Have you met or seen a famous person up close? If so, who was it?

I remember Raymond from ‘The World Over’ show that I listen to sometimes. He sometimes makes appearances on Fox TV sometimes, I think.

Nice memories, I would imagine. I especially liked Fudge Ripple, although I rarely see it in stores these days, unless anyone else knows a grocery store that carries it.

Well, I was referring to Lawrence Welk night. 😆 but I’m on board with the ice cream. Check Turkey Hill brand. 😉

Leonard Nimoy in 1968 in Philly; he shook my hand! Patrick Stewart and Helen Mirren back in the 1970s when they were at the RSC and actually ate pizza with starstruck Yanks taking theatre classes; Alan Rickman and Ian McKellan (ditto though this time beer at a pub. By this time I was used to drinking ‘warm’ beer). Judi Dench, Francesca Annis, and Sir John Gielgud who talked to our group after a play. Pope John Paul II was only about 3 feet away when he came to Boston in 1979 and rode through the streets.

Then within the last couple of years Johnny Gilbert (a terrific guy!) and Alex Trebek, an even MORE terrific guy! Cannot say enough good about him. Missed Jeopardy James though!

What I can recall off the top of my head:
  • In my place of work: OJ Simpson (before he ran afoul of the law), Michael Caine, Roger Moore, Peter Ueberroth
  • On the street: Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman, Harriet Nelson, Prince Albert II of Monaco, Princess Stephanie of Monaco
  • In an airport: Alan Alda, King Olav V and Crown Prince Harald (now King Harald V) of Norway, entire Coventry RFC English professional rugby union team
  • On a flight: entire Tromsø IL Norwegian professional soccer team
  • In a bar: entire St. Mirren FC Scottish professional soccer team
  • In a store: Sherman Helmsley Hemsley
  • At an amusement park: ValĂŠry Giscard d’Estaing (former President of France)
  • On a university campus: Hillary Rodham Clinton

Note: my standard of fame may differ from that of others.

I’ve excluded incidences of meeting people in their work environments, since those aren’t exactly chance encounters. One would, for example, expect to see well-known film directors on studio backlots in Hollywood or NFL players in a football stadium

Quite a variety of famous folks there. Sounds like you spent some quality time in the U.K.

BTW… I think Judi Dench is a wonderful actress, and Leonard Nimoy as Spock was a classic. I hope he was nice in real life. I still occasionally watch original Star Trek reruns from time to time.

They’re easy to find in NYC
Where I lived there 24 then 10 years never meet anyone. 🙂🙃

Oh I sat behind Matt Damon on a flight from LA to NY and I’m still amazed I did not go insane. Was tempted to take a picture of him while he was sleeping… but alas I’m a good girl so I behaved… does that count as a good deed, not jumping Matt Damon?

Sounds like you really get around, UpUpAndAway. That’s an impressive list of people from many walks of life.

I probably would have taken a photo of him, but I would’ve felt obligated to ask permission first. Yes, I think you were a good girl… 😀. One guy’s opinion.

Yes he was. Even at a time when we know, from his later books, that he found the “Spock” association grating, he was gracious to his fans.

talk about contrasts…I shook hands with Newt Gingrich and was blessed by Pope Benedict.

I grew up in Southern California, so that at least partly explains the length of my list. Half of the sightings/meetings I mentioned occurred outside SoCal, though.

Blessed by Pope Benedict? Wow. Can you possibly provide some context? In Rome during a papal audience or other event?

Yes, keeping things in perspective, that is the most important thing of all in life 👍🙏

BTW. I forgot to mention I played basketball in high school and our team played twice against Magic Johnson’s high school team, although his name was just Earvin back then and he was only 6’4”.

Needless to say, my team came out on the losing end of those encounters, but I could tell he was on his way to becoming a special talent and would most likely become famous.

Amazing, Tis_Bearself. I may ask for your autograph after reading that list. 😀

Did you speak with any of these or just see them nearby, if I may ask?

Guitar Center on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, 1991. I was there with my then-boyfriend, who played guitar as a hobby, to buy an amp. 🎸 He (my boyfriend) wasn’t originally from the area and therefore wasn’t used to being in close proximity to famous people. I had to stop him from yelling across the room, “Hey Mr. Jefferson! How’s Weezie?” :woman_facepalming:t2: 😬
