I don’t know if any of you have heard of a priest from the Philippines with the gift of healing called Fr. Fernando Suarez. Here is his website: fatherfernando.com/index.php

Anyway, he recently came to Orlando, Florida and I went to a Healing Mass and service that followed afterwards. I saw some instant healings and miracles. I saw a woman who could not walk and was in a wheel chair walk and she was almost blind and she could see. There were more. Well, I have had back pain for 20 years and have had three pain surgeries. I have rods in my back and have just accepted my back pain as part of my life. I am now 44 years old. When this priest came to me, he asked me what did I ask of the Lord and I said healing from my back and neck pain. I have so many other medical problems, but these two were my two most bothersome. He asked me to bend over and I did. He hit my lower back, where I had my surgery done three times, real hard with his fist and rubbed his fist up and down my spine. He kept me in the bent position as he asked my husband who was beside me what he asked of the Lord for healing. After he prayed over my husband he asked me to stand up and grabbed my arm and said, “You are healed of your back pain, so to Father …” I don’t remember the priest’s name. I went to the priest, with the mic, who was the one announcing to all in the church the healings. He asked me my name and what was I healed from. I was still in shock for I was not sure if I was healed. I was bending back and forth to make sure for I found it hard to believe. The priest asked me again what I was healed of and I said my back. He asked how long have I had back pain and I said 20 years and that I had 3 back surgeries. This priest could tell that I doubted the healing. He said, “You must claim the healing or the devil will come and give you the ailment again.” So I said that I claim it and thanked Jesus publically. I was without pain for weeks. I had minor aches and pain here and there, but it was not bad.

Well, today I have a lot of pain. It is coming from my incision site and my scar tissues. It is my usual back pain from the tightness of muscles from the scar tissues.

I don’t know what to believe. A true healing from Jesus would make me complete and withtout pain in that area of my body. I have claimed it as they asked me to. Was I really healed or not? I do see a physical therapist who is very cautious of people with the gift of healing because of people like Binny Hinn. He thinks he is a fake and so do I, but I am not saying that this priest is. Apparently, he is big in the Phillipines and is almost as famous as Jesus was when he walked the earth. I watched some the youtube videos on him.

I could have a gradual healing too, but why did the priest say to me, “you are healed from your back pain.” It made it sound like an instant healing.

Please, has anyone had any experience in the gift of healing and all this. This is all new to me. Please explain. It is my fault and was my faith to weak and that is why I have pain again. I will add that I start to exercise and maybe that caused the back pain, but the pain is the same back pain as before. Please help me to understand. Maybe there is someone who has this gift or other gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Help me understand!!

He said it because he is a fake and a charlatan and this is how such wicked people make money.
It is my fault and was my faith to weak and that is why I have pain again.
Your words are heartbreaking. It is not your fault that you have back pain. Pain is a part of life - injuries happen - bad things happen to good people - and there is nothing in Catholic doctrine that claims that pain and trouble signify lack of faith. I’m so sorry that this happened to you.

No offense but how do you know that he is a fake and a charlatan? He appears to be a Catholic priest in full communion with Rome.

Nana3, my heart goes out to you.

These are the reasons why I shy away from healing masses:
  1. Those who are not healed are left feeling as though it is their fault, that their faith isn’t strong enough, or they didn’t “claim” the healing.
  2. The priest rarely talks about redemptive suffering, which is an awesome teaching of our church and talked of frequently in St. Paul’s epistles.
  3. The priest doesn’t address those who aren’t healed – that perhaps God has another purpose in mind for them, or that the healing should occur only if it be God’s will, that we should never expect it; or that perhaps an inner healing is occuring as opposed to a physical healing, which is ultimately more important for our souls are everlasting and our bodies only temporary.
Jesus did teach us to ask for what we want, but He also told us to always pray “Thy will be done.” While we might not understand why some receive physical healing and others don’t, some day we will know the reasons, and for now we are called to trust in the Lord and remember that He loves us more than we can imagine and will always do what is best for our immortal souls.

God bless you, strengthen you, and encourage you in your pain. Please offer your pain to and through Jesus, who can turn your sufferings into great graces for you and those you pray for.

I hope we all recognize that not all Catholic priests are good people.

You might want to read his wikipedia entry (yes, wikipedia can be edited by anyone - the trick is to check the citations, and his check out)… and this is an interesting article:

asianpacificpost.com/portal2/c1ee8c441b9923e1011b99a4af310027_Holy_Melee.do.html

The most salient quote of which is this, from Fr. Suarez:

since I became a priest and in my ministry, I saw it every day . . . everything that Jesus did.

Do you believe that a priest can do everything that Jesus did? I do not.

To be honest, I formed my opinion before looking for further information… for a human being, priest or not, to ask God for healing - hit a woman’s back - and then yank her upward and declare her to be healed in front of a crowd without so much as asking the woman how she felt - told me all I need to know.

I have met Father Fernando. I do not think he is a fake or charlatan.

I went to see him, not even intending to go up for healing. However, I went forward anyway.

I have had and continue to have chronic back trouble. At the time of this healing mass, I was so accustoned to my back pain, it didn’t even cross my mind that it could be healed. As well, there seemed to be so many others attending who were in far worse shape than I. On the other hand, I also had some other issues in my life which I thought maybe the healing would impact those circumstances. I went forward.

We were all lined up facing the altar. Father Fernando walked by. I don’t recall him saying anything to me, just breathing on me. It was like a warm wind in my face. My back pain was gone. I was cautious to talk about it, as I wasn’t sure if I was imagining that the pain was gone. However, as the day went on, I realized I was free of pain. Totally. It was extraordinary for me to be able to stand or sit for long stretches of time.

A couple years later, I had some serious back trouble, but it was not the same issue as I had been dealing with previously.

I do believe you were healed, at least for a time. Why do you think God would allow you to be healed then have the pain return? I am sure God has a reason, and it is for you to discern. Maybe so you will have hope in your suffering? Maybe so you know healing is possible?

I agree with the poster who stated that Father Fernando could deal with the matter of redemptive suffering as well as the inevitability that some will not be healed. Having met him, I would say he is a very simple man, not a sophisticated communicator. He has a gift he did not ask for, but is living his life in a way to be obedient to what God is calling him to do with that gift.

He lives a priestly life, not a fancy life, and he supports a charity (in the Phillipines I believe) with the proceeds donated. It looks like a worthy charity.

imho

I am not sure about priest’s healing I have never been to one, but I think that if someone can be giving a blessing to someone whom is in pain or troubled or hurt or anything wrong, if that person is getting a blessing and a prayer that should help that person because he/she is being blessed by someone whom loves and believes in GOD very much and is praying that GOD may help heal this person at His will…

OP I am so sorry you are going through this, may GOD be able to heal you at His will so that your health problems may be gone sooner than you know it and you may begin to heal better. I will keep you in my prayers. GOD bless…

Nana. Be at peace.
Many people here are afraid of miracles so they slander those who work miracles in the Name of Jesus. But we were comissioned to heal the sick in His Name. We should be more suspicious of the Catholic circles where miracles are not experienced and where there is a generel mistrust in the Power of the Holy Spirit to do the things that are promised in the New Testament…
My sister was healed of back pains 5-6 years ago on an Evagelical healing meeting. She was healed. The pain came back a few times but very rarely, probably because of old habits with bad positions of her body and such. Overall she has no troubles. I cant remember when she last had any pain.
This is just one of many such things happening to friends and family of mine.
Wait and see what happens. Pray. It will give you peace.
Now that you have had the prayer, its not much use to say this but you should always view people at a distance and test their words etc before you let them lay hands on you.
That being said disciples from asia or africa will always have ways that seems strange to a westerner, but that does not mean you should fear them.

Let us know what happens. Peace be with you.

My mother’s friend neighbor went to a healing mass before her surgery date. She had a tumor; after the mass and when it was the time for surgery, there was no more tumor. This has brought her closer to God and she is very eager in learning her Catholic faith.

My mother who had nerve problem that she could not stand; she went to a healing mass but there were more to just attending mass - she prayed and offered up to God whatever He desired. Her pain has gone away for the last 3 years.

God bless you and while you are in pain, do you know that you can pray and unite yourself with Jesus and offer this suffering to Him for conversion of sinners and for Holy Souls in Purgatory? It will be pleasing to God.

Thank you to all for of you who have responded and given me your opinions. I have been to many healing services in the past and those people have talked about redemptive suffering. Those people also mentioned that if the person expected to be cured or healed and had unforgiveness in their heart towards someone, it would not happen. Fr. Fernando did not mention either of these. I do know about redemptive suffering and have for the past 20 years and continue to offer up all my sufferings. I have more pain than just my back and neck. I guess what I was a little confused about is that I have accepted my pain and because I have, I did not think the Lord would choose to heal me for he needs people to offer their pains and sufferings for the conversion of sinners. In fact, I was recently involved in my 8th auto accident, none my fault, and this has aggravated my neck. My neck pain is at its worse in my life. I have to see a Physical therapist three times a week. My mom just told me that the Lord just took away one of my sufferings and I am okay with that, and that is why I was surprised that I have been having back pain this weekend and today. I am still going to claim a healing and hopefully it is a gradual healing, but it is that Fr. Fernando made it sound like an instant healing. Maybe, I doubted and the devil, as that other priest said, gave it back to me, but I never thought of my illness as an illness from the devil, but a blessing from God. I have learned a lot through all that I have suffered and thank God for it. I know the road to heaven is through the Way of the Cross.

I know that gifts of the Holy Spirit exist and that people will do miracles as Christ did and more, for Jesus has said so, so I know that this priest can have this gift and probably does. I did witness some miracles myself happen. I guess when it came to me, I did not expect it first of all for I thought I was chosen for Redemptive suffering, but I still have other sufferings to continue that work.

I am grateful for those who witnessed to me here that they have seen this priest too and have been healed by Jesus through this priest. I do know that Fr. Fernando never took any credit for the healings and he always said that the healing begins with the reception of Jesus’ Real Presence in the Eucharist and that is why he always begins with Holy Mass. The money he collects, he gives to the poor. He did things differently to different people and that part I did not understand. To some he asked what it was that they asked of Jesus to heal and to others, he just laid his hands upon them or breathed upon them. I had my sisters go with me and I had my daughter too. My sister has two children and I had one child. One of my sister’s children has some real issues, anger issues and some mental health problems, maybe autism or depression. The other suffers from depression but does not loose control like her little brother does. He is in a behavioral center, outpatient, presently. My dd has no problems except asthma which is controlled. Anyway, when Fr. Fernando came to my dd, he just touched her nose. When he came to my niece, he just laid a hand on her, but when he came to my nephew and my sister, he asked my sister, “What do you want me to ask Jesus to heal him of?” It was almost as if Fr. Fernando knew who had the problems among the kids, except for the ones that were obvious and in wheelchairs.

I will not judge this priest and say if he is a false prophet or not, but will pray that if I was indeed healed that I will no longer doubt and accept it as possible. I do have other pains I can offer up and other sufferings.

Oh Jesus, forgive me for doubting you and give me more faith. Bless all those here on the forum who responded and are praying for me. Amen.

Thank you to all of you and God Bless you and please continue to pray for me.

This is what is known as the “prosperity gospel” - very popular in certain evangelical Christian parts of the world - AKA “name it and claim it”, it can be very dangerous - as you can tell us, a Christian can begin to doubt their faith if they are not instantly cured.

Stay away from these who will cause you to doubt you have enough faith, God heals in his timetable, as he will.

Thank you Kage, I could not quite put my finger on it, but you are right. I remember my sister when she was big on Binny Hinn telling me always to “claim a healing” and Binny Hinn’s ministry is a prosperity gospel mininstry. I don’t know for sure if Fr. Fernando is or not. I am so confused over all this. I guess, I will just trust in the Lord and leave it in his hands. It is within His wonderful powers to cure me or not. If I am going to be cure, I will be totally painfree someday and if not, I won’t be. Either way, I will accept his will. I follow Christ and not Fr. Fernando. I know that there will be many false prophets during the end of time and may who will do miracles in His name and I am not going to say that Fr. Fernando is one of them or not, but I will be cautious and as for myself and my healing, I leave it all in God’s hands. Thanks Kage for reminding me of what has been bothering me. I just could not put my finger on it. AS I said, I will not judge this priest for it is not my place for if he does have this gift and is a healer from God, I don’t want to be wrong, but I will just remain cautious. You are right about a person beginning to doubt their faith and that is what I was doing. I know I have faith and God has blessed me with good faith. Before all this, I always asked for increase faith and that is what I will continue to do. No one is perfect. Thank you for keeping my feet on the ground and seeing the truth for what it is.👍

I have been to a lot of healing masses and I also had a chance to see that priest here in San Diego. I have knee problems but I was not there to get any type of healing i just wanted to check it out. I do have faith that he has that gift from God and he uses it in his glory. He has it to prove your faith to make it stronger not to show that you lack of it. If the pains comeback say GLORY to GOD that you get a chance to suffer these pains to feel that you are alive. To keep asking for help and to always be moving on and grow in your faith. If that priest comes back to your town intercede for him because he needs a lot of help to!

These are the reasons why I shy away from healing masses:

I agree with you Didi … you gave good advice here.
