PS. There is a difference between the act of believing and that which is believed.

Do you believe you know God to the fullest, that there is no more for you to know? I am saying that I have watched my church close its doors and I never believed that would happen and most of you are oblivious of the fact that it is our church and what we were taught does not seem to be working so lets look at things from a different perspective. Do you think a church is a person, a building, an idea, it can be all of these things and probably more that escape me but I’m sure there are more important things for us to think about besides who has the true church. I argued with an atheist once who countered with the validity of Jesus’s existence didn’t satisfy the scientific method, I was left with, Jesus may or may not have existed but the effect of the words I read are mine and I know to be real. Now I don’t want to fight but I will argue if something productive is produced.

Well of course I don’t. But I work daily towards the goal through my hope and faith that through God’s Grace that fullness will be granted to me someday. Knowing God to the fullest is what we would referred to as the beatific vision.

I am sorry to hear this. I agree many changes need to be made in the Church and how (not what) things are being taught. Not all parishes have the energy and enthusiasm that we wish they would, but this is not the Church’s fault it is the fault of the members. I am in a vibrant parish, but it’s only because of 5% of it’s members. As a whole we have become lazy as a society. We want to be entertained, our attention spans are set to near zero, it’s all about how I feel and not what is right or best for everyone. Sure the Church isn’t perfect and has made some mistakes in its catechisis. But I think we are the ones that changed what we want to be taught and what we are willing to accept. I think this is why more and more leave the Church. Not because she is teaching us incorrectly.

I think the Church is the Body of Christ first and foremost, but it is also the body of believers (the flock). And every flock needs a shepherd. Sure some say Jesus is the one true Shepherd. However, the Shepherd is smart enough to realize the sheep need a visual presence. Jesus left us the Church to be our physical shepherd here on earth. He knows us better than we know ourselves, that’s why he calls us sheep. Not because we are dumb, but because without someone to guide us we will choose what we want over what is best for us. That is why so many have taken scripture out of context to back up one of their preconceived misguided notions.

Arguing with atheists is a tough one. Jesus life is a matter of historical record, whether he wants to believe it or not. Next time ask him if the scientific method is the only way something can be proven? If he says yes, ask him to use the scientific method to prove it.

God Bless

God allowed me to believe that I was its only son, it was a shock to find out that I had bothers and sisters and an even bigger shock to find that one of my brothers was in charge. I said okay, I can walk the line but when they tried to tell me that I couldn’t talk to my father directly I knew they didn’t know what they were talking about.

OK???

I’m afraid I don’t know what you are talking about here? Your statement is contradicting itself.

Who is “it” that you are the only son of?

And if you are the only son how do you have brothers?

Seriously?

The HBO series uses the title Pius XIII. It was the title of a real schismatic who took the name of “Lucian” Pulvermacher who declared himself pope in opposition to Vatican II.

The series from HBO is a predictable attack against our faith with left wing stars like Diane Keaton, Jude Law et al.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucian_Pulvermacher

The series is total garbage…

I’ve just finished watching this on DVD about a week ago. I found it quite entertaining as did my non-Catholic mother who watched it with me. Like any TV show these days, it has a fair bit of sexual content and so forth. But in terms of its portrayal of the church, I thought it was mostly fair. Not presenting the church through rose tinted glasses for sure. But it didn’t come across as presenting an anti-Catholic agenda. I thought it was pretty balanced. This is exemplified well for instance in I think it was the penultimate episode where Pope Pius XIII and Cardinal Spencer are debating the Pope’s new policy on abortion. There is actually a theological debate with both sides of the argument expressed.

My dear friend in Christ,

In this world where at least half of the Catholics in the US believe in the necessity of abortion and at least 47% supported Obama for both terms and HRC’s bid last year a debate on abortion is not helpful.

What need is the loving affirmation of the truth of Gospel not some ambiguous Hollywood version of what makes us feel good. 😊

[helena burns movie reviews](helena burns movie reviews)

Sr Helena provides a great review. I’m only on episode 6. I almost gave up on the 2nd episode but after reading her review I thought I’d stick it out. My personal opinion is that it’s not for everyone. I was tripping out when Lenny addresses the cardinals. I found truth in a lot of what he said even thought I though he came off stern. I’m a convert to Catholicism and so many thoughts went through my mind about what he spoke about.

It’s interesting the different perspectives out there. And then you have the opposite review in Catholic Stand:

catholicstand.com/hbos-young-pope-absurdity-disguised-art/

I think we should continue to dialogue after each episode. What do you think?

Yes I do as well, why did you convert to Catholicism?
I was(?) a very proud church going charismatic Christian. I went to RCIA with my husband who had all his sacraments but was not a practicing Catholic. He wanted to learn more about his faith and simply offered if I would like to go with him. His words “I’m not trying to convert you”. God has a sense of humor. I on the other hand had the wrong motivation(maybe like St Paul zealous for the Lord. Acts 22) I wanted to go and prove why Catholics were wrong. Yikes! I ate some serious humble pie that year. I had a hangup with the transubstantiation and half way through RCIA I was ready to walk away. But God in His merciful providence chose to intervene. I believe I experienced a miracle in Jan. 2004 in my bedroom. Christ came to me in the fragrance of fresh baked bread and shattered my doubt with the Bread of Life discourse in John 6. I know it may sound strange but I believe when God speaks to us He takes our personality and temperament into account. I smelled the most wonderful smell and there was no evidence in my home for this to have occurred. Sometimes the longest journey is the 12" between our head and our heart.

I put a “?” beside was because now that I’ve crossed the Tiber I find myself being proud of my rich beautiful Catholic faith. Is that healthy or dangerous? 🤷 Hmmmm I think this side of heaven, we’ll battle pride till our death.

You write most tenderly. I am curious as to why the miracle influenced your conversion? Do you know Jesus as a teacher or is the church your teacher?

1 Cor 2:14 for the first question. I considered myself a Christian already. The Holy Spirit illumined my heart to understand further.

both for the 2nd question
one only search the scriptures to see how Jesus is repeatedly referred to as teacher

in the catechism of the catholic church it’s laid out plain starting in paragraph 2030
this portion is Part Three: Life in Christ Chapter 3 Article 3 The Church, Mother and Teacher 👍

My initial curiosity as to why you went from one christian church to another was motivated by a line in your first comment, “I wanted to go and prove why Catholics were wrong.” So it was the miracle that took that from your mind. But no matter as my interest is not in who has the “right” church but a clearer understanding of that which sustains existence. What do you think Jesus was teaching before the church (and time) made him into what we “know” now?

I came here as I was curious what others thought of this show.

I’ve only seen one single episode mostly all the way through (I missed the very start) and then out of curiosity I’ve turned in on from time to time.

Perhaps because I’m not watching it the way its supposed to be watched (and I’ve now given up, as I’ll explain in a minute) I thought the bits and pieces of it I’ve seen are extraordinarily slow and the portrayal of the Pope very odd. It’s not that he’s portrayed as a conservative, but rather he’s portrayed as being almost inhuman.

To my other point, so far I haven’t failed to turn it on when, after just a few minutes, it arrived at nudity or near nudity. The show seems fascinated with topless or completely nude women, unless I’m just freakishly catching the few minutes where this is the case. Really, a collection of nudes pops up out of the Vatican garden? I’ve concluded that its impossible to watch the show without catching what is obviously pitched towards prurient interests so I’m now watching further.

I do believe you have this view because you aren’t watching it in its entirety. This is certainly one approach to the character and it seems viewers are led to think this at various points. But this view is contrasted with others as the show goes along.

I suppose that the only way to get anything from this show was to watch it with no expectations to get anything. If I’d have written the ending Lennie’s death scene would have been as painless as Spencer’s. All in all, I thought it was another very nice thought/example of man trying to understand its position in existence and the power that comes from believing in what you believe.

Wow, way to blow the ending for everyone. Might want to include SPOILER ALERT next time.

For my part, that last episode was awful. Terribly written, nothing really happened for the majority of it, and when something did happen, it was just…dumb.

Also, the show has been renewed for a second season so I’m highly doubtful that any assumptions made about the finale are correct.
