First of all, Christianity does not “require” proof of God but rather faith in God. Hence why you are not Christian. I’m not asking you to proove anything. I’m just asking you to tell me where love comes from. It’s pretty simple. You either believe it comes from a being or a thing. Obviously, you believe love is a physical attribute (a form of DNA perhaps) attributed by a physical attribute (DNA, which forms all physical traits in life on earth), which makes no sense at all.

So sense you cannot tell me where love comes from, I choose to believe it comes from God. I am making a choice just as you are.

I choose God.
I’m quite sure somewhere, deep down in our brain, DNA or something similar we have found or will find the gene, nerve center or something similar which defines love. If we have not found that yet, that does not provide proof that it does not exist.

I cannot tell you right now where love comes from, but in a sense you are instead choosing a made up story which defy many laws of nature. I personally can’t see how that is better.
You’re the one that came on a Catholic board saying God doesn’t exist, so the onus is on you to prove it.
That is a good point. Still, I’m not 100% sure god doesn’t exist, and I doubt science can tell us that something absolutely undoubtedly does not exist. Science does tell us though, that it is very unlikely.

I want to thank all of you for an interesting and very educating discussion, I hope I didn’t offend anyone who didn’t offend me, and I hope some of you may have gained some from this also. I’ll shop around here a while to learn more about catholisism, but I’m not going to convert, no. ;p

I’ll also do some research, the origin of love seems interesting and although I would love a citation from where it says that love cannot be found in the DNA, I made the assumption so the burden of proof is on me. I’ll do some research on that and perhaps get back to you guys later. Thanks for your time. 😉

I need to research that more. Absense of proof is not proof of absense. 😉

Atheism does not explain anything though. An atheist is a person without a belief in a supreme being. There’s nothing more to it. Science might do a bad job describing what love comes from, but it can’t simply choose not to. There’s no such unity. I’m quite sure that if science has not found the answer yet, it’s still looking.

ntengalia, if it does not involve emotion, what does it involve?

jam, I rely on something logical according to the laws of nature and the scientific research we have done. I don’t change my life according to it though. I claim god cannot be proven - absolutely. Can you prove god?

ntengalia, no love in an atheist? That’s just nonsense.
What you described is simple survival. Just because I feed someone does not mean I love that person.

Someone already supplied a reasonable explanation. If you reject it without reason, that is your choice.

What created God?
No, as I recall no one told me where love originated only what it consists of and how it is preserved by “natural selection”. Something first has to exsist to be preserved. It must be created to exsist. So no, no one has given a reasonable explanation.

Do you have one to offer?

**Edit:

What created God? Let’s first tackle who or what created love. K?

You want to know what created God? Ask Him and listen for the answer, not with your mind (closed as it is), but rather with your heart.

the argument that love exists therefore so does god is the most logically preposterous assertion I’ve heard in a while here on CAF (or anywhere for that matter).

Love is emotion and learned behavior … two traits humans share with our fellow mammals lower on the food chain. Dogs feel emotion (yup it’s true … look it up if you need to), and mammals like dogs can learn (albeit due to much smaller brain size they can’t learn much). So arguably even dogs feel an emotion akin to love (although it would be much more primal – in correlation with their lower intellectual capacity).
So your Mom had to learn to love you? Do you think she would learn to dislike you and eventually learn not to love you once she saw more and more the hurtful things you write on CAF about her Faith and religion?

You must be using a different definition of origin.
Something first has to exsist to be preserved. It must be created to exsist.
So I’ll ask you again… What created God.

Well, first of all he/she is confused about love. Love is not a behavior, but an emotion or state of being.

These historians - Tacitus, Pliny the elder, and Josephus wrote of Jesus. And you must not understand how history works, as most of what we know of every figure/event in ancient history was generally written hundreds of years later. Do you believe Alexander the Great existed?
People write about Jesus Christ today.

Is that evidence the man actually existed?

My conclusion:

Atheism 0
Christianity 1

Atheism does a horrible job of explaining the origin of love …it just chooses not to. Awesome. 🙂
The thing about atheists is we have the option of simply saying “I don’t know” rather than boldly asserting we have the answer with nothing to back it up but smoke and mirrors.

Another thing about atheists is that we do not share anything other than a lack of belief in a deity, so you will find some who are better at expressing their reasoning and those who perhaps should delve deeper before asserting their belief of no god.

You must be using a different definition of origin.

So I’ll ask you again… What created God.
What does it matter? I mean really. I think you know all the answers that believers can give so are you just asking to be spiteful. Is there really any sort of proof that you would yield to anyway? Really what’s the point?
