Heard any new misconceptions lately?

I know this isn’t a new one, but I just had to share what someone posted to me on a Protestant Board I’m on:
I see how catholics act when they see a statue of Mary. They bow down before it and kiss it and pray to it.

This really puts a funny picture in my head. ALL Catholics bowing and kissing EVERY time they even SEE a statue of Mary.

Some people are just too funny!

Ha ha, maybe your friend was reading this thread! Some high points:

The woman went to the font on the right, dipped her fingers in the water and crossed herself, then did it twice more. Then she dipped her fingers in again and sprinkled some water out in front of her. It was sort of like the way a Priest or Bishop would bless the people. Then she went to the other font and repeated the process.

I have seen very similar activity at our downtown cathedral at noon (12:15, the Rosary always runs late…) mass.

We have an elderly woman I assume is charismatic. She will even imitate the postures of the Saints in the stained glass windows.

That is the** exact** person to whom I referred.

This is a verbatim conversation I had with a young Irishman recently:

YI: “None of the young people in Ireland go to church at all.”
me: “Really? NONE of them?”
YI: “That’s right. They’ve all refused to come any more since the Pope made all those changes a few years ago.”
me: “Which changes in particular do they object to?”
YI: “You know, how the Pope made a lot of changes to the Bible.”
me: “What? What changes did the Pope make to the Bible recently?”
YI: “He changed it so that now the Bible says you’re allowed to have abortions.”
me: (speechless).

I should add that this young man had attended a Catholic school!

My thinking is (correct me if I am wrong) that your “church” was also given a mandate from God to abort all His babies your “church” feels may not meet their prerequisite ( believe in the catholic church and the pope and we will forgive your sins and give you salvation) and only then can you be a child of God. As “the church” continue to abort His babies that they may think are undeserving of His great free gift to mankind, should we really trust “RC-church” to interpret God’s word? I wonder what she think of God now after dealing with you.

Lets say just for one second (can’t do it longer) that I believe that the catholic church is “the only church authorized to feed and serve His flock, and that the catholic church is the only body of Christ, then please tell me why you feel you have the power to abort His babies from your body and yet feel it is wrong for an unbeliever to abort their unwanted babies. They are just following the lead of “the church”. But praise be to God for His Grace, I don’t believe it, because then I would have to believe that you are a reflection of Jesus and we know you are not. Let your spiritual advisers chew on this, everything that you hate about the world is only a reflection of the “church” and you should be ashamed of what you have produce in the name of Christ.

source or link please? Although this seems to have been written by someone several french fries short of a happy meal, it would not surprise me if this sort of thing is being circulated among “vulnerable” populations where it can do harm to souls.

Oi. A little while back someone asked for help dealing with Uristar – was it you? It appears that urisStar may have “issues” beyond the reach of interaction at this level.
 
Just yesterday, I received an email from a good Protestant friend, one who knows I’m in the process of converting. She insisted that, even though Catholics say they’re trinitarian, that we actually believe in a quad that includes Mary - unspoken, unwritten, but ‘understood.’ Uh-huh… I’m still waiting for my secret decoder ring 😉

No, it was Loboto-Me in this thread. I went to offer a hand but I have to admit that her lack of logic and bouncing around all over the place is difficult to address – it’s like talking to a wall. Please feel free to join in. As you correctly pointed out, misconceptions regarding the Catholic faith being circulated among “vulnerable” populations can do a lot of harm to those souls.

I belong to a Men’s Book Club where we read various Theological books and get together to discuss them. The membership includes two Protestants and five Catholics. Anyway, one of the members invited a Baptist friend from out of town to join us. We got off topic and he ended up telling us about his recent trip to the Holy Land.

During his conversation about his trip, he said “There are three major religions in Jerusalem- Islam, Judaism and Roman Catholicism. There is hardly no Christians there. We finally found a Baptist Church but it was almost empty of locals. Most were tourists like us.” You could have heard a pin drop and then one of the Catholics piped up with “Funny thing, I thought the same thing when I was in Auburn, Alabama last month until I finally found a Catholic Church. It was half white and half black and they sat together. Christ is really preached there.”

Reminds me of a quote I heard on Tim Staples’ conversion story CDs. While in the Marines, he welcomed a new person by saying, “Seargent, are you a Christian?” The reply? “Yes, I’m a Christian. I’m CATHOLIC!” 🙂

She did (UrisStar)… I beg you guys to join in and help us out! These people are spreading misconceptions about the Church and we just can’t keep up! I’m not worried about conversion (that’s the job of the Holy Spirit) but the problem is that the more people believe what she says about the Church the further away from the truth they become and won’t even bother to seek it out.

And now I’m losing my temper (hope it’s righteous anger) I think the confessional calls me just in case.

OMGoodness…You must have been in a Borean Bookstore!!! I scared the pants off a lady in there one night just before closing. I went in and was looking for a Catholic Bible and when I couldn’t find it I asked where they were…the lady rolled her eyes at me and said, “If we have any, they will be in the Alternative Bible Section” Well that’s all it took for me to go on a rant that totally embarassed my husband. I asked, “Where do you think your bible came from?” then I answered for her, “The Catholic Bible was the first bible that all other versions were based on. The Catholic Church was the original not the “alternative” bible publishers.” I went on and on…the lady looked so scared that I was some whacko that was going to destroy the place or something. Now, when we pass by the Borean Bookstore my kids and husband always tease me about needing an “alternative” bible. My husband can’t even bring himself to enter the store because he fears someone will recognize me as that “whacko lady” that rants about bibles. waaahaaaaaa…

If I’m not mistaken, the Berean stores have a natural protestant slant to them. If you see a “LifeWay” bookstore, those are Southern Baptist in nature, so I’m not sure what you will find in there. I used to frequent them years ago, but can’t remember whether or not Catholic items were there.

Last night one of my RCIA students came in to class in tears. A couple claiming to be ‘ex-Catholics’ told her that we are an evil cult and that demons stand around the foot of every crucifix during Mass.
 
So sad. Truly demons do stand around looking for an opportunity to pounce on members of Christ, but not at Mass!

PS: Catholic4aReason,Thank you for responding in that horrid thread on the site that Sir and I are becoming frustrated with.
