So Christians around the world have been doing AMA’s so I thought it would be nice to give it a try! I’m an 18 year old cradle Coptic(that mean Egyptian), and I’ve lived in Egypt all my life (so far!). I’m not a professional with Christian technical words in English but I’ll do my best. In a dominantly Muslim nation with ISIS around the corner in neighboring Syria it is not normal situation. You cant find many Copt catholics because ~90% of Coptic catholics live in Egypt and we are a minority in Christian minority of Egypt(in Egypt Christians are 10-15% of total population).

You know, I think I actually have a question. What is Christmas like in Egypt? (lol) I ask because I found out that Christmas is a public holiday in Egypt which seems odd for a Muslim country, though I see that Christians make up around 10% of the population in Egypt. Do non-Christians actually take part in any Christmas celebrations? If so, what percentage of the Egyptian population as a whole takes part in Christmas celebrations? What is done? What is it like?

Christmas and Easter are public holidays in Egypt yes. Coptic Orthodox church celebrate Christmas at 7 January, coptic Catholic church celebrate Christmas at 25 December. 92% of Egypts Christians are members to Coptic Orthodox Church. The other 8% belong to Coptic Catholic Church,Protestant churches and Easter Orthodox Church.Christians in Egypt are 8-11 million peoople.

Do Muslims celebrate Christmas with Christians in Egypt?

Christmas in Egypt is a religious holiday. Not secular as Christmas in West.A minority of secular muslims celebrate christmas with west tradition.

Catholic Copts are minority in Egypts Christian minority. The majority(92%) are Coptic Orthodox christians.Sometimes we listen for churches(Orthodox,Catholicc,Protestant) who destroyed by muslims. All christians in Egypt have got problem with ISIS and muslim brotherhood. But we have not got the big population like as Coptic Orthodox christians and that mean attacks against Coptic Orthodox christians are more easy.

I know officially that the Coptic Catholic Patriarch is not called pope but in every day language do you call him “pope”?

How different is the Coptic Catholic liturgy and customs to the Coptic Orthodox liturgy and customs?
Are they identical or are there minor differences ?

And what is your relationship with the Coptic Orthodox?

I’m in Africa too. I’m South African catholic. We are Roman as you know most of Africa is. It’s good to hear from Coptic Catholic brothers!

I’m sorry that you guys face that sort of thing. I heard a story that a Copt woman had her cross torn off of her and berated by a Muslim as an infidel. Is that common?

Hello!
How are things now in Egypt? In the news it says it is peace and then they say it is not. I hope you can have a peaceful Christmas this year.

The situation for Copts is not so good as 1950.With rise of muslim religious practise last 30 years the life for Christians is not so easy. For example before 40 years a tiny minority of girls wear hijab in university.Today the majority wear hijab.

Is the conflict with the Muslim majority religious or mainly political? We are informed that the conflict is religious but Pope Francis insists that it is religious, the Imams claim so.
I saw news of Copts being crucified and asked to give Christ up (convert to Islam) and this looks religious to me.

That’s pretty serious stuff. I’ve heard that it’s always tough being Christian in a majority Muslim country.

I dont know.Manytimes imams are who hate christians.I met pope Francis when he visit Egypt and speak with Coptic Catholic christian youth team.
