I think it would be more accurate to say that Hell, in part, is the absence of union or communion with God. There is not place where God is not present. Hell is rather being in God’s wrathful or judgmental presence. But not completely out of His presense. Being in His presence, yet beyond His mercy would truly be Hell.
Is this in harmony with Catholic teaching? Or it the Catholic view strictly that God is not there in any sense? But I don’t see how that is possible. Even in Psalms we are told that we God is in Sheol.
