HBO Scientology documentary

Who else saw this? Very disturbing on so many levels - there’s no way that many people could make that stuff up. I remember reading the book when it came out and hope the “non-lawyer-vetted” cut, or at least the theatrical version, makes it to DVD because there was reportedly a lot that was cut out of the HBO version. I’m really curious to know: have there ever been any “ex-Scientologists” on EWTN ‘The Journey Home’?
 
I saw the HBO program, and am also reading the book on which it was based. Truly scary and disturbing. Equally disturbing is the fact that the media would rather focus on Christian bakers who won’t service “gay weddings” rather than the physical and mental abuse and fraud documented in the program about this “religion.”

I have not seen it. Nor will I. I am skeptical of anything HBO types do in regards to religion. Mormonism, Catholicism Evangelicals… I would not appreciate a drive by hit piece on these religions. And while there is some concerning stuff in Scientology perhaps theologians could discuss it rather than a sensational hit piece designed to malign a faith.

Or is it just that as long as it is not our faith we are ok with the motives behind these attacks?

My thoughts as well. Better tread lightly on this subject; the Catholic Church may be next on their hit list.

Except that our faith was not “invented” by some random guy. :rolleyes:
Plenty of people have attacked the Roman Catholic Church. Where have you all been? :o
And still do. Anything that is true will survive…

I don’t have HBO. But I am smart enough to know that it’s a bogus “faith” they are speaking about.

:confused: The Internet has been blasting at Scientology every day since before the documentary came out. There is a constant barrage of coverage.

Doubtful. There have been plenty of criticisms of the Church over the past 20, 30, 40, 50, 100, 200, 300…years.

What blockbuster news could they uncover? That pedophile priests were shuffled around from parish to parish? That there was financial corruption at the Vatican? That thousands and thousands of people have left the Church because it isn’t morally relativistic? That schismatic sects break off every so often?

All the Church’s dirty laundry, all scandal, all the moral fortitude has already been aired. There’s nothing left for Bill Maher to gnaw on.

Who’s to say how much damage the MSM could do by pushing false stories? Remember the nuns in Ireland? How many heard this story but never heard that it was entirely false.🤷 It seems that’s all they need to accomplish their goal to lure more out of the Church. The ends justify the means = drive by media.

Of course it is false. But the motives of the network and people are important. They lump all religion together. Except for the sacred cow of Islam. I’d like to see HBO do something on that bogus faith! I guess it is easier when you know Tom cruise won’t behead your children and will continue to run movies on HBO channels.
 
A friend of the family was an acquaintance of Ron Hubbard’s so I have some very strong feelings about that outfit. Our friend was kept from Hubbard’s funeral from the inmates that took over that asylum and kept him cloistered for many years. This is hearsay, of course, but I believe our friend. I drove down to Atlanta many years ago to check it out for myself at one of their “churches.” I do not and will never have respect for any spirituality that has you pay-as-you-go to attain knowledge of their doctrine.

I may watch; I may not. My tolerance level for this group is zero. I do not personally know what all they have done, but where there is smoke there is fire. I try to see all sides to a story, and I’m sure on some level this doc is biased. I’m sure some schadenfreude on my part will inform my decision to eventually watch it, I’m very sorry to say. 😦

Caveat:

I’m an open-minded gal. I’ve hung out with Moslems, snake-handlers, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormons, Hindus, Satanists, bikers, Pagans… you name it. I don’t take other folks’ word about any group. I love everyone. Please don’t think I dislike this group based upon the party line. 👍

Oh how wonderful for you! After 3 years of RCIA it sounds like you may know more about the faith than I do. I’ll be praying for you Saturday night.
 
I don’t have HBO but I have watched this. It’s a kind of spoken word performance by L. Ron’s great-grandson. Chilling.
 
I’ll watch it when I get a chance. I guess they consider me a member :eek:. When I was a teenager walking down Hollywood Blvd., they were giving out free copies of dianetics - all they wanted was your name and address. So I foolishly gave mine (never read the book) and now almost 40 years later they still regularly send literature to my mom’s house addressed to me (which promptly goes in the trash). I heard that this was one way they inflate their membership numbers: anyone on their mailing list they consider a member!

I lucked out. I audited a course and after awhile I stopped getting phone calls and I don’t think I ever got mail.

This Scientology “religion” allegedly encouraged its pregnant members to kill their unborn babies, or if they did choose life, took temporary custody of the child over their own parents. In the U.S. With the benefit of tax-exempt status, gained - allegedly - through unlawful means. I really don’t know what else can be done to bring these outrageous anti-life/pro-death abuses to light. Maybe the documentary should have stressed the organization’s alleged pro-abortion policies a little more, I dunno… I just thought there would be more Catholic outrage over it… 🤷
