Head coverings are up to each individual.
Mantillas can be purchased through various catalogues including EWTN.

If you google chapel veils you will find many places are selling them online and some are not so expensive. Another place to try, if there are any Catholic books stores in your area. I have one near me and because more women are wearing them they have started stocking them for both girls and women.

It is a choice and up to each individual. I just pray more women will choose to cover.

In a similar line of thought, why have many modern “Nuns” thrown away their habits and opted for more worldly manners of dress?.
Maybe I am noticing this because I am a revert to the Catholic faith and when you haven;t seen something for a while and then come back and look at it you notice the changes more than when you are there all the time, but I remember when nun’s habits changed and alot of them through away the habit for modern clothing and then it was the rarity to find a nun in a habit.

It seems to me, though, that I am seeing more of the younger women that are choosing to go into the religious life choosing the habits.

Two things:
One parish I attend occasionally has had one nun for many years. When I left the church she was the only one. She wore modern street clothes. If you didn’t know her you wouldn’t know she was a nun. She is still there and still wears modern street clothing but a convent was built down the street from the parish and now the church has more nuns and they all wear the long habits. It’s very beautiful.

We also had a Catholic women’s conference in our area not too long ago. It attracted alot of nuns from near and far and it was really neat to see all these habits. It was neat too because the conference was held in a public building and all over the place were Catholic nuns walking around. I don’t remember seeing so many sister’s in habits for along time, well since grade school.

I think the times they are a changing.

In regards to threads like this one, my initial thought is always: “Why is it a man writing the OP?” 🙂 I could get defensive like some women and tell the OP to stop judging by appearances (Jn. 7:24). But I’m not feeling angry or defensive. The OP has the right to think and say what he wants. My thought (as a woman) on the matter is this: It is true in today’s society there is a larger lack of humility than there was, let’s say, before Vatican II. However, this lack of humility is found in all of humanity. The grievous offenses committed in the Church today are committed by both men and women. In this way, it’s the same as it’s always been. A woman who wears a head covering can be as holy or as unholy as the woman who doesn’t wear the head covering and/or wears pants. An order of nuns who do not wear a habit can do just as much work for the kingdom as an order of nuns who wear a habit. Modesty and humility must first be found in the heart and then they will be apparent in what we wear and how we conduct ourselves. (We’ve all heard a thousand times how) God looks into the heart. It is man who sees outward appearances. I know who I want to be more like.

A salient insight in the whys and wherefores of religious garb, or lack thereof.

Because it sounds patronising and demeaning. Didn’t you realise that? How strange.
Er…no!

But this forum is filled with patronising and demeaning statements though. You have your work cut out for you, Paperwright!

Got get 'em!! 👍👍👍

We can not judge what is in the hearts of others. This is not charitable.

Wearing a head covering (Mantilla) is an act of humility and respect.
Those who think someone is merely “showing off” are the ones who truly have concerns about current practices not being holy or respectful enough.

1 Corinthians 11:2-16

Modest dress slacks or a pant suit is very appropriate clothing for Mass.

From Cardinal Raymond Burke:
“Thank you for your letter …The wearing of a chapel veil for women is not required when women assist at the Holy Mass according to Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite.
It is, however, the expectation that women who assist at the Mass according to the Extraordinary Form cover their heads, as was the practice at the time that the 1962 Missale Romanum was in force.
It is not, however a sin to participate in the Holy Mass according to the Extraordinary Form without a veil.”

Clearly wearing a Mantilla (head covering) is an approved option at both Forms of the Mass.
This post stands.
The dissention amongst those who label themselves Catholic, rather than being so judgmental is very sad.
Judgmental opinons that have nothing to do with Faith and Morals are harmful to those who seek the truth.
We should all strive for the truth so we do not lead others into error.

You are so very right. Once we get our hearts right with God it begins to become apparent in all we do. Not just the clothes we wear but how we act, think, speak and just live. It doesn’t do any good to follow the rituals just to be following the rituals if we don’t have our hearts right but a good sign of having our hearts right is our obedience to God and that shows up in our actions.
We can only be responsible for our own actions and what an inspiration we can be to others. When I see sisters in their habits or in action it reminds me of eternal things. I am reminded of God and Jesus and it inspires me to try to live a little better than what I do, to get closer to God. Kind of like iron sharpening iron. It doesn’t mean a sister who doesn’t wear a habit isn’t living for God, but it is the same way when I see anyone trying to live for God. I am encouraged to do the same and one of the things, because I am a woman, that encourages me is when I see women dressing modestly in obedience to God. I am reminded that God is no respecter of persons and what he does for one or calls one to do he can do for another and I am reminded I can live for him also.
We’re not meant to keep our relationship to Jesus to ourselves, tucked away in our hearts but be lights on a hill. Our culture so desperately needs women shining their modest little lights for God.

Yes we have ; we truly have lost something amazing and vital to the continuation of the church’s ability to save souls from satan. I know mine is a voice crying in the wilderness but we have lost something fundamental. We have become so used to democracy; to having our say in the way we now culturally expect to do. We believe in a democracy as expressed by what we see in the running of our countries. But their is no democracy ; there is party politics and concealment of vital information which only stifles democracy as ultimately the people are kept in the dark about the real issues facing them. They vote for a candidate because of the take they have on an issue but of course if that is against the party line they cant vote that way. Of cousre I am rambling on in order to keep you in anticipation for what we have lost. But it is actually close to the democracy we have lost.

We have become like the politics of the west; ignorant of the real critical issues that threaten the very core of our church and kept occupied with triviality in comparison so we can be further kept from these. We are labeled and partified and encouraged to be antagonistic to anyone who is not in our party. Somehow we are right the rest are wrong.

WE HAVE LOST THE ABILITY TO SEE satan AT WORK IN OUR CHURCH making us more concerned with decoration and presentation than substance.

MASS; EUCHARIST;CONFESSION;ROSARY would be a good practice no matter what language or dress worn.

James 4:11-12 (New International Version 1984, ©1984) 11

Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it. 12 There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you—who are you to judge your neighbor?

Luke 6:41-42 (New International Version 1984, ©1984)

41 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

Mark 12:32-34 (New International Version 1984, ©1984)
32 “Well said, teacher,” the man replied. “You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him. 33 To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

34 When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And from then on no one dared ask him any more questions.

I am a sinner and know I am only a fool; but I worry and all that concerns me is to focus my energies on what will bring people closer in their hearts and minds to God and for me its as simple as listening to Gods words, recieving the Eucharist in the proper state, working as they can within the spheres of their lives for the good of others and prayers ; more prayers especially the Rosary for conversion of sinners and souls in purgatory. Everything else comes second place.

When the beast roars ; I want a Church that is United in opposition.

How terrifying the thought
Matthew 7 (New International Version 1984, ©1984)

21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers

**How much the need **

1 Peter 2:1-5 (New International Version 1984, ©1984)
1 Peter 2
1 Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. 2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

The Living Stone and a Chosen People
4 As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him— 5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

My humble thoughts on the matter 😊

I remember wearing small chapel veils and we never had competition to see whose was the fanciest. That must have been something local in your area.
If nothing else, they were good conversation pieces. 🙂

Just like wearing ties when men used to have to wear them. Seemed to break the tension at meetings. “Hey, I like your tie.” 🙂

I think some of you are going too far in making fun of other Catholics and what is important to them. Time for confession.

Many women who attend the Latin Mass wear head coverings out of Respect for Jesus.
Can we ever give Him too much respect ?

Many women who attend the Novus Ordo Mass on EWTN wear head coverings.

About 50% of the women in my Parish wear head coverings (mantillas) at Mass.

Why do you think it is so important to insult the traditions of others ? No don’t answer, I don’t really care. Talk to God about your issues.

Maybe I’m wrong…but your post seem like they are judgemental to those of us who do not feel called to wear a head covering…🤷

If someone feels called to wear a head covering…great…but to those of us who don’t…that doesn’t mean that we are not humble:( A head covering, or lack of, does not show what is someones heart.

I apologize if my post made too much light of the subject. I was merely trying to point out one of the advantages of old customs, even if more secularly motivated. People generally don’t discuss jean brands in the church vestibule, for example, but they might discuss dresses and ties. Just saying.
