon him’

Muslims will commonly add this salutation whenever we mention the names of any of the Prophets (peace be upon them all).

It is a sign of utmost respect and reverence for them when we do this.

It comes from a hadith where Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: 'Send the blessing on God’s messengers and prophets for God sent them as He sent me’.

the Quran affirms that Jesus is a Word from Allah (3:45), and also a sign from Allah, and this echoes the opening lines of John’s Gospel.

in the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God (John 1:1), only of course Muslims do not believe that Jesus is eternal, or God.

yet the Quran does call Jesus a “word from Allah”, and other titles of Jesus (such as al-Masih) within the Quran agree with Christian titles.

the Quran also affirms the virgin birth by a miracle of the Ruh Quddus (sometimes translated as “Holy Spirit” or “divine power”), and affirms that Jesus was drawn near unto God, and that those who follow Jesus will be esteemed on the Day of Ressurection (3:55).

so there is quite a bit of over lap, though the Quran denies Jesus’ divinity, eternal nature, crucifixion, and bodily resurrection.

i agree with you that we have commons in many things as you said
we believe he is the massiah , and we believe in his miraclous birth and we believe he is the word of God , but from our view all these attributes have nothing to do with divinity

from our view , you are the ones who mistranslated or misinformed about him

anyway just as a brief answer , we believe that he is God’s Word, ("**Be!" **- and he was) which He bestowed on Maryam (Mary)

and we believe that God created him by his spirit , or with another words , he is spirit from God , and we believe either that adam be created from spirit of God , Adam and jesus (pbut) be created with the same manner

Probably the best and easiest explanation of Muslim beliefs on Christ I have read. Thank you elwill. It is always good to know what others believe, especially in these divisive times.

With all respect, how could we be the ones who misinterpreted Jesus when the apostles knew him personally? How did we get the message so wrong? And how is it that you are willing to take the word of one man more than six hundred years after the fact rather than the word of the apostles who were there at the get go, and who almost all died in agony as martyrs for their beliefs?

right, which is why the Quran links Adam and Jesus in Sura 3 Aya 59.

the Quran denies that Allah begets, and denies that Jesus is the son of Allah.

yet every human being who was born of a woman’s womb (as Jesus was) as begotten by something or someone, as a woman’s womb can not create life on its own.

many Muslims mistakenly believe that the virgin birth of the Bible somehow involved sex, which is untrue. we believe that Jesus was concieved by the Holy Spirit (Spirit of God) and so the fathering power that gave Jesus form in Mary’s womb came not from Josef, but from God Almighty, thus that Jesus is God’s only begotten Son.

according to the Bible, Adam was formed by God from the earth, but Jesus was concieved by the Holy Spirit. both are called sons of God, but whereas Adam was made from clay, the Bible states that Jesus is eternal, and was given life in Mary’s womb as a human being (incarnate) through the Holy Spirit.

I haven’t read Anis Shorrosh’s book, but judging from the content of the opening post it’s not a book anyone should be trusting if they want to understand the Qur’an. His ‘literal’ translation of 4:171 is nothing but a deliberate distortion. 4:171 is refuting both the Incarnation and the Trinity by ordering us not to say ‘three’, and then contradicts God having a son by saying that 'God is one object of worship ', which is the true meaning of Allahu ilahun wahidun. What does it mean to say that God is ‘one’ object of worship? This is a unique statement in the Qur’an, which is only ever used to refute Christian beliefs, as opposed to Allahu ahad (there is only one God), which is used far more frequently and in the context of refuting the beliefs of the Meccan Pagans. The difference is that Christians can get around Allahu ahad as they do believe that there is only one God, but that God consists of three persons, one of whom became physically incarnate on Earth. However, they cannot get around Allahu ilahun wahidun, a statement which rather than declaring that there is only one God, declares that there is no internal distinction within God; hence no Trinity, no Incarnation, no one ‘being of one substance with the Father’.

Also, if this weren’t enough 5:17 and 5:72 also specifically denounce the believe that Jesus is the Son of God.

how will you know what to think of the book if you’ve never read it?

realize that just as Muslims have an Islamic way of looking at the Gospels, so the Christians have a Christian way of looking at the Quran.

if you viewed the situation by muslims eyes , you will realize that we believe that quran is the word of God (directly) and his prophet mohammed (pbuh) is the prophet of God ( diretly)

when we compare what we believe to be words of God with some scriptures which is copy of copy of copy of translation from lost original one which supposed to be written by apostle. hence you can understand why we believe that its’s you who misinformed

elwil ~

actually, we do have original copies of the Injil.

we do not have translations upon translations as many believe, rather we have thousands of manuscripts in multiple languages, some dating from the inital decades of Jesus’ ministry, all in 97-99 percent agreement with one another.

none of the differences from manuscript to manuscript have any impact on the dosctrines of Jesus’ eternal Sonship, divinity, crucifixion for our sins, resurrection from the tomb, or role as mediator between man and God.

we also have many epistles from the disciples (John and Peter, for example) which affirm the apostles’ belief is Jesus as Lord and Savior and God’s Son, who was crucified for our sins and risen from the dead. early church documents and letters refering to these documents affirm the authorship of these epistles, and their early dates.

And again, if you look at scripture with Catholic eyes, along with the writings of the earliest Church fathers, you see that the Church and the key Catholic doctrines were in place very early on, so it’s not a case of the scriptures getting warped in translation. To simplify it to an extreme degree, the Church is not based on the scriptures, the scriptures are based on the Church.

Here’s one thing…I want answered. Why did Muhammad marry and consumated sex with a nine-year old Aisha. This is just despicable. Is this the kind of person they call a prophet?

i’m not sure if i understood your question
but quran says that God can create a man without father , as he did in beginning with adam when he created him without father nor mother
if you claim that jesus is son of god because he havn’t father , then adam was created in most miraclous manner ( without father and without mother )
quran just argue such logic
many Muslims mistakenly believe that the virgin birth of the Bible somehow involved sex, which is untrue. we believe that Jesus was concieved by the Holy Spirit (Spirit of God) and so the fathering power that gave Jesus form in Mary’s womb came not from Josef, but from God Almighty, thus that Jesus is God’s only begotten Son.
may be some muslims mistakenly think that somehow sex is involved ,
anyway our big differes is with divinity of jesus , ( regardless of the how he was born)
according to the Bible, Adam was formed by God from the earth, but Jesus was concieved by the Holy Spirit. both are called sons of God, but whereas Adam was made from clay, the Bible states that Jesus is eternal, and was given life in Mary’s womb as a human being (incarnate) through the Holy Spirit.
adam not called as a son of God because he was created from clay , there were many people called as sons of God and they were born normally

by the way i didn’t understand your comparison , i believe for example that adam was formed from the earth then God gave him the life from his spirit

30- 6This is the Knower of the unseen and the seen, the Mighty the Merciful,
7 Who made good everything that He has created, and He **began the creation of man from dust. ** 8 Then He made his progeny of an extract, of water held in light estimation.
9 Then He made him complete and breathed into him of His spirit, and made for you the ears and the eyes and the hearts; little is it that you give thanks.
