Help me to learn to pray the LOTH

I just ordered the 4 volume set of the leather bound Liturgy of the Hours for $122.56 including shipping from biggerbooks.com. If, for memorials - obligatory or not - we always use the psalter for the psalmody - psalms, canticle, antiphons - when would we use the psalmody antiphons listed in the common of doctors (where the memorial refers us)?

Only when the Office is celebrated with a higher degree of solemnity, such as when it is celebrated as a Solemnity or Feast. That would be the case if the Office were celebrated in a church or place in which St. Teresa is the principal patroness (e.g. St. Teresa of Avila Parish Church. St. Teresa would be a Solemnity in this case).

Feasts. If you are a Carmelite, this would be a Solemnity for you. You would use the Common then (if the Order does not have its own Office). If you belong to St. Teresa of Avila parish, you would use the Psalms in the Common.

Actually, I’m just a tiny bit confused, and it’s cuz since I was using Christian Prayer, I never really learned OOR, so I’m getting it figured out now - with your help.

Is this the order, then?
Unless there’s a OOR replacement in the Proper of Saints (St. Martin de Porres), I’ll always pray both OOR readings from the Proper of Seasons, right?

If my assumption above is correct, then, since the Proper of Seasons has both readings for every day, when would I ever use any of the OOR readings in the Comm. of Rel. (or any OOR readings from any Common)?

As far as I can tell, all memorials have Proper second readings. So if you observe a memorial, you will have to read the first reading from the Proper of Seasons, and the second reading from the Proper of Saints.

If one of the saints happens to be the patron fo your parish, diocese, etc. and his/her ranked is raised to a Feast or Solemnity, the First Reading is replaced by the appropriate Common. As far as I can remember, there are no memorials on the calendar in which the First Reading is not from the Season.

The GILH on Memorials:

In the office of readings…

a. the psalms and their antiphons are taken from the current week and day, unless there are proper antiphons or proper psalms, which is indicated as the case occurs;

b. the antiphon at the invitatory, the hymn… must be those of the saint if these are given in the proper; otherwise, they are taken either from the common or from the current week and day;

c. the concluding prayer from the office of the saint is to be said;

d. in the office of readings, the Scripture reading with its responsory is from the current cycle.

The second reading is about the saint,
with a proper Responsory or one taken from the Common;

If there is no proper reading, the patristic reading for the day is used. The Te Deum is not said.

For Solemnities and Feasts:

In the office of readings, everything is proper: the hymn, the antiphons and psalms, the readings and the responsories. The first reading is from Scripture; the second is about the saint.

In the case of a saint with a purely local cult and without special texts even in the local proper, everything is taken from the common.

No, unless you again celebrate the Saint with a higher degree of solemnity.

Normally, though, outside of solemnities and feasts, and votive offices, you will never read anything from the Common.

Hi everyone. After reading this thread, I think I’ve been doing it mostly right. I’ve been ‘upgrading’ all the memorials by using the commons, etc. Glad I don’t have to: getting really tired of Sunday Week 1 three or four times a week.

But I do need some help. What do you do for the little hours when you only have one antiphon listed ie the Office for the Dead? I’ve been keeping the usual antiphon-psalm-glory be-antiphon-antiphon-psalm-etc. and just using the same antiphon (instead of having 3 different antiphons).

In a case such as this (you will encounter it again in Advent, Lent, and Easter), simply say the antiphon at the beginning, then recite the psalm, then the Glory, then pause a bit for silence. Then go straight to the second psalm, then Glory, then another pause. Then go to the third psalm, Glory, and repeat the antiphon.

You say the antiphon before the 1st of the 3 psalms in the office and then again after the 3rd psalm. You don’t say it before & after each psalm. How easy is that?

For daytime prayer, if there is only one antiphon given per hour which sometimes occurs during Advent, Lent, and Easter and the Office for the dead, the procedure is:
