*Oh, what toy did they want? I avoid Black Friday like the plague… *
It is the Bakugan where the 7 individual Bakugan come together to for something that looks like a robot. I can’t remember what it is called. Your kids are probably too old to be obsessed with Bakugan the way that mine are.

well not me but a team of 10 volunteers. there are 20 turkeys in roasters and another 25 being cooked in a mobile bbq outside in the schoolyard. I don’t know of those are being smoked, fried or simply roasted. but the smell is driving us crazy. the rest will be cooked this evening while the first batch is being sliced and cooled for refrigeration. they will be there all night, doing the potatoes and stuffing, because they begin serving at 11, the folks will be in line by 10.

Change of plans. It looks like I am cooking a day early after all. I just got a text from my ex canceling the Grand Canyon trip with the kids. So, looks like we will have Thanksgiving dinner together on Thanksgiving instead of today, and I won’t be having it at my BF’s mom’s house tomorrow.

Unfortunately the kids are thinking of all the ways that I can make it up to them, which all involve $$$ I don’t have. 😦 Rats.

On the bright side, this means we can go to Mass at our parish tomorrow. 🙂

I’m not familiar with this toy, no. I have never heard of that, actually…is it like legos?

Made my pies yesterday, and cinnamon rolls too, for breakfast tomorrow. I’m about to start on the cranberry sauce, which I should have done yesterday. Oh well…still need to clean my house too!
OH MY GOSH - thank you SO MUCH for reminding me!! DH has to make his cranberries tonight - I totally forgot that!
Wow, shanny, are you cooking for a crowd or just your immediate family? Sounds totally delicious. How are you dong your brussels sprouts? I’ve only just discovered how great those can be.
I love love love Brussels sprouts!!! I cut them up and saute them in olive oil until they are nearly caramelized with a very thinly sliced onion and a bit if bacon (blanch the sprouts first). Mmmmmmmmmmmm!!! But I save them for Christmas because they are extra special. 😉

Oh bummer…a trip to the grand canyon sounds like it would have been fun. I am so happy that you get to go to mass now…though. So what will happen with your bf’s mom’s house…will you get to go over at all to visit?

Liza, that sounds unbelievably great. I have limited experience with Brussels sprouts, because I previously thought I didn’t like them. I usually blanche them, then cut them in half and roast on a cookie sheet with olive oil and herbes d’ provence.

That is a wonderful way as well - I love them roasted. Heck, I like them boiled with a little bit of butter, I’m not picky!!! 😉 I started to saute them a few years ago and this is now my favorite. Just make sure they are VERY small or broken up into leaves if they are big, otherwise you stand there for ages to get them done enough.

No, I won’t. It’s about 2 1/2 hours away. So, too far to pop over for just a bit.

I had come downstairs and my daughter, who is 18, was actually wearing a pair of jeans, trying them on for the trip. It’s been about 3 years since I have seen her in jeans. The last time she bought them specially for a trip to Mexico to build houses with her confirmation group. She wears skirts and dresses every day. She’s already changed back into a dress.

We’re thinking about going hiking on Friday instead.

Family, parents brothers and sisters, grandparents… But less than usual, about 22 people if they all don’t bring uninvited guests:p

my Brussels I just defrost (i really prefer the petite frozen kind to fresh which get starchy tasting fast to me) sautee with some bacon until browned. really simple. my kids LOVE them we eat them all the time.

I’m making the dressing today and then tomorrow, the rest of the meal. DH is doing the turkey. If I am really ambitious, I may make rolls from scratch; if not, I have some really nice ones that are frozen and just need to defrost and proof a little.

The posts about the brussel sprouts sound yummy. We both enjoy them, and I’m thinking that I’ll make some using bacon. I have heard so much about how good that is.

We’ll be having our usual small Thanksgiving dinner, as we’re so far from family. At least our younger daughter and her husband are here in town (and will be for at least the next 4-5 years - yippee!!!) Older daugher and her husband are out on the west coast for a couple years, and will be having dinner with an old high school friend who happens to be in the same department at Berkeley - small world!

I did the shopping yesterday and just used my early Christmas gift of a stand mixer (got on ebay for a phenomenal price) to make the dough for Alton Brown’s cinnamon roll recipe. Tonight, I’ll make my usual homemade apple and chocolate cream pies (not big pumpkin fans here.)

I got carried away at the WalMart supercenter yesterday; they had turkeys on sale for .40/lb, and as I love turkey, I came home with a 22 pounder for $8.99!!! It is now in the kitchen sink, thawing in cold water, which may take a while. It did occur to me, after I got it home, that I’m not entirely sure it will fit in my roaster! Oh well…we’ll make it work.

My husband is working tomorrow and Friday, as we wanted to use the days off for another time. He does get to come home, as usual, after his early newscast for dinner and that’s when we’ll have our holiday meal with our daughter and her husband; they will also have had dinner in the early afternoon with her in-laws. At least dh is around in the morning until he goes in to work about 1 pm, his usual schedule. We’ll have a nice leisurely breakfast with those cinnamon rolls, fruit, and my once-or-twice-a-year bacon (love it, but almost never buy it.)

The rest of my family is in New England, and my Dad actually lives right in Plymouth, Massachusetts, the mothership of Thanksgiving! We are never able to be there, though, as November is a huge TV ratings period and no time off is allowed 😦 But, we make our own celebrations.

Happy Thanksgiving!
