Citing Texas’s ability to house the entire world population is a red herring. The main problem with overpopulation is not finding enough land to house everyone but rather acquiring enough resources. We are harvesting fossil fuels, timber, fish, etc. unsustainably in an effort to support the rapidly growing population. The solution clearly isn’t to stop reproducing or deny medical services but rather to develop new technologies that both meet our needs and sustain our sources of energy, food, etc.

If entire regions of the globe are in a constant state of starvation, then over population is evident.

Also, he provides no evidence for his claim that world population will peak and then decrease in the stated timeframe.

First of all, the website seems to be unable to be accessed (at least to me).

Second of all, large regions of the world starving is NOT proof of overpopulation. It is proof of human greed and stupidity. It is a fact that we have more than enough food for every single human being on this planet to not starve. Humanity just wastes massive amounts of food every year, either through overeating or through throwing it away unnecessarily.

Third of all, maybe we would have even more food if the US Congress didn’t find it necessary to subsidize a certain type of fuel that actually costs more energy than it creates…

“The earth is finite. Its ability to absorb wastes and destructive effluent is finite. Its ability to provide food and energy is finite. Its ability to provide for growing numbers of people is finite. And we are fast approaching many of the earth’s limits.” Union of Concerned Scientists

Assuming you are correct, do you think the answer is population control? If so what kind? Are you personally willing to submit yourself to these restrictions?
Also, I don’t think the problem is overpopulation. I think the problem is a lack of respect for the limitless talent and ingenuity of humanity. The point of the video is that scientists have been saying what those who signed that document have indicated for a long time and the world will soon end and yet we are still here. The statement about the population decreasing after 30 years is based on the current rate of decline of the birth rate globally.
I believe that the focus of technology on this subject should not focus on limiting the human population but on creating technologies that nullify the negative effects of human population.

I COULD NOT AGREE MORE!!

Guys, I live in California’s Central San Joaquin Valley. Many call this area the the food basket of the world. Almost everything is grown here, you name it, corn, cotton, grapes, tomotatoes, almonds, oranges, etc, etc… The political Dems in the area have totally raped the region of water to save a fish (the Delta Smelt). Can you believe it, a Fish!! If anybody drives interstate 5 from Bakersfield to Sacramento on the valleys west side, you will see fields after fields just drying up with no farm activity. Thousands have lost their jobs. You can see acres and acres of grape fields just drying up, or you will see large empty lots, with the local farmer usually posting a sign reading, "last year we grew Corn, Sugar, and Cantalopes here, but thanks to the government man-made drought, this year NOT!

Very Sad!!

The overpopulation garbage is a tool for pro abortionists and euthanasia supporters. The video is correct. While, yes, we live on a planet with finite resources, we also live on a planet with renewable resources. And populations rise and fall periodically. And if the Parousia isn’t immediate, then we may begin colonizing space…

The “answer” is not just population control, but a societal change in attitudes. Politicians, economists and developers repeat their mantra that we need continuous population growth in order to grow the economy. So what is the optimum population? Exponential growth is to continue indefinitely? Why? Says who?

Native European population growth has fallen below the 2:1 replacement ratio necessary to sustain a culture. So politicians keep insisting that they need higher immigration numbers in order to sustain economic growth.

Personally, I don’t need to have a dozen offspring in the hope that six will survive and will look after me in old age. That’s why we have social safety nets, in the west.

Yeah, Malthus could not have predicted the Green Revolution in agriculture, which led to even higher populations in Africa, and even more problems.
The point of the video is that scientists have been saying what those who signed that document have indicated for a long time and the world will soon end and yet we are still here.
Just because Paul Ehrlich and groups like the Club of Rome were off in their predictions, does not mean their are no limits to growth.
The statement about the population decreasing after 30 years is based on the current rate of decline of the birth rate globally.
No, they are counting on increased “family planning” in poorer countries.

“To achieve such reductions it is essential that access to family planning expands in the poorest countries of the world. The urgency of realizing the reductions of fertility projected is brought into focus by considering that, if fertility were to remain constant at the levels estimated for 2000-2005, the population of the less developed regions would increase to 10.6 billion instead of the 7.9 billion projected by assuming that fertility declines.”

The wacky greenies are doing the same thing to the Klamath basin on the Oregon-California border. Not only is this very sad, it is so very bad as to be almost suicidal. I think the wole purpose it to actually create a food crisis.

I do have a question, what is a tomotato? It that some kind of hybrid cross between a tomato and a potato? Do they grow on a vine or underground? I bet they have a rather unique texture. Do you put them in salads or bake them? 😛

There is a wonderful movie out there called “Demographic Winter” that is about the myth of overpopulation and the fact that if anything we will actually be suffering an underpopulation problem in the near future. It is a frightening video to watch but I think it’s important for us as Catholics to understand these issues so we will better know how to fight for what is right.

Simply put, anyone that believes we are facing/will soon face an overpopulation problem are just not looking at the facts and statistics, and instead are basing everything on what the media says. People need to get with the program.

"The Wacky greenies"…nice choice of words.(not! )
I would love to see a tomotatoe.AS long as its not GMO,…oh wait…it would have to be:p
oh well.

OK, I didn’t scrutinise everything above, so aplogies if this repeats.

I have heard that much of the world’s misery is actually due to underpopulation of certain areas, esp. Africa. Ya, I know it sounds screwy. But the argument is, that when an area is underpopulated, no-one can do anything except scratch their own food out of the ground. Only when you have an adequate population can you have prosperity: someone who can manage food warehousing, rather than simply supporting himself. Someone who can engage exclusively in food distribution, or weaving, or producing any goods in excess, so that they can trade.

I doubt this would apply to India, for example, which is very densely populated but extremely vulnerable to weather, food-wise. But it does make sense with Africa, I think, at least sub-Saharan. Really, most of the continent is tropical and home to some of the richest and most fertile land in the world. And people starve there? Insane political leaders aside cough Zimbabwe cough], why isn’t Africa the granary of the world?

Why do so many of you people think overpopulation is a myth? I have heard Catholics say this before. It’s seems perfectly logical to me that the Earth is indeed overpopulated by humans and that the problem is getting worse every day. Based on the facts that the Earth is finite and that the human population grows considerably every year. Currently the population of the Earth is approaching 7 billion people, by 2050 it’s estimated there will be 10 billion people. in 1950 there weren’t even 3 billion people on the planet. Where does this overpopulation “myth” thinking come from? Logically the earth being finite must only have the capacity for a finite number of humans to live on it. Is it not clear that the Earth is finite? Is it not clear that the human population is growing rapidly? How is this a myth? For this to be myth you must deny that the Earth is finite.
