I try to understand the state of the dead this way.
Firstly, heaven is not a place but a state.
Those who are in heaven are with God.
God is everywhere.
So, those who are with God (Who is everywhere) are not placed in a cage somewhere or on a faraway planet. They are with God (God is everywhere, here and now). Those who are with God (here and now) can hear us!
