I’ve got another question about heaven/hell. Today somebody, a pagan, wrote a message on Facebook to a woman whose husband is dying, about his eventual passing to another “realm”.

I asked my priest in email if using the terminology of “another realm” is something Catholics can and do use or is it a pagan terminology?

He said, among other things that he guesses “it’s ok to use”. The rest of his email confused me and I’m not certain it’s a pagan thing or not.

Is it?

We can’t see his email. Why are you asking the forum? Write him back and ask him.

I did. I’m waiting to hear back from him but wanted YOUR knowledge as to whether or not it’s ok to use the term " another realm," and if it’s pagan or not.

Realm is just a slightly old-fashioned word for a kingdom or sovereign power - “he travelled to realms beyond the sea”. Why on earth you would imagine such a word would be “pagan” probably puzzled your priest as much as it has puzzled me…which may account for his reply…he simply didn’t know what you were fussing about.

Please don’t worry the poor man again - and don’t sweat the small stuff…

It simply means “moved to another place”…

The term pagan is kind of used these days to describe people who are into certain esoteric spiritual things, but it really just means someone who isn’t a member of a mainstream religion. Most pagan religions have some kind of spiritual realm, be it the summerlands, reincarnation, the afterlife, etc. It’d be hard to know exactly what your friend ment, without knowing what type of paganism they specifically believe in, or what level of spirituality they have since it all differs so much. I think in the context your friend mention ‘another realm’ was to refer to it being unearthly, a place where spirits go but not nessesarily ‘‘heaven’’ in that sense. It’s vague, but can have a lot of meanings depending on the person using it and what their definition of the afterlife is.

As Gilly_Flower said, the word “realm” is just a synonym for kingdom or land. Going to “another realm” after death is exactly what we believe as Catholics, even if our idea of the afterlife is different from that of another religion.

Because it was written by a pagan.

Ok. I wondered because my priest said, “I guess it’s ok to use,” not that it is ok to use, and I took it to mean he’s not sure.

Ok, and where IS heaven/hell? In other realms or dimensions?
We just don’t know.

It is a “place” because those there have bodies.

But it is not a place that can be seen, found or travelled to as we understand it, by transporting our normal human bodies. Life Everlasting requires a change of life, and therefore body.
