You can because he has both divine and human nature.
I do not have a divine nature. I’m only human.

I’m not perfect. Nowhere near it. I’m so far away from perfect, no wonder God doesn’t want me.

I can’t compare myself to Christ. He was and is perfect. I’m so imperfect, I question why I’m on this planet.
Don’t feel bad about yourself. We are all imperfect. Realizing imperfection is the door to perfection.

The point is that you and Jesus both have human nature, and both have had suffering. In that way you can compare yourself to Christ.

The Church teaches the dogmas of faith that God always makes the first effort to save us and that one cannot save oneself through their own human nature. Every human is made in the image and nature of God.

Catechism
2000 … actual graces which refer to God’s interventions, whether at the beginning of conversion or in the course of the work of sanctification.

2001 The preparation of man for the reception of grace is already a work of grace. This latter is needed to arouse and sustain our collaboration in justification through faith, and in sanctification through charity. God brings to completion in us what he has begun, "since he who completes his work by cooperating with our will began by working so that we might will it:"50

Indeed we also work, but we are only collaborating with God who works, for his mercy has gone before us. It has gone before us so that we may be healed, and follows us so that once healed, we may be given life; it goes before us so that we may be called, and follows us so that we may be glorified; it goes before us so that we may live devoutly, and follows us so that we may always live with God: for without him we can do nothing.51

That is a long journey, a part of it in this life and the rest in another life…
I’m afraid of the journey in the afterlife.

But how do I know I am cooperating sufficiently and good enough with God’s grace? I never know. Since I’m not perfect clearly I can never do that, so how can I be saved? God, who created me without my cooperation, will not save me without my cooperation.

I don’t believe anyone is born Hellbound. Prophet Muhammad taught that every child is born in a state of fitra, meaing that they are born pure and with a disposition towards righteousness. It is only by influence of a child’s parents that make them christian, jewish, zoroastrian, etc. I believe that Heaven/Paradise is the “default position”, if you want to call it that.

What is impossible for man is possible for God. “He who endures to the end will be saved” (Matt. 24:13; cf. 25:31–46).

If you willfully choose not to cooperate then you choose eternal suffering. If you willfully choose to repent and resist temptation (persisting through any failures) and die in holiness, then you reach heaven.
