RE: the whole Ozzy/biting off heads thing, I’ve actually seen several sources saying he never bit the head off anything, bat, bird, or South Park character.

I believe it was Alice Cooper who said never to believe any rumor about any musician.

Ozzy is, I believe, an agnostic or moderate atheist; Manson is a more strident atheist who called himself a Satanist for publicity; Alice is a born-again Christian (though he has written more songs about necrophilia than the average Evangelical).

Oh and Bon Jovi is not technically “metal”, but they are definitely hard rock.

There. Don’t make me turn this car around.

Yes dad. 😃

As far as August Burns Red, they are good (love youtube!) and I very well may buy some of their stuff, however as a drummer I find that I can often be overcritical at times so let me clarify my “issue” with not just Christian metal but a lot of metal in general…

As I Lay Dying is another Christian metal band, I’d argue probably the most popular one around today only because I’d heard of them long before (years) deciding to convert. They are also good. But when I listen to them and now having listened to August Burns Red and comparing the two I can’t tell a difference between the drummers’ style.

That’s not to say that either is a bad drummer, they’re both phenomenal but there isn’t anything particularly unique about their playing that “grabs” me. But listening to Slayer and Lamb of God… Dave Lombardo is considered the Godfather of heavy metal drumming and Chris Adler is just absolutely sick. Listening to either of them I can immediately tell you who’s behind the kit. A lot of drummers (this can happen on any instrument in any genre) seem to be “cookie cutters” in the sense that they play the same thing that someone else would whereas the two I just mentioned have a very unique and definitive style.

Again, that’s my perspective as a drummer. Anyone who’s not a musician would probably never notice such a thing but in my own playing I make it a point to try to come up with things that might make someone say “what did he just do?!” not in a sense of showing off but just so that it’s unique. The drummers that I admire make me ask that on a regular basis. Lastly, having said all that… please understand I don’t think I’m better than they are… they’re getting paid to hit things with sticks… and to me it’s just a hobby. It’s just my perspective.

ehh I’d take August Burns Red or As I Lay Dying over Lamb of God anyday :). I never liked LoG’s vocal and never got into their sound. Check out this band: myspace.com/thywillbedonemetal

They don’t label themselves as a Christian band, but the members are practicing and devoted Catholics

Bon Jovi is a hair band. Hair bands are more pop than metal.
I listen to Heavy Metal as well.
…Metallica(the early stuff like the black album)
Lol. You gotta be younger to call the black album ‘early stuff’. 😃

I loves me some metallica. I have come to really, really enjoy St Anger. Hope they’re done touring for a while and get in the studio to record an album this year.

I caught this too but wasn’t going to say anything about that being their “turning point” lol.

I’m actually one of the few people that really liked St. Anger when it first came out despite the sound being meh… Bob Rock sucks. But “Death Magnetic”… more specifically “My Apocolypse”… yeaaaa 👍

I listen to a wide variety of music from different eras and genres. My iPod is proof of that.

I learned from my music teacher to appreciate many different types of music both past and present which was a very valuable lesson to learn as a teen.

Yes, I do like some metal music by artists/groups like Evanescence, Within Temptation, Tarja, and Nightwish. Some of themes/music styles they have may be dark and focus on failed relationships as an example, but I am not offended one bit.

For some kinds of music or themes that I don’t like as much, I just choose not to listen to them. I turn off the radio or change the channel.

I don’t let music be a huge influence on my beliefs and behaviors.

I do find listening to music can be a stress reliever for me.

My tastes in music are eclectic at best, downright schizophrenic at worst. Most of what I listen too is decidedly nonmetallic, like the Decemberists or Iron & Wine. However, I have recently done some investigation into Power Metal because I am an avid fantasy fan. Blind Guardian is my personal favorite, if only because they have songs about The Wheel of Time.

As far as the morality of listening to heavy metal, the question is somewhat difficult to assess with a blanket judgement because of the sheer diversity of the Genre. I can easily understand why some people could consider black/doom/death/dark metal spiritually unhealthy. However, much metal is a strictly neutral if not outright positive influence. Power metal tends to draw its influences from fantasy and mythology, and there are many Christian Metal bands.

I feel that Metal, even of the darker variety, can be a perfectly suitable source of entertainment without detracting from one’s spiritual life.

I’m more hair than metal (though the old metal, the stuff that still sounded like singing, was very similar to hair), but Power Metal just grabs me by whatever organ geekiness resides in. When mainstream music bloggers have to use phrases like “take sword in hand” just to describe a song’s emotional effect (and I don’t think they were quoting), you know something’s right with the cosmos.

Welcome to CAF! 👋 Blind Guardian is awesome. 👍 They are one of my favorite bands.

slayer, system of a down, slipknot, metallica, iron maiden, megadeth, and many more.
im a catholic metalhead and even though the stuff they say can be sinister, it really doesn’t matter in my opinion as long as you don’t go doing stupid stuff like setting the Bible on fire or stuff like that

SLAYER!!!

Welcome to the boards. Listening to Slayer is a sin here just fyi

I will say I found two Christian metal bands I can kinda get into. As I Lay Dying and War of Ages… but they still have nothing on Slayer, Lamb of God etc.

I like metal as well. I recently heard Blind Guardian and i like the way it sounds. I’ve been a old school metal head who also listened to stuff like Ozzy Osbourne.

This thread seems dead.
It’s not dead, it’s just resting it’s eyes. 😉

The threads that seem to gain more traction are the “Rock/metal is from the devil!” threads. That’s unfortunate. I enjoy talking about metal music without it getting all polemical.

So I see you’ve recently been exposed to Blind Guardian. What did you hear? They’ve been one of my favorite bands for some time (since “Imaginations From the Other Side” was their new album). I’ve found their lyrics to be pretty compatible with Christianity for the most part, too, which is a plus. Their latest album is the best they’ve put out is a while IMHO. I love “Sacred Worlds”. I can’t stop listening to it once I start. 🙂

Mirror mirror,and the Bard’s Song.

Of course was in a guitar shop earlier today and it seems most effects pedals cost so much.

Other people’s creative works are only as sinful as the power you give them.

I absolutely LOVE some Motley Crue songs, a little Dio, LOVE Van Halen, Metallica, etc., but you won’t catch me acting on the themes of some of their songs. In fact, I don’t even really know what some of the songs are about (although I do know that Motley Crue is heavy on the sex 😉 ), because, as someone else mentioned, I like the MUSIC. I don’t really care about the lyrics if the music takes me on an emotional high. Some classical music does the same thing for me as hard rock and heavy metal. It’s a mood thing. Sometimes, I like to chill with a little Pink Floyd. 🙂

Of course i feel Ernie Ball strings to be the best, only thing is they rust fast.
