Question.

Can ANYONE cast out demons? Reason I ask is because I have a friend who said anyone can cast out demons and basically saying you don’t need to be a priest.

Of course the topic of discussion refers to Mark 9:29 when Jesus answers his disciples on their unability to cast out a demon in his reply "He said to them,“This kind can only come through prayer(and fasting” (Mk 9:29 NAB St. Joseph Edition)

No, we can not.
And trying to do a DIY exorcism is pretty much the dummest thing you can try (and dangerous).
We can call upon Jesus for help, and we can pray for healings, but we don’t talk to Satan directly.

Well, it’s easy to cast them out when they may not be there in the first place. The same as miracle cancer cures which heal those who never had cancer.

There is only one authority on earth which not only has absolute power over the devil, but also the world’s best process for determining if he is there in the first place.

Have your friend read Acts 19:11-20 regarding the seven sons of Sceva. Not pretty.

Is there any reason why your friend would not ask for help.from a priest?

The friend is probably attends one of those churches that considers themselves as part of the New Apostolic Reformation. Casting out demons, praying prayers that ask God to break down any allegedly “demonic” barriers that prevent a specific prayer request from being answered—that’s the kind of thing these churches teach. Got sucked into that sort of thing for a while—even while attending weekly Mass!
Talk about heresy.

I would ask a priest to clarify. There is a bible verse about Jesus giving us His authority to cast out scorpions, snakes, in His name. However, obviously it does not work in all situations which is why there are exorcisms. Isn’t there a verse in the bible about the disciples asking Jesus why their prayers did not work to cast out a demon in someone? I forget where in the bible and Jesus response… but would be worthwhile to clarify with a priest.

The answer is yes and no. There are different demons and different numbers of demons. Some are very nasty and do not want to move along. There are too many variables for any one kind of straight answer to this question. If personal prayer does not do the job, then yes seek a priest.

It was a demonic attack that brought me back to my faith and my wife into the Church about nine years ago. It did not possess us but was in the room with us. Even though I was a lapsed Catholic i still knew the Our Father & Hail Mary well, but this demon would not allow me to complete prayers. Every time I would get to “deliver us from evil” it would not come out and I would either go blank or jumble my words. Even though my prayers were incomplete I did not give up but kept begging God for help. This went on for a long time, it finally seemed to go away, then came back even worse than the first round. Thats when Psalm 23, which I did not know, flowed from my lips and the demon left.

Do not underestimate the abilities of a demon. They are real and can be real dangerous.

“John answered him, saying: Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, who followeth not us, and we forbade him. But Jesus said: Do not forbid him. For there is no man that doth a miracle in my name, and can soon speak ill of me. For he that is not against you, is for you.” Mark 9: 37 -39

This quote would seem to indicate others may exorcise. Many Saints were known to exorcise, that may not have been Priests. The proper way to exorcise is to consult a Priest, who has the authority and power of God. Laity may oppose the devil by prayer, and seek the help of Saints, for example St. Michael. Also St. Benedict and the use of his medal.

From Acts:
“19:13 Now some also of the Jewish exorcists, who went about, attempted to invoke over them that had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying: I conjure you by Jesus, whom Paul preacheth.
19:14 And there were certain men, seven sons of Sceva, a Jew, a chief priest, that did this.
19:15 But the wicked spirit, answering, said to them: Jesus I know: and Paul I know. But who are you?
19:16 And the man in whom the wicked spirit was, leaping upon them and mastering them both, prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.”

Actually it does the opposite. The demon said, “Jesus I know, Paul I know, but who are you?”

Matthew 10:1 And having called his twelve disciples together, he gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of diseases, and all manner of infirmities.

Matthew 17:19 … Because of your unbelief. …

In that example, the 12 weren’t just joe six pak out in the public, but specially selected individuals that Jesus chose. They were being specially trained and educated. AND they would ultimately be ordained by Jesus.

So, IF anyone could do exorcisms, then why would the Church have ordained priests, that are specially trained exorcists?

Is it possible for a lay person to cast out a demon? Maybe…with the help of Jesus and his mother.

However, I think the risk is way to high.
Calling out a demon is opening up yourself to a spiritual attack.

Leave it to those that are properly prepared.

Demons are not just scary humans. They are fallen angelic beings with heightened intellects and powers greater that we are capable of dealing with -on our own-.

So, I’m not sure where the Church recommends that even parents should attempt exorcisms of their own children.
I think the instances where people appear to have taken power over demons are probably not in fact demonic possessions.

I really dont know much about him. But heard through my brothers that his dad was sort of evangelical type. I don’t know. Kind of felt off when he began speaking in that manner. Didn’ t seem right…Kind of like he was intentionally trying to undermine Catholic teaching.

I watched this video, and it was really interesting.
However (unless I missed something), the parents never addressed Satan directly. They were prayer warriors and asked for Jesus to heal their son.
