On more watching I no longer like this show. Some clips gave me a wrong impression. This seems to be pro-leftist anti-Catholic propaganda.

I agree we have had some bad Popes, but I don’t recall having one that didn’t believe in God. To me that would be like Michelangelo saying he doesn’t believe in paint.

Well. my wife and myself watched about 10 minutes last night and turned it off.
This morning, I went back to it thinking maybe we judged it too soon.
It only got worse.
Its nothing more than a production mocking Catholicism.
The writers have little knowledge about Catholicism.
If a film were made mocking Judaism in the same way, it would never have made it to any network.
However, Catholicism is fair game for the cynics and haters.

First I’d like to say that I will reserve my opinion on the full body of work when the mini series concludes. I began this thread because of the scene I witnessed and the thoughts it provoked within me. Of course I watched the scene without the baggage of someone attacking me or my beliefs.The church doesn’t need for someone to attack it, its done more than enough from within. As to the possibility of this actually transpiring, there is only one God yet peoples beliefs and understand of it have produced many churches, many faiths. I’ve often wondered what those priest believed as they said mass and then planned on how to satisfy their lust. I can’t believe that they really believed in God, they believed in something but it couldn’t have been the true God. I don’t believe God, our father has a problem with this show else it couldn’t exist and I’m not afraid of it.

That logic makes no sense. What if someone were to say "I don’t believe God, our father has a problem with this “pornography” or “abortion” or “insert mortal sin here” else it couldn’t exist and I’m not afraid of it

As to your statement on a sinful priest-
It doesn’t take faith in God to keep from sinning. Even Satan and the shunned demons in the gospel believed in God. And believers still fall into sin. The entire point of Jesus existence was the presence of original sin.
Ending on this- Christ asks us to dwell on all that is good and beautiful, and not on scandalous sin. This show does not lead to better things.
I wonder if you are purposely trying to stir things up and be confrontational for fun, so I’m moving along… God bless you.

Personally I don’t believe God has a problem with anything, its narrow minded and frighten people that do. And I had no intention in going in this direction but none of you seem to want to read my opening statement as you seem only interested in posting your reactions to the show after just one episode.

Well, I did read your “statement” and found nothing that required or inspired a comment. You were left wondering, “What if…”. I was only left wondering, “How much longer until it’s over?”
My personal observation is that it is a dark comedy that people have taken to be serious. It’s the episodic equivalent of a poorly told and not very funny joke.
The only way I can resolve that this was actually something that someone purposely intended to write is to imagine their original script was just another run of the mill, angst-filled teenage drama, set in an affluent high school that has been made and remade so many times that even the uncreative and unoriginal minds that run studios couldn’t stomach another one.
So, the teenaged characters become cardinals, nuns, and a pope. The high school becomes the Vatican.
When Diane Keaton sauntered across the room to fetch the little red velvet bag I nearly fell off the couch, I was laughing so hard.
I don’t need more than one episode to know it’s not for me.

To be sure you couldn’t see what I saw because you are looking with a jaundice eye. Your bigotries and prejudices prohibit any attempt to look at any thing with a degree of objectivity and your fear requires that you take all this personal. But this is an excellent example of what is happening in my church. The past keeps demanding that the new wine be put in an old skin, instead of asking what is it that you see, you say you must see it this way, an incestual concept. I do not know you but I see you as someone similar to the cardinal now under the ever vigil eye of sister Mary. Thank you for provoking these thoughts.

I’ve only seen the first episode but it seems to clearly comment on the struggle between modernism and tradition. It also highlights the power dynamics involved in the Church. I’ll also refrain from judging the series as a whole until the entire first season has aired.
I will say, however, that both my husband and I looked at each other after viewing the first episode and said, “What the hell did I just watch?” It was…weird.

I don’t disagree with this. I just find it pretty far fetched that someone would give up everything for something they don’t believe in. Unless they were crazy. Ooops I hope I didn’t just spoiler season 2.
It’s not like our Priests, Bishops, Cardinals…Pope have a day job that they wake up go to, then come home kick back and shut it off. This is a calling, it’s 24/7, it isn’t an easy life.Like I said, haven’t seen the show, don’t watch a whole lot of TV. However, it almost sounds like a jab at a rebuttal I hear Trent Horn use all the time when defending the Faith. He likes to point to the early Christian Martyrs and how they gave up their lives to follow Christ. Even to the point of death in the coliseums. He points to them showing how they never renounced Jesus even though they were tortured and murdered. Trent says why would anyone give up everything for someone who wasn’t really the Messiah.
Sounds like a strikingly similar parallel to me in this TV show.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Bottom line is that these people work for the church, if they worked for God there wouldn’t be a church, just a bunch of loving people caring for each other. My thought is if there were/are/ever were a person that truly believed in God they would be like a light in darkness.

Esoteric means understood by a minority.

I simple asked if you believed in Jesus words. As does a huge majority of Catholics here do.
And I asked if you feel no one here truly believes in God?
Simple yes or no questions.
So let’s try again. What esoteric aspect of what I wrote do you believe escapes me?
