Raleigh, N.C. – The Republican caucus in Iowa is headed for a photo finish, with the
three leading contenders all within two points of each other. Ron Paul is at 20%, Mitt
Romney at 19%, and Rick Santorum at 18%. Rounding out the field are Newt Gingrich at
14%, Rick Perry at 10%, Michele Bachmann at 8%, Jon Huntsman at 4%, and Buddy
Roemer at 2%.

Interestingly, Santorum has the highest favorability rating at 60%.

It seems to me like Rick Santorum’s candidacy has, until now, suffered from a self-fulfilling prophesy of the people who would have supported him that he was unelectable. No one supports him, so I’ve got to find someone else to support. Now that each non-Romney favorite in turn has imploded to a greater or lesser degree, some started throwing their hands in the air and just going for Santorum. Then once his numbers started to rise he started seeming like more of a heavyweight candidate for the first time and so even more people, who privately liked him from the beginning, began overtly supporting him (though it’s probably too little too late).

I obviously like Santorum’s Catholicism and his commitment to the pro-life cause. I heard him say some things in the debates though, about waterboarding for example, that frankly disgusted me. I’ll take Santorum over our current president in a heartbeat, but I’m unable to support him as more than a lesser evil, unfortunately.

All candidates are humans; therefore, choosing who to vote for is always a choice of the lesser of two evils. I grow tired of people seeking the perfect person as a candidate, there are none of those and there never will be. We always must choose who the person we feel is more correct, than the others available.

The fact that Santorum is strongly pro-life, strongly traditional marriage, strongly Catholic, and strongly pro-family, tells me that his conscience is much better formed than the others. Far from perfect, but certainly better formed than the others.
