What “melodic metal” do you listen too? Have you heard Blind Guardian, Ice Age, Hammerfall, Kamelot? Just curious. No I can see gangster rap and satanic death metal being something on the avoidable list for christians, but I listen to the most melodic forms of metal and hardly any of it is anti christian, I’m only in it for the music so to speak, thats all I’m concerned with being wrong…
This is the second time I’ve heard of a priest throwing Opeth out of a window. There is definitely something wrong about them.I am a rabid metal head. I tend to listen to the more Christian bands though (ZAO, Living Sacrifice, Norma Jean, and others) but I do listen to others that are not so Christian (i.e. Fear Before the March of Flames, Converge, and Dream Theater.) I had a very charismatic priest, who apparently had some gifts of the spirit, he looked at my Opeth cds and threw them out the window. Yes, he literally opened the window and threw them out.
I discovered the thread by checking it out when you gave the link. I like metal myself. I’m not familiar with the bands you mentioned, though. Are they indie bands? What labels are they on? I’m more familiar with the major label metal bands.Weird to see this two year old thread going again. I guess I’m partially to blame for posting the link to it in a current thread
Melodic metal: that’s me! Power metal is my genre. I even produce some shows here in my town (Sonata Arctica, Gamma Ray, Avian, Cellador). I’ve been fortunate to be able to see many of my fav bands of the genre in the last few years: Blind Guardian, Kamelot, Epica, Dragonforce, Rhapsody of Fire.

Johnny’s change in Lyrics made the song so much more powerful. Reznor is a talent himself only if he had more of Johhny Cash worldview of going to hell and coming back a changed man he could maybe get rid of the unnecessary smut that mars otherwise good work. It is a funny point thogh Cash music is darker than people think it was so in the beginning and to the end. He might have been born again and so forth but he never lost contact with the Dark Night of the Soul he seems to have experienced in his life. He was an interesting artist a lot more interesting than most of the artist nowadays who embrace the Dark but not the Soul. Johhny embraced both.Have you heard Johnny Cash’s cover of “Hurt”? It’s amazing. He slows it down even more than Trent Reznor’s original song, and it sounds even darker than Reznor’s version. BTW, Johnny Cash changes the offensive lyric. Cash says “I wear this crown of thorns” which actually makes more sense. Reznor’s original lyric was not just offensive but nonsensical too.
I didn’t know there were others here that listened to metal! I thought I was the only one!Weird to see this two year old thread going again. I guess I’m partially to blame for posting the link to it in a current thread

I can’t stand them, but their frontman/vocalist used to be in Killswitch Engage. Alive or Just Breathing is a very Christian, or at least positive, record. Its their best imo.One of my favorite bands is a band called Seemless. they are a mix of metal and bluesy rock.
the singer is a Christian and most of the lyrics deal with Christian themes.

I have heard and like Dream Theater and Savatage. I never heard of the other bands you mentioned. Did you find out about them from XM, Sirius or indie/college radio?I didn’t know there were others here that listened to metal! I thought I was the only one!
I must admit I’m more a of a Power/Progressive Metalhead. Theocracy is the best new band I’ve come across in a while. The most amazing thing is that the self-titled album is basically a one-man show! The fact that this guy can sing, play all the instruments, and compose songs that have a real depth to them continually amazes me everytime I listen to the album.
Another great Christian metal band that is in a bit more of an operatic/goth vein is Saviour Machine. These guys are pretty amazing IMO. Can’t wait for Legend III:II on 7/7/07! Unfortunately, I heard it would be their last album.
I’m also a big fan of Rhapsody (of fire), Blind Guardian, Kamelot, Ayreon, Dream Theater, Savatage, Galactic Cowboys, Royal Hunt, etc., etc.

They are definitely not mainstream. Although Dragonforce’s recent success is bringing more of these bands to the mainstream (e.g. Cellador). They are not indie bands. Many of them are signed to Nuclear Blast. Most are from Europe.I discovered the thread by checking it out when you gave the link. I like metal myself. 100% agreement. Anyone who likes metal and wants to hear a rock solid Christian band w/ incredible lyrics, do yourself a favor and give them a try: myspace.com/theocracybandTheocracy is the best new band I’ve come across in a while. I don’t listen to any radio. I know them…Because they’re associated with other bands I listen to that aren’t all that mainstream. Some of them aren’t quite subversive, while others are. Try myspace. Most bands these days have one.Where are these bands played? XM, Sirius, indie/college radio?
Back in my undergrad college days (about ten years ago), I had just discovered the internet and stumbled upon some website for “If you like Dream Theater, you might like these bands…” I’ve never heard any of them on the radio, I just sort of found them through association. I also discovered a lot of bands through the Laser’s Edge (www.lasercd.com). They sell this sort of music and tend to give fairly honest and useful reviews of the albums they sell. I have bought many a CD based on their reviews and have seldom been disappointed!I have heard and like Dream Theater and Savatage. I never heard of the other bands you mentioned. I saw Saviour Machine at Cornerstone back in 2001. That was right after Legend III:I came out. It was definitely an awesome show!Joe, you and I are like long-lost musical brothers! I love all that stuff.
You’re right Saviour Machine is done after this album. I am desperately hoping they play a few shows after it comes out, because I want to see them one time before they hang it up. The odds are slim, though. I’ll travel if I have to.
Where do you live? I promote power metal shows up in MN. I also go to ProgPower in Atlanta.
Thanks for the link! I’ll check out the CD’s.Back in my undergrad college days (about ten years ago), I had just discovered the internet and stumbled upon some website for “If you like Dream Theater, you might like these bands…” I’ve never heard any of them on the radio, I just sort of found them through association. I wouldn’t trust Wikipedia.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Hetfield
I do like “Creeping Death”. “Disposable Heroes” and “One” are also excellent. “One” is based on the book ***Johnny Got His Gun ***by Dalton Trumbo.
