A lot of non-Catholics ask: Have you accepted Jesus as YOUR personal Lord and Savior? This question has quite irritated me for quite a while NOT because of the fact that Jesus is my saviour but it stresses that we OWN Jesus… I would like to believe that Jesus IS NOT OURS but WE BELONG TO JESUS!!!

This passage is taken from the bible and I hope all of you can meditate on it!!!

John 15:16
**You did not choose me, but I chose you **and appointed you to go and bear fruit–fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.

Sure but we still profess Him as our Savior and express our love and fruits.

Nevertheless, while it is true that He is our personal Savior, He is also the Savior of the world. Our souls go either to heaven or hell, one at a time. It remains a personal decision for Christ. However, it is entirely silly for one Christian to ask another if they have accepted Christ. Some of those who ask have not even been baptized! We must pray for them.

Simple answer: “Yes! I have been born again” (through water and the Spirit - John 3:5). Most “bible Christians” stop reading at John 3:3. Tell them to keep reading.

And, may the peace which surpasses all understanding be yours this Easter, and forever. Amen.

i hate the word “personal” in that statement

i means our relationship to Jesus is purely one on one. no, its not just Jesus and you. its Jesus and the Church. and the Church is each and every one of us, together, collectively. Jesus did not save each and every one of us individually. He saved us all, together.

We’ve been singing “Praise to you, Lord Jesus, King of endless glory, Savior of the world” all Lent. Sure, Jesus is my Lord (and if I am to be saved, it will be His doing) but more importantly, He is Our Lord. Jesus belongs to the whole church, and all of humanity.

“Personal” is a word which automatically occurs within faith communities which are already heavily fragmented and have a poor concept of the earthly Body of Christ. Catholics, in eating His Body and drinking His Blood, have the most “personal” relationship on earth with Jesus Christ. It’s all a matter of faith and belief.

However, we must bless them for their faith, and pray that they will, in their lifetime, know the sublime joy of communing with our Lord.

I also have a problem with the “Personal” part of this question. Yes faith is a personal decision, but this question just emphasises the “I” generation in my opinion.

Jesus emphasised loving the whole world, it’s not JUST about US! What happens to us after death affects everyone. Communion of Saints. If I die a saint, meaning I go to heaven, I affect those who are still living on earth because then, I can pray for those who are still in the Church Militant.

Jesus preached and suffered and died for everyone in the whole world, not just for me in particular. I’m so tired of this selfish “I” generation stuff… a sign of the times I guess.

The very concept of protestantism is the self. Personal interpretation of scripture. Personal relationship with Christ. Personal definitions of morality. My own personal “church” if I disagree with yours. Once you begin to indulge the self rather than deny the self, this is what naturally occurs. Thousands of denominations (more daily!) stand as the proof of this.

No generalization here

I agree Triune, I wouldn’t say that your denomination is about self… it’s awfully close to Catholicism. I wish you’d take just a few more steps closer, we catholics would be honoured to have someone like you on this side of the Tiber 😃

But, always a but, you have to admit that many many many non-catholics are about themselves, their own personal faith and the further they move away from catholics, the more they forget that what they do affects the whole world.

Actually many Protestants go beyond self because the Church is the entire body of believers to them.

LOL I don’t have to convert. Just put enough poorly thought out Baptist arguments in my presence, and I magically transform into Fidei Defensor 😃

I agree, Loboto. This is particularly true with modern evangelicalism. However, at its root, it comes from Enlightenment rationalism and individualism, especially here in America, not Protestantism. Luther and Calvin would be aghast at such notions. Especially given Calvin’s emphasis on the covenant community.

No reason to hate it. Embrace it ! The rebirth by H.S. is very personal … our adoption in Christ is very personal. Christ taught our adoption thru him, joins the believer to the Father in unity. Just as Christ was unified with the Father, so are we unified to the Father thru the Son. Sealed by 3rd Person of the Godhead.

As Christ taught, we have to leave father, mother, siblings, etc … to become his sheep. Once we are united with Christ, then we appreciate/recognize our other Christian family within the Church.

Christ was very personal to Paul, to John & Peter, and all the Mary’s of scripture. We must recall that Christ tells that on the Last Day, many will claim to know him in personal sense, yet He will say “Depart from me, I never KNEW YOU”. This implys our roots into Christ MUST BE PERSONAL.

Agreed. Evangelicalism (as we encounter it today) really ought to be seen as an entity/movement that is totally distinct from Protestantism, because the Reformers would see little of value and truth in its toxic individualism and rejection of almost anything from the faith once delivered.

Absolutely, blazer. To most evanjellyfishes, the communion of the saints is Billy Sunday, Billy Graham and Jerry Falwell, and the faith once delivered was the Second Great Awakening.

Exactly right! So the way the topic’s title question is usually framed down here in the Deep South (sigh) is: “Have you asked Jesus to come live in your heart as your personal Lord 'n Savior? If not, you can make Him your Savior today. Repeat after me…”

Last time I was asked when I “got saved,” I said “before all worlds.” I think it fell flat due to the non-creedal environment around here. But I thought it was simultaneously amusing and true. I guess I’m too Augustinian to like the “Personal Lord and Savior” Revivalist line! 😃 He claimed me as his own, not the other way around.

Good for you, dave! Give those Southern Baptists the business, man! LOL…After reading your post I was thinking of “Fletch Lives.” Remember that hillbilly televangelist on there with that phony ministry? That guy F. Lee Ermey played the evangelist, the guy from Full Metal Jacket. Oh man…

Pastor Farnsworth: “Erwin, admit that you are a sinner.”
Fletch: “Uh. Well, I’ve sinned. I didn’t take any Polaroids or anything. But, yeah, I’ve sinned.”
Farnsworth: “The Lord forgives ya! Do you have any other sins, Mr. Fletcher?”
Fletch: “Thank you. Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you. Amen. What? Other sins? Uh, I parked in a handicap spot on my way up here. Actually, on a handicap person. I told him I’d be back in five minutes, so that’s not such a big deal.”

I’ve always found it fascinating how these folks can throw away thousands of years of church polity, theology, ecumenical councils, liturgy, sacraments, and dress up in these turqoise suits with tons of hairspray grabbing heads and thrusting people with “anointings” and amens and making “being saved” a one-time event…sigh…🤷

**Have you accepted Jesus as YOUR personal Lord and Saviour??? The answer to this question is Yes, every time I think of Jesus. Jesus calls us to him, but we must reach out to say yes. It was Mary's "yes" to God's fiat that brought us our savior Jesus. She cooperated with God's divine will. Likewise we cooperate with God's will when we reach back and say "yes" I accept you Lord Jesus Christ as my savior, personally and communally.**

Q1: Have you accepted Jesus as your personal Lord and Saviour?

Q2: Do you believe that if you were to die right now, you will go straight to heaven?

If you answered “Yes” to both questions, Hallelujah! you are saved! (according to some Christians)

🙂
