Hello I was wondering what I should do (in the best interest of my faith) if I were dealing with SSA. I have just started to notice this in the last few years, and want to know if even having SSA (same sex attraction) is a sin. I know that I will never act upon the impulses, and am just wondering what I should do, and of course whether or not having SSA is a sin.
:highprayer:

No, finding yourself with certain inclinations is not a sin. It is actions and choices that you make in response that can stray into sin.

Continue to pray and practice the faith. Don’t give up! That goes for any Christian, of course. Imitate Christ and love others. And welcome to CAF, I see you are new here. 🙂

Stay close to our Lord present in the Blessed Sacrament. Cling to His
Most Blessed Mother. Receive the Sacraments frequently. You acknowledge this is an issue for you, take responsibility and fortify yourself with the many helps the Holy Spirit gives us. And trust our Holy Mother the Church.

This is what has worked for me.
I’ll keep you in my prayers. Please pray for me.

I will keep you in my prayers Raaucoin, and thanks for the encouragement.

The Courage Apostolate is designed to help those with SSA to live chaste lives. You can call your diocese to see if there is a chapter. Also, the website is full of helpful information.

God bless you.

Welcome. There is a support group through the Catholic church called Courage. It’s for those who struggle with SSA and offers strengh and support and encourages members to be chaste. Most groups use the 12 step program, and they usually have a priest present at their meetings. Some have found this group very helpful. You should see if there are any groups near you.

The link is CourageRC.org. Hope this is helpful.

They use the 12 step program like AA? Homosexuality is considered an addiction that needs to be beaten by this group? That is rough. I feel horrible for anyone that is involved in any of these programs.

You have it all wrong. It’s to help people stay chaste, and I believe it’s actually a 14 step program, but not all groups use this model. Just like people who do not want to give into lust or adultery or desires of the flesh outside of marriage, there is help for those who struggle to stay chaste in mind, body and spirit.

I understand this, and not giving into desires of the flesh is likely to improve quality of life…but not giving into feelings of love and affection for people (even if they are the same sex as you) is just going to bring down their quality of life. I don’t know if you are married, but can you imagine belonging to a church that said that if you had a relationship with your spouse it was sinful and that they had a 12 step program to help you not give into your desires to love your spouse? That would be horrible, and that is exactly what many of these people are likely going through.

True love and affection, like those found in platonic friendships, are healthy because they don’t cross boundaries. When I say crossing boundaries I mean having sex or romantic feelings of love towards those of the same sex. The Catholic church calls these attractions
“disordered” because if acted upon, they can’t produce life. There is nothing wrong with having appropriate affectionate feelings towards the same sex, but true love toward the same sex does not include having sex with them.

There is always a root cause if one does have feelings for the same sex. When there is a real or perceived lack of connection or rejection from the same sex parent or a child’s boundaries were crossed through sexual abuse which confuses or distorts their sexual identity. We all have a legitimate need for same-sex bonding, and when this need hasn’t been met or has been distorted, it can be sexualized when one comes of age trying to fill that void.

Or otherwise referred to as an illegitimate way to fill a legitimate need.

I suggest you talk to a priest in confession (simply having SSA is not a sin, but it can affect your spiritual and emotional well-being and lead to sinful behavior) about this. Some have found support groups such as Courage helpful, but I believe prayer, frequent reception of the Sacraments (especially the Eucharist and Confession), and good company with faithful Catholics each are more helpful than support groups.

Based on your writing style, I am guessing that you are young. The advice given above is very good, and I would follow it, but I like to add this note to young people struggling with SSA: you’re not struggling with anything that anyone else in your life isn’t struggling with. All youth are called to perfect abstinence until marriage, which is typically 10 - 15 years after the onset of sexual desire. Regardless of whether you’re heterosexual or not, we’re all in the same abstinent boat until we’re older, and it’s hard for everyone.

This doesn’t help at all on a practical level, but I find it comforting to remember that I’m not an isolated minority struggling with these problems. I’m just one more young human male trying to learn to live with a sexual faculty that is completely out of control.

I’ll keep you in my prayers all the same, Philology.

On an unrelated note, I discourage people from responding to bingbang. He is disingenuous, sardonic, deliberately provocative (especially in threads where calm, peaceful counsel is most urgent), and, rather than admitting error, he abandons threads when it becomes clear that he is incorrect. Put another way, bingbang is a particularly articulate troll. I would like to see him reform and become a productive (if dissenting) contributor to this community, but to date I have seen no evidence of a desire to do that. I see only deliberate attempts at disruption, and I would hate to see him derail yet another valuable thread of counsel.

How can you say that about support groups? Have you been in Courage?

No, being cursed with SSA is NOT a sin. It’s something that has was done to you by no fault of your own. I, too, share this curse. I have no idea whether I did anything to deserve it or if I’m being punished for someone else’s sin, but I do know that it is a curse (Rom. 1:24-27).

That being said, the Church’s prescription is exactly the same as it is for every other Christian: chastity in your state of life. The first part is not difficult to grasp but the second part: state of life. This is a question I’ve dealt with for a long time and I’ve concluded that there are extremely limited vocations one with SSA are permitted to live in the Church:

In general, the priesthood and religious life are both out for the SSA accursed.

In general, marriage is out for the SSA accursed.

In general, any vocation within the Church that involves contact with minors is out for the SSA accursed.

You’re also stuck with the perpetual single state.

I hate to paint such an ugly picture, but that’s the way I see things in the Church for those with SSA.

Wow, that doesn’t paint a very good picture.

I don’t look at it as a curse but something that was internalized early in my development. If you read post #12, you will see the likely origins of why you feel the way I do. I say “likely” because nothing is set in stone. There are plenty of strugglers of SSA who received a certain amount of emotional healing from past hurts and abuse and went on to lead very productive lives. I met a priest through Courage who struggled with these feelings, but as long as priests are celibate they can become priests. Also, there are people who are strugglers who’ve gone on to be married, who were further emotionally healed. Remember, God is the Great Physician.

For some the healing is quick, for others it’s a journey, but if we trust in God and turn to Him with our pain and disappointment, He will heal us if we ask Him. First, He wants a relationship with us though and will draw us closer through the pain and struggle. It can make us stronger and closer to God if we don’t act out on it. Peace to you.

Another good encouraging resource to look at of those who have overcome SSA but may be tempted now and then is exodusinternational.org. It has wonderful resources of people who give their testimonies of what God has done in their lives and how they have gone on to be married or live very productive lives.

You’re right…it’s not a pretty picture.

That’s why I’ve actually chosen the path of healing. I’ve done a lot of work on the father issues, the mother issues, am working on the peer issues, but I’m kinda stuck on God. That being the philosophical question: how can one trust someone who would sit by and watch while others harmed you and, having the power to send encouragement or some means of help, do nothing? That’s the problem I have with regard to God right now. I accept that it’s happened (I can do no other, after all, I can’t travel back in time without messing up the space-time continuum…unless the multiverse theory is true, but I’m from this universe…anyway, I digress), but I wish I knew I was subjected tot his.

I’ve lost most sexual interest in men and have found my eye is drawn to legs, faces and hair on women. I still have a lot of issues to overcome when it comes to women, i.e., trust as well as my own body shame issues (I’m also obese. :() as well as the notion that sex is dirty and demeaning to women (yes, that’s the message I got when I was a young Christian).

The advice you have been given in this thread is good, and I would only add this: be patient. I, for a long while, thought I was gay, but it inexplicably went away recently. I have been contemplating why it went away, and I have, I think, come up with the following reasons:

-Poor body image. I just didn’t take care of myself and didn’t present myself to others very well. I, therefore, resented other young men who did take care of themselves and who did present themselves well, and I misunderstood that insecurity as attraction. Because I couldn’t identify with other young men, I regressed or subconsciously identified with young women. But as I ate better and worked out, my body image improved. And with Jesus, I was able to identify with a man.

Anyway, that’s my pseudoscience. 😛 Be patient is my advice, you never know who you might change.

Why do bad things happen to anyone? Some people have no legs or no arms, why? Maybe they find strength in their struggle. But I do know that the thorn that Paul had made him strong in the Lord and dependent on Him which enabled him to accomplish great things for Christ. “My grace is sufficient for you because when I’m weak then I’m strong” was Paul’s motto and look how he was used for Christ!

Why can God stand by and watch? Well, it might be that He gave man free will. Yes, we are not robots who are forced to love God and follow Him, He wanted to make that our choice. You wouldn’t want anyone to force you to love them, would you? Also, all the trials and problems that we have had can be used to help others., Maybe that’s why He lets things happen also. Read any of the saints or other Christian’s stories who went through a lot only to be at a certain place in time to help someone else with the same problem! Amazing!

May you find strength in Your struggle and turn to God with your frustrations Who might help you to understand the “whys”.

By the way, that’s great progress! Congratulations!

Praise God!
