Heart of St. John Vianney - "Object of Worship"

I’ll be there. The Cure’ of Ars Parish is a great parish. I was a parishoner there until 2002.
 
An article on aol.com about St. John Vianney’s heart claims that it has become an “object of worship”. It is this kind of misrepresentation of relics in the media that cause people to think Catholicism is blasphemous.

Here is the opening paragraph of the article:

In life, St. John Vianney was a revered 19th-century French clergyman who was said to be blessed with the ability to read the hearts of worshippers. In death, his own heart has become an object of worship.

scandalous, perhaps, but not blasphemous.

“worship” has many meanings, and though in modern america we usually reserve it to Latria alone (sadly, i think)…it really has often been used to mean dulia too.

Of course, we don’t give dulia to a single body part…but the Saint themself as a person (their soul, now)

But it can still be an “object of worship” (though the term is certainly confusing) just as a paten or chalice is an “object of worship,” meaning an instrument of worship.

Notice: they did not say “the subject of worship” they just said “an object of worship”

And I think relics and all church appurtanences are objects of worship. And Saints can even be subjects of worship, as long as you specify that you mean Dulia and not Latria.
 
Any person who worships anything other than God is NOT Catholic, let alone Christian. This might be idolatry, I hope the something is done about it.
 
if by worship you mean latria, yes.

But don’t buy the hype that says “worship” HAS to mean latria. It’s imprudent to use it when talking to protestants, as it is scandalous to them, but it can mean dulia too.
 
It’s a positive article, something we need in this day and age.

I personally do not get all worked up by every single word usage. I do not care what protestants or baptists think.
They will think what they want no matter what.

What is important is that beautiful miraculous heart of St. John Vianney.
 
I wish the miraculous and beautiful heart of St. John Vianney were coming to California. I can just imagine how spiritual and Saintly he was in real life. What a gift. 🙂
 
I just returned from the veneration. The heart was brought in in procession with the honor gaurd of the knight of columbus. Evryone was allowed to approach the relic (Heart and Chalice) and there was the sacrament of reconcilliation at five different places around the church. Also, a relic of his skin was in the St. John Vianney Chapel found in this church. Overall it was reverant and hoy, I only found the photographers from the media to be a little bit of a distraction. They should have been given a limited area and not allowed to weave in and out of people trying to pray.
 
I just venerated the holy heart of St. John Mary Baptist Vianney, went to Mass with the holy Bishop of Ars (Guy) and went to confession. I feel sooo blessed!!! 🙂

The line was 1/4 mile long - totally awesome! Just when you think Long Islanders were only interested in their $1000 Barbeque grills and Starbucks lattes, they floor you with their humble acts of faith.👍 Praise God!

I agree that epower’s article was positive. I had actually started a separate thread about the aol.com article but, unfortunately, it was merged into this very uplifting thread. I never actually posted on this thread. The post from me was the intro. to my merged thread. This should be a place to celebrate the occasion of St. John Vianney and the relics coming to the U.S., I agree fully.

This is one thing I could never get behind when I was Catholic, it was so weird to me. Parading a human heart around? I seriously just don’t get it.

It’s a miracle, his heart is incorruptible. It is “paraded” around so people can see the miracle and have their faith in God strengthened.

But it’s a human heart? It doesn’t seem the least bit odd that a human heart is encased and people are bowing down venerating it? How did they remove the heart? Shouldn’t it be with Saint John Vianney?

I do not want to knock it, but even when I was Catholic I avoided any type of this veneration. I just never understood it at all, I found it so bizarre.

Did you get to go? I was there today in time for veneration and then the praying of the rosary. It was beautiful!

My pastor informed us that confessions were going on until 11:00pm at 6 “confessionals” , including the choir loft and a trailer! The heart of the confessor par excellance has this effect on people.

I challenge anyone to venerate this relic for 2 minutes and then come back and say that something special is not happening there!

I am Catholic! I misunderstood the word “worship” in this article, and I forgot that it could also mean to honor or venerate> I am sorry!
