Have you ever been a victim of a demonic attack?

Duh?

Now this is a mystery. Frankly, I don’t know how it got it. I was surprised myself to see it in the passage I pasted, but I’ve no idea how it got in. It’s the title of a book about the Desert Fathers, so I don’t think a demon put it in. I thought it must be the name given to one of the pages at Catholic Exchange. Sorry.

Well if you didn’t put it there someone else must have done it (do you have littlebrothers or children?).

But “Desert Fathers” can be a reminder of what temtations are about. It’s like being in det Desert (wildernes) like Jesus was when he was tempted. He didn’t get fooled and said no to everything Satan wanted to give him if he would worship him.

Jesus knew that he as Son of the Father owned much , much more than the Satan pretendet to be able to give him.

That’s what we have to remember when we are tempted (small or bigger temptations). In Jesus Christ we already have everything we need. If Satan and his demons try to fool us with something that looks glorious in the moment (i.e. to stop suffering), the oly thing we can lose is our relationship with Christ (if we give up the fight against the fallen angel)!

A thought that I don’t think has been brought out on the subject. Alot of the time I believe we might intentionally or not “open the door” for Satin and sometimes just “crack a window” through human failings. Once he sees an opportunity he will unleash his hideousness with a vengence!!! Therefore, demonic attacks are probably at times caused by a combination of factors. I believe with all my heart however that they are as real as you and I are. I believe that I have experienced them often. Satan will take full advantage of even the slightest of weaknesses. It seems to me that the closer I become to the Lord the harder it becomes. This cannot be a coincidence as it has never failed to happen to me.
Now as much as ever we need the help of St. Michael and all of our saints and angels---- and don’t forget the Blessed Mother–she is more powerful than any!!

I experienced one recenty just after coming out of Sunday Mass. An extremely vivid image appeared in my mind for about a second, a living face far more real than anything my imagination could conjure up. It was the face of a woman in her mid-fifties looking directly at me with a very angry look. I didn’t give much thought to it, but a little later I flew ino a violent rage over some trifling incident and was in a rotten mood the rest of the day. Now, the thing is that, earlier in the week I’d been praying for and trying to advise a person with a demonic relative who was wrecking her life. . . .

Wow, hope the ultra feminists won’t be angry you said the “angry face of a woman” instead of the angry face of a man. Anyway, yes, this has happened to me too in the past. One must even be careful who one prays for, or to directly challenge a possesed person. Not say this is the case here: I am talking in general.

I woke up and there was a horrible pressure on my chest, unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. It wasn’t a pain, but an actual pushing down on me. I tried to call out my roommate’s name who I could see over in her bed but I was powerless. In my mind, I screamed out “In the name of Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God, be gone, Satan” because I knew that was what it was. I was released immediately and shaken to the core. I was fully aware during this event and know that it wasn’t a dream. Sad to say, it took me many months (until I saw John Paul II in Philadelphia on tv) before I went to confession and received absolution for denying my faith.

That exact thing happened to a friend of mine. Three times in one night. And he responded the exact same way.

I’ve had one tangible experience, after which I drove directly to the Church and prayed before the Blessed Sacrament.

Other than that I’ve often felt under spiritual warfare. It particularly manifests itself when we are preparing for a Rachel’s Vineyard retreat. Our team members, who are all close friends, begin to misinterpret each other and fall apart at the seams. After a couple times we began to recognize it for what it is and praying accordingly, either the Jesus prayer or St. Michael the Archangel.

The prayer to St. Michael I use whenever I begin to resort to my old habits of self pity, and resentment of people whom I have interpreted to have hurt me somehow. It really does lighten that burden.

Yes, very careful I guess. Here’s an interesting passage I just ran into that should prove helpful in withstanding at least some of the unwelcome assaults that can come our way. It’s from Elder Anthony of Optina (1795-1865) and reads:

"No matter what kind of bitterness befalls you, no matter what unpleasantness happens to you, say, ‘I will endure this for Jesus Christ!’ Just say this and it will be easier for you. For the name of Jesus Christ is powerful – in His presence all unpleasant events are quelled, demons vanish, your annoyance will abate and your faintheartedness will be set at ease when you repeat his sweetest name."

I think this prayer may have cropped up earlier in the thread. But it still sounds like good advice to me. I’ll be taking it.

Yes, now I do where they would accuse me of past sins that I went to confession for. Also, being that in my past I lead a very sinful life, they don’t like to loose souls, so I can feel them OPPRESSING me with negativity on some days, or unexplained sadness at times, etc. One example is that today during the whole day, I was feeling down and out, all a weird day, and tonight when I knelt and prayed the Rosary, while meditating on the mysteries, I LITERALLY FELT A WEIGHT LIFTED OFF MY SHOULDERS, I FELT SO LIGHT. AS IF THE WHOLE DAY THIS WEIGHT WAS ON ME, AND SUDDENDLY LET GO. DEAR GOD, DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT WAS THIS??? IF SO, PLEASE TELL ME WHAT YOU HONESTLY THINK?

Yes, the Church refers to this phenomenom as Marias liftum daweighticum

But seriously, I have prayed the rosary for years and jsut recently discovered the beauty of the Virgin Mary. I am a believer now. Not doing ti outta faith but outta of knowledge. She is just like our mothers and we don’t need to be justified in front of her. Wow, how nice to have a friend in heaven.

Just like your mother will comfort you in prison so will Mary.

I had this experience once. I was awakened and I could not move I was powerless over this black force that come upon me. After thinking about it for a while, I figured it was a phenomenom where my eyes were open and my mind was somewhat alert but my body was still sleeping. If I was in fact possessed by a demon in that moment, it would explain a lot.

I had a period of terrifying experiences several years ago now. I cannot begin to explain because it is too involved, but I was, at that time, what could best be described as an agnostic who was living in deep, habitual, grave sin (of course at the time I did’nt realize it, at least on a conscious level anyway).

Long story very short, I had unwittingly invited these attacks upon myself. I didn’t know much about God, so given the circumstances and nature of the attacks, it is a miracle that I have ended up where I am, having knowledge of the fullness of truth, which is what I was looking for anyway, albeit in the wrong places.

I have literally been recovering from that period in my life for the past 8 years. I never thought I would make it to where I am today.(i.e. not being spoon fed in an institution somewhere). Talk about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder-I do not exaggerate. Aside from that, as I was able to work again and begin to function in society it was hard to adjust. I haven’t really met anyone who has had a similar experience, so it can be quite isolating, not that I particularly want to focus on it.

Anyway. I have experienced much healing through prayer and the Sacraments and have felt much protection around me. Thanks be to God.

Yes, there is a specific prayer for exorcism that only a Bishop-approved priest may say in the name of the Chuch to deliver a soul that is ‘possessed’ by the devil. There are different degrees of possession which I believe need not be discussed here.

Sometimes you can tell if someone is possesed but it isn’t always that easy. The person must be tested physically and psychologically to make sure it is demonic in source. This is mandatory by the priest to do. The Church in her wisdom needs to take this stand because much more damage can be done by trying to exorcise a person when he/she is not possessed at all.
There can be a combination of both psychological and demonic and in most cases this is true.

How can you tell? Well it is a whole mixed bag of stuff to look at. If you think you do know someone who is suffering such a thing, I would pray and tell the a priest. This stuff is rare enough but it has been escalating the past few years. Even the Pope demanded the priests learn demonology as cases are cropping up with time. Do NOT attempt to do anything yourself…you would not be qualified and it is could cause greater damage…both for you and the victim.

Well ,well see there are some the Bad guy not convince he doesn’t exist , I beleive many who do know he exists get attacks on regular basis , most are sly,where he whispers sins of past in ear ,giving you doubt of forgiveness ,even though you have long ago confessed and through your repentent heart and the power to forgive sins by the priest they are history, but that cunning trick he wants you to dispare,doubt. When it happens you say to him, " look you sad creature God forgave me, He has perfect forgiveness ,that sin no long is visible anywhere , just cause your Pride didn’t allow you to ask God’s forgiveness , we humans do repent and God has washed us clean" tell him try again when he can come up with something more original, then say the St. Michael prayer, and bind him by the Name of Jesus to stay and pray ,then say the Our Father , he then goes away for long time . Remember God is awesome, Jesus said with Faith of a mustard seed could move a Mountain, and Faith in Jesus that your His and He will not let a little wimp of a bad guy harm a hair on your head,and if anything befall you ,remember God only allows those things which eventually strengthen us , or be leading us to Greater Faith. When God allows things to happen , it is always for a Greater Purpose, always Trust Him, Love Him ,He is Our Father. The Devils days are numbered , he knows it , he is just getting psychotic, and desperate, Ignore him, Look to Jesus, and YOU can overcome all that he can throw at you .Look at the Loving Heart of Jesus , and beleive He Loves You and is with YOU. I’ve been reading Benedicta Ward’s Lives of the Desert Fathers. Some of these Fathers, apparently, suffered violent physical assaults by demons that did real damage. Maybe there’s a sort of spectrum of demonic violence, and, at least in some cases, the holier or more spiritual a person gets the more violent the demons get as fearing to lose their victim to God.

This is a great quote. I firmly believe that repeating the name of Jesus is a powerful protection against evil…(I suspect that that is why one of the devil’s tricks is trying to get people to use it as a swear word–trying to pervert it).
That is why the Jesus Prayer is so powerful.
 
i dont really know if i was a victim of a demonic attack or just a coincidentel nerves or anxiety, i dunno. but a little less than 1 month ago i was praying the rosary, and meditating on the luminous mysteries, and when i was in the middle of the 4th mystery, the tranfiguration, i started to feel violently ill, the room started spinning, i started sweating (it wasnt hot out) and i couldnt kneel straight, and was falling against my chair. i forced myself up to the bathroom, and a few min after i put my rosary down i began to feel better, so i returned and finished the prayer, not thinking much of it (i had a lot of skol stress - i figured maybe anxiety) - only the next week it happened again - at the exact same point. this time however, i just leaned myself against my chair and kept praying - the feeling was gone by the end of the last mystery and it hasnt happened since - i really dont no wht this was - if it was from the devil or not - but with Jesus one can endure all!

Oh my God, so interesting!! Tell more on this? I too get the "negative/depressing thoughts, and even about sins already confessed I am reminded of them. My friend told me that the way demons oppress us is: they "stand or sit on our sholuders(that’s how they whisper suggestions), maybe that’s why yesterday, as I was praing the Rosary, I felt an aleve, as if all the negativity and just feelings of being weighed down left.

once confessed, sins are behind a veil the devil cannot see. he is nothing but a liar. the master deceiver.
people avoid the devil thinking by not messing with the devil they can somehow strike a deal with him to leave them alone.
the devil is powerless against the power of Jesus. but the demon would love for you to forget that.

but at the same time, the person who is holy has special graces from Christ, and that while the attacks from satan may increase, the ability to resist the attack likewise increases.

You only get to play in the NBA finals if you’re a pro player yourself. so when the demonic attacks become harder and more burdensome, it’s a gift from God that shows he knows you can successfully handle it - otherwise, he wouldn’t ask you to bear the cross.
