Height in Relationships

They’d probably compliment about other things? Height is a desirable trait for men in business - they seem to convey more authority than a shorter person with similar social skills. Also, I read a study that found height to be a factor in dating. Apparently, relationships in which the man is taller tend to work better. I’ll have to find that.

So anyway, height is useful for a lot of things, ranging from business to sport. It makes sense to compliment on it, as long as no one from the National Organization for Short People (or whatever it was) are around 😉
Yes, I don’t mind the compliments. haha I am happy when someone says something nice about my kids…and of course they say other things. But, I have noticed this to be something that people say first, about my son, in particular. When he went to get his wisdom teeth pulled last week–the oral surgeon’s assistant said…‘so, do you get your height from your dad? it’s nice being so tall isn’t it?’ he wasn’t feeling well, and barely replied, but again–I took note that even a stranger commented on it.

I don’t know?🤷

Hi Whatever girl,

I notice this too, I’m 5’3 my husband is 6 ft. I would like my son to be tall, if my daughter is short, I don’t really mind.

I am not sure why. I know my dad was tall, and perhaps we look for men like our fathers. And Dad was picky, DH was the only guy I brought around that my Dad liked.

By the way my younger sister is 5’9. Six inches really show especially if she’s in heels and I’m in flats.
I know–maybe I’m lumped in with the people I’m talking about.😊 😃 But, I’m happy to see that my son is tall…my daughter is already 5’6" and she is only 11. But, it seems in our society something to ‘be proud of.’ I mean, you can’t choose your lot when it comes to tallness. 🤷

I’m 5’10 male, and my dating range has been 5’4 - 5’8.

I’m 5’5" tall. My boyfriend is about 6’2". This is rather annoying because I will never be taller than him in heels 😉 I’ve never dated anyone shorter than me, though one boyfriend was only a bit taller than me.

My three closest college friends are all taller than me (their heights are between 5’ 6" and 5’ 10" or so). They have a term for a guy being much taller than a girl: “wasted height”. My relationship qualifies, but since my boyfriend is also a grade below me and therefore still in high school, he’s “allowed” 😉 One of the girls is dating someone about her height; the other two are single.

10" disparity no problem, since he doesn’t dance

Interesting that you say that…

I never thought height was really a big deal, but last night I went to my first dance class. My main partner was probably about my height, or maybe slightly taller, but I was wearing 3" heels, so I was taller. I think that did make it more difficult for him to lead. When we switched partners, it did seem easier to dance with someone who was well over 6’.

Also–EVERY SINGLE ONE OF MY CLOSE GIRLFRIENDS is at least 5’9"–ever since college days, as a matter of fact. don’t choose my friends, really…but rather I am typically asked to lunch here at work by only tall women, for example. haha I just thought about that.:hmmm: I did have two close friends in PA, who were as short as me, but that’s about it-every single close friend is tall.

I’m 5’8", DH is 5’11". 🤷

Before I met DH, I dated a couple guys who were only my height or even a couple inches shorter. I noticed that those guys tended to be very aggressive and competitive. Now I’m NOT saying all short men are this way, but the guys I dated were. Needless to say, we didn’t get serious. Their height didn’t bother me, but their attitude did. Most of the taller guys I dated were more laid back. 🤷 Just a personal observation.

That is a very interesting comment, teakafrog makes. We have a neighbor, and he is as short as me (5’4") and is very competitive…always telling us the latest and greatest thing he bought–always competing with my husband about who’s football team is better:rolleyes: My husband said that he believes it to be probably an insecurity he has with his height, as men have more hangups than women about such things. That’s his guess, not saying that all short men are like this–but I see short men in business have an ‘edge’ to them…like they are a bit more aggressive and competitive with other men in the office. Interesting dynamic.🤷

I have seen that with physicians as well, especially surgeons. We call it “short man syndrome.” Not all are like that, though; I have known some shorter men who were kind, gentle, laid-back souls.

I am 5’11" and in all my life, I think I dated maybe 4 guys who were taller than myself. Height is a total non-issue to me, although I was a bit more conscious of it in high school because others would make comments. I am a big girl with a large, husky build – I look healthy at 175# and too thin at 160#, and I have found over the years that many short men find my Amazonian glory to be an attractive trait, not a liability! 😃 (BTW, ex-h was 5’8").

For girls, height is absolutely meaningless for the most part. Unless a woman was afflicted with dwarfism or another growth condition, I don’t think guys would notice. Kylie Minogue is 5 feet tall, and she’s a worldwide ‘sex symbol’.

On the other hand, a short man is pretty much busted. I’m 5’8" and I know many women would consider me too short for them even if they thought I was attractive in other ways. Good thing I’m married to a woman who is 5’4"!

So Eyore, don’t worry about your height. Guys simply DO NOT CARE.

I would say up to 6’2 or so … guys taller than that tended to be more self centered in my experience… again this is a very limited sample of humanity and certainly is not a generalization… just something I noticed for the VERY tall males that I have hung around.

My older son is considerably shorter then his brother. I have to admit, I have never had anyone tell my oldest, “It certainly is nice being a couple inches below average height isn’t it?” His younger brother gets complimented for being six foot.🤷 Height seems like a silly trait to have either positive or negative feelings about, doesn’t it?

I could see why kag’ar would get annoyed.

Oh yes. People actually ASK me “so, do you like being short” - I answer “yes, I hated being tall so I went and had myself chopped down to size”.

Please.

haha exactly. I have a sister in law who I love to pieces – we get along like long lost friends. She will comment on how ‘tall her husband is,’ and why my husband isn’t as tall as hers.:rotfl: It just makes me laugh, because it’s so inane to me to compare her husband to my husband, when talking about height. I was joking about it with my husband, and he said…yeah, but I’m smarter.😃 (Her husband is 6’4" something like that and mine is right at 6’) Big woop!😛

It’s funny, because height is height. I see when really tall men walk through here at work–the looks of other men who are shorter…like they act like a celebrity has entered the room.😛

At 5’9", I’m about an inch and a half taller than DH, and that’s not really a big deal. What has been a big deal for vain little me 😊 lately is that I out-weigh him by about 10 -15 lbs. My hormones have been so on edge lately (newly preggo) that just the thought of this is enough to make me want to crawl into a hole and hide… Not to mention that when i’m 8 mo. pregnant I out-weigh him by about 40 lbs. So much for dainty and feminine.

When we married, I was thin at 145 lbs, and we were right about the same weight… 6 pregnancies later, I’ve gained, and he hasn’t. 😦

For me the hardest part of my height has been the fact that people equate height with age. I am in a master’s degree program for education, and when I go into the schools, I frequently get mistaken for a student- even in the elementary school! This can be embarassing, especially since I make a conscious effort to dress professionally. It was something that I used to see as an obstacle to relationships since I didn’t think guys my own age would see me as a romantic interest because I look too much like a kid.

I hadn’t thought of the dancing part with my bf too much, I don’t think he really likes to dance (although I do). I have a picture on Facebook of me with a friend from the Catholic Newman Center dancing at our semi-formal. He is 6’3" so he got down on his knees as a joke, and he was still almost as tall as I was in heels! We joke about it a lot, from almost anybody else it would have been insuting, but from him it was just funny.

Because of my former job, I used to work with lots of people around my height, we did have a couple of men who were under 5’0" tall. I didn’t notice them trying to be overly agressive or compensate for their height in any way, but then, because of our job, it was actually a desirable height to be. It’s the one place I have felt truly comfortable with my height, because so many of us were short, they had things where we could reach them, a rarity for me. It was nice not to have to climb shelves and counters just to get something down.😛

:rotfl:… omgosh I’ve never had to experience that one… what a great response, though!

In my professional career (electrical engineer), there are so few women as it is… and those who do enter engineering are usually foreign (Indian, Asian, etc)… so I tend to fit in with their average heights fairly well!.. so it’s never been much of an issue!

I have never heard of the orginization stated above.

EeyoresButterfly:
I know that the National Organization for Short Statured Adults (NOSSA), of which I am a member…
Some may find it shocking, but, many people with dwarfism are successful in business, entertainment, education and (sit down for this one) - sports.
Who would find that shocking? Certainly not me, since I didn’t say anything about it being impossible for shorter people to be successful at those things. Well, good luck in your debate with your imaginary opponent…

Get offended first, ask questions later. Good policy, my friend.

You see, the fact that you find it acceptable to make a jab at people with short stature and are shocked that someone finds it offensive speaks VOLUMES.

Would you have made a similar remark about a group like the NAACP or the Anti-Defimation league? I think not. It is hip and kinda cool to mock short people 🤷
