Have you ever had to defend your faith?

I defend my faith daily on the Internet. My interest began when a niece of mine asked a question about the JWs and I set her straight about them. Eventually I found a Catholic list and had only been on the list a short time when I received a private email telling me that my parish priest does not read the Bible etc. Anyone who was on that list knows what happened 🙂 .

Last year I was asked by a woman on a train journey if I had been saved. I had let slip that I was Catholic by responding something about praying and the Mass. Her questions were considered but I was able to respond in a manner that she was not expecting and I am sure she was frustrated because she did not get anywhere. My final response, and she could not give a reply related to the grace that we receive at Baptism :D. The conversation ended because she had to leave the train, but I would say that I did win the debate and convincingly. I do not think that she was prepared for a Catholic being able to put her on the spot about her own misconceptions about the Catholic Faith.

I am constantly defending my faith against a man who seems to have lost his faith. When he tries to bait me I just toss it off. I am still hoping that one day he will be able to see and that he will return to his own faith (Presbyterian).

Hi Jason!
There are TRUCKLOADS of killer great materials out there that help with these allegations and questions, though some like the murder of Baptists and such are so historically inaccurate that you often have to just tell 'em to prove it with a historical document to shut 'em up 'cos they can’t. It just plain didn’t happen. Of course lots of folks have selective memory loss about “the Know Nothings” here is this country.
The easy part is writing a rebuttal to the tract known as “The Trail of Blood”. A lot of these Baptists use this tract as their source of information. The Trail of Blood is so inaccurate that it should be a real embarrassment to any decent and sincere Baptist.

Hi

As you can see I am new here, very glad to have found the forum and glad to see this thread. Yes I defend my religion, I think many of us do, I think comes from the old days…Yeah I’m Catholic, want to fight? LOL!

Anyway, a person has asked how could I defend my religion without defending the Church. Of course, what follows is a list of cover-ups (i.e. the recent, the orphanages, etc.) The thread had begun with Hitler/Pope but that was refuted. She says the actions of the Church warrant the past (particularly) and present mistreatment of Catholics. I know very little of the orphanage abuse and should know more of the history, I just don’t. Any help? Thanks!

This forum confuses me. Ignatius posted last but I am shown as posting last. I am very new here…probably me?

Hi folks,
I would just want to remind you that sincererity is very important and if you are not sure of something or are confused or are just not convinced as yet just admit to the other person rather than bluffing them and giving them the impression that you know when you dont, cause insincererity can cause more damage and put you in a tight spot causing the other person to get frustrated.
Also be to the point and presice rather than beating round the bush as that is very irritating to others and gets one nowhere.
Wishing you all the best in your endeavors to defend the Catholic Faith which is “True” because of the action of the Holy Spirit alone.

Yes, constantly. It seems that if there is any ‘gathering’ of people, and the topic of religion ever surfaces…Catholicism is the subject, and is usually always (in my experience) negative.

I, on the other hand, have NEVER heard anything negative about any other religion (its beliefs), other than, perhaps, a very few comments about someone’s minister (and mild at that). I’ve NEVER heard anything said, negative, about the beliefs of a Protestant denomination. Never. For once, I wouldn’t mind hearing something about Presbyterians, Methodists, Episcopalians, Evangelicals, etc. etc. etc.

The only exceptions to the rule would be those ‘religions’ that are considered by most (the Catholic Church included) to be non-Christian, are those like “The Jehova’s Witnesses and Mormoms”…but, even then I hear complaints about getting ‘knocks on the door’, or some general "they have weird beliefs’…but nothing as cruel as what they say about the Catholic Church.

It seems that most everyone THINKS they know what the Catholic Church teaches and believes. And they feel free to knock her whenever they get the chance.

Of course, some of the ‘cafeteria catholics’, the poorly catechized and secular-minded Catholics, are sometimes its own worst enemy. I’ve had to explain what Catholicism teaches to people who ought to know.

The media attacks Catholicism constantly, as does the literary world, and it’s just accepted. I don’t even think many Catholics KNOW when they’re faith is ‘being attacked’.

I recall going to a party once, and having to leave around midnight. When asked why, by the hostess, we replied that we ‘had to get up in the morning for church’. Then a complete stranger asked me, “What church do you go to?”. Well, I innocently replied. Immediately she said, “Why don’t you go to EvangelHeights up in Natrona Heights?” I just looked at her dumbfounded and replied, “Because I’m Catholic”. Her response was, “You Catholics are all brainwashed.”.

I’m so glad that I’ve gotten into apologetics, because I no longer sit around and ‘take it’, nor do I give lame responses. People may not like me anymore (ha! ha!), but I explain and defend when I think it’s appropriate. And I’m excited about all the new converts that are ‘refreshing’ the faith, who know their Bibles well, and who are filled with enthusiasm. It’s time to shake up the many ‘in-name-only Catholics’ and get them motivated to learn their own faith, and help reach out to our separated brethren, to unite them within the one true faith, the one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic!

hi, everybody whose eyes read this…

i have had a thousand chances each week to defend my faith, not just defend it, but actually go OUT and defend it, but i never did it.
i could always blame the priests in my church for not doing it themselves alot of the time, but really, that has never prepared ANYone’s place in heaven, has it ever?? the more work we do here [starting with defending poisonous arrows], the more “groundwork” is being laid for each one of us in the Kingdom high up there.

i am indian. i have the facilities to prepare for myself a “palace” in heaven, but it’s all about doing what it takes.Having the balls, so to speak. That is the question. And in the Bible, when Jesus talks about sitting down to think and to estimate before building a tower, what he means is just that. Weigh the options. Weigh the benefits [in this case, a piece of his kingdom - the best real estate ever !!!] what he implies is simply outstanding for those of us who can see it.

I .

The worst was an archdiocese Ministry Formation course I took where I was taught outright HERESY and was kicked out of the class when I published an article in Catholics in Action exposing what they were teaching. Now I am organizing a program in my church to teach adults about our faith using Fr. Corapi’s 24 tape series on the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

I love my Church and I would defend it to the death.:yup:

My husband is not Catholic but he really enjoys listening to Fr. Corapi and has been actively looking for him on ETWN. Where can I get the tapes? My husband has admitted to me that he has some discomfort with the catholic church due to his Baptist upbringing. I think that Fr Corpai’s tapes would be a big help.

I posted this under the a thread that Thanked this particular board but it is appropriate here. I will admit that my younger brother is my favorite sibling. There have been times in his life when he seemed like a lost soul but he has gone a long way in straightening up his life. He attends a word of God(Assembly of God? Church of GOd?) church that practices speaking in tongues and is very fundamentalist. My brother explained to me that he was uncomfortable with Catholics worshipping statues. Oh wow! Due to reading this board I was ready. I put on my mental boxing gloves and prepared to do battle.

I asked him if his wife was sick would he hesitate to ask me for prayer. He gave me a look that clearly said,"Duh’ but he responded with, “Yes, of course.” I explained that is all praying to the saints is. I told him that those in heaven still care what happens to us on earth. He seemed satisfied. WOw!😃 I keep thinking this is way to easy. I was prepared for him to whip bible verses out of context but he didn’t do that. Just accepted my answer.

Yes, I have as I went to a liberal arts college and I was in a liberal arts major. English Lit. I took a class called Psychology of Religion. And that did not go well. I took the class, I didn’t think anything of it, I thought it would be fair. Needless to say, it wasn’t. I had so much trouble in the first few classes and then the professor finally told me after class one day that I could not pass her class because I had faith in Jesus. I had a discussion with her for two hours after class, and that was the sum of it. It was really difficult, to be discriminated against like that, and also becaus I had to rearange my entire schedule because of that class and it was really hard and a lot of trouble and it was my last semester too. I could go into a lot of detail, but it was ridiculous…and that makes for a long story heh. But it was really tough, just knowing that I couldn’t take a class at my University because I was Catholic.

Oren,
I know what you mean. Believe it or not, Catholics have been excluded from different groups and hassled even here in this country. Do a websearch on “The Know nothings” 😉 A charming bunch from our country’s history.

If you hang around this site you’ll see how that takes on new meaning and hopefully learn a lot about the faith and be better equiped to deal with some of the stuff we get slapped with. A good place to begin is on the ma(name removed by moderator)age library and all those tracts and papers listed there. Then just hang out in here, pick topics of interest and offer your bits and soak up the good stuff. This is a good place to follow Bruce Lee’s advice and “take what’s useful” 👍
Pax vobiscum,

Yes I know that Catholics have been discriminated against. It’s just the personal experience, of not being able to be able to take a class because I was Catholic. It’s just…intense. My favorite professor and my advisor, and my friend was very anti Catholic in fact. I really looked up to him a lot. But he was just anti Catholic. That’s the facts. It’s hard.

Frequently, against fellow Catholics.
But most often against those who make ignorant allegations against the church and our beliefs. I don’t think some of them really want to discuss truth…just to bash the Church and proselytize.
