On Monday, I asked my Dad to help me build a small Blessed Mary garden in my backyard. Today, he came over and helped me lay the retaining wall and pull in the dirt. It was a tough, tough job (I KNOW I’d never be a bricklayer
), but we got it done in about an hour and a half. The easy part was finding the annuals and perennials–the more difficult part after that, I thought, was finding an appropriate statue of the Virgin Mary. Or so I thought.
Dad came back over this afternoon after his lunch, and this was the LAST thing I expected out of his mouth: “Say, you wanted a Mary statue, right? Well, I have one in my trunk”.
I was stunned. Abjectly, happily struck dumb to speechlessness! You see, my parents are not Catholic (I’m the ONLY Catholic, and a convert at that, on either side of my family) and while my Dad has been “okay” (read: not saying much) with my being Catholic, he brought me Mary today as a gift. As a GIFT!
I tell you, I was laughing my head off and crying happy tears at the same time. OMG, I just have no words!!!
And she’s just perfect. She’s the perfect size, and you know something, someone could offer me a diamond-encrusted Virgin, and I’d turn it down. The simple, white resin Mary that my Dad picked out himself is the one that’s in my garden. Not only that, Dad kept referring to Mary as “her” and not as “it”. Plus, when we went to pick out annuals and perennials he’d say “this would look good next to her”, etc.
I just have no words. Jesus is just so, so good.
