Serious question - anyone watched it? What did you think?
 
I haven’t watched it, but I’ve seen some brief clips. Their portrayal of the pope is a little, um, disturbing to say the least.
 
I enjoyed it.

I think it had a fair take on Catholicism and the characters were interesting, usually in shows, people tend to criticise or mock the religion but I found it wasn’t doing that here. Though the Pope wasn’t a firm believer, that was part of the story.

That’s the bit that caught me - he most definitely is a firm believer, and a saint but his character makes you think otherwise.

I found it an amazing piece of television and as you say a fair take on what people perceive to be the church. Huge message in there too about how the Pope isn’t the Catholic Church, God and Christ are.
 
It’s great. I really don’t watch much television, but this show is competing with 24 for my favorite show ever.

I love Pope Pius XIII! 😃
 
I don’t get HBO, but I saw some preview trailers online. It struck me as potentially problematic, but I know that trailers are crafted to be provocative. I’m curious to hear the thoughts of Catholics here at CAF, so I’ll follow the thread.
 
I saw a few episodes. I liked / disliked it at the same time.

I liked that the Pope was willing to lay down the law and make clear his decisions. I was actually surprised how orthodox most of the show was (not 100% but more than I thought considering from HBO) How the Pope comes across is shocking but what he is actually saying is not necessarily theologically wrong.

I didn’t like how melodramatic some of it was, but that’s TV now days for you.

Overall I may consider watching some more, but probably wont just because I don’t watch much TV.
 
The thought the last scene where the young pope was confessing that he didn’t believe in God and the confessor’s reaction to the young pope’s confession was brilliant, it made me wonder, what if, if he hadn’t capitulated.
 
Love this show so much, really is fitting for our post-truth, Trump world.

Methinks this thread belongs in “popular media”.

On the topic, I watched the first two episodes of this programme and then switched off.

I hate the character being depicted and think it presents a very untrue depiction of Catholicism.
 
I’ve only watched the first episode and care less about what it might or might not say about Catholicism, I was moved by the scene where the confessor hears that the very rock upon which he anchors his faith confesses that he does not believe in God, what a thought and then the pope is forced to lie so that the confessor can return to his sensibilities. Are you a monitor on this site?

The advertisements left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I don’t think I’ll watch it unless the wife is interested.

Maybe if the young pope fought demons and time travelled I’d watch it…oh wait, that’s Ash vs. The Evil Dead.
 
I’ve been intrigued by the trailers that I’ve seen online, but I don’t have HBO so I can’t watch. Father Z seems to give it a fairly positive review above which is a good sign.
 
This show is nothing but anti-Catholic, “the Pope is the anti-Christ” propaganda.

I canceled HBO because of it.

The show is terribly innappropriate, outlandish, and incredibly disrespectful. As a Catholic, Im shocked and offended, personally. It is another example of a propaganda against the church and a growing lack of respect for other people’s cultures and beliefs.
I call it tacky at best, a glorification of the gawk. I’ll pass.

And anyhow, Catholics do not anchor our faith in the pope. :rolleyes:

I didn’t watch the show so can not make a comment. But would like to know how on earth anyone would believe a man can get to the level of Pope and not believe in God? You gotta have quite the commitment to the faith to become Pope. :confused:
