Headcovering Outside Mass

Sorry ladies. I work on a college campus where there are lots of Muslim women who walk around all swathed up even in 90+ summer and they look terribly uncomfortable. I am all for modesty but I will not cover my head out of church.
I wear a hoodie when I pray at home, but out and about, my head is bare.
 
Dear Consecrated One, Regarding suggestions for the daughter: I myself have raised five children, three of them daughters. This is what I have noticed. Regardless of what they are saying or what they are doing or how loud they are protesting, they do grow up and when they do, they will remember what YOU did. You are their model every day. Do your best, calmly, quietly without the discord of arguments. Call on Our Lady to intercede. Leave your daughter to it, being advised once or twice and most likely in the end she will follow you. I have been astounded to find that what I thought my daughters weren’t paying attention to they learned quite well. It takes time. It unfolds and God willing, you get to see part of how it all turns out. I believe you are free to impose some rules, as in no jeans at Mass, etc; but carefully pick you battles. Jeanannemarie
 
It has been very cold here in Ohio the past few days! I bought two 24" heavy woven scarves at an Amish store. One is a nice medium grey and the other a nice cocoa brown. I have been wearing them here at home folded into a triangle and tied in back, I can’t believe how much warmer I have kept in this cold house. I even slept in it one night! So, I am working on covering at home and finding more reasons to like it. It’s a “one day at a time” kind of thing right now.
 
for the teen agers mom:
let her choose a “stylish” head covering… let her look at some of the lovely scarves online that have been suggested. so she has some choice, but still must abide by your rules.
teens are trying to establish their own identity, and yes peer pressure is a big deal, so by letting her express herself within your rules you help her set her own limits…

for the “Muslim women on campus comment”:
i have long hair. proper choice of a head covering keeps my hair up off my neck in summer…(a lighter head covering, of course) and keeps my head much warmer in winter.
no one says you have to be swathed in full body covering (unless you want to) and neck covering, and three layers… in summer.
also i find black to be a horrid color to wear on my head in summer, and most of the fully covered Muslim women i know wear black.

for ME… having a vareiety of scarves, hats, veils and so on lets me match my head covering to my clothes, mood, temperature, etc… so that i dont have the frezing in winter, melting in summer problem!
also i love color and fabric, so scarves are a bit of a habit with me…
 
I have to say, I love my wide bandannas and kerchiefs! It started out as just a way to keep sand and grit out of my hair while hubs and I remodeled the bedroom, but I liked how they somehow put me in the mood to clean and care for my home. I continue to wear them about a good ninety-percent of the time outside of church and prayer. 🙂

I really appreciate the great ideas and suggestions for my daughter. We went to Mass this Sat. evening and I had my veil on and she didn’t want to wear her little “Tortilla”,
so, I’m sure Our Blessed Mother, inspired me to have her take her scarf off and we did a cute headcovering! Later, she had to go back to the church for a Teen Meeting and she put on a cute litle cap all on her own!🙂
I really enjoyed the idea that she’s paying more attention than I know! Big responsiblilty!

I wear a head covering in Church. Outside of Church I think I would be too intimidated. God Bless all of you for your courage.

I wear a veil in Mass and at home but I haven’t figured out what to do, at the grocery store! I feel like a bandana or scarf is more casual than I feel about my covering. I think right now, I’m too shy to wear my veil out and about, to the grocery store, etc. So, I shall wait for my Blessed Mother to tell me how to honor Her Son and Herself.

I was reading this thread early this morning, and it really got me to thinking about all of this. I did wear a head covering and the long dresses for awhile… then I got away from it. Now that I have read this thread, I prayed about it and it didn’t take long for an answer… 🙂

I quickly got out all my bandana’s and choose one for this morning. I had to run to town and I felt great wearing it, knowing the reason I was wearing it. 🙂

I too would like to find some more colorful, maybe solid colored ones. I’m not sure I want to get back into the long dresses daily right now, but without a doubt the head covering is something I want very much to do.

I looked at some of the websites some of you posted with the different Head coverings. I sure wish there was a kind of headcovering for a Catholic Women, to be worn daily, besides the lace mantilla. That is for Mass, to me anyway. That says I am a Catholic Woman.

If any of you have any ideas, please by all means post them…and pictures would be great too.

I enjoy reading this tread…please keep it going.

Why not a plain white tunic and a long black skirt. Perhaps a belt around the waist with your rosary hanging from it somehow. I would think a tunic with pockets would be very nice and practical. And perhaps a crucifix around your neck. This tunic is from Nordstrom I don’t particularily like the neck but I like that it has pockets.

I’ve been discerning wearing a headcovering only at Mass vs. all the time. I’m fairly sure that I should wear the covering at mass. I wore it twice but it really made me rethink some things such as dress (in particular pants etc) before I go back to wearing one, but anyway. I found this great article for free online. Heard the lady speek on a different topic at a home school conference. She’s not Catholic but I’m always trying to understand all peoples reasoning with wearing a headcovering, and this explanation is very extensive. 56 pages!! I found it a good read and I hope you find something in it too. God bless you all.

Actually, if you read the article, the Code of Canon Law doesn’t apply. You really should read the article. It seems you’re very much a “feminist” who opposes much of what the veil represent/means/symbolizes. However, if you knew the REAL meaning behind it you wouldn’t be so opposed to it at all.

Read the article.
