Help me to learn to pray the LOTH

Your wife is fortunate. I, too, wanted a used LOTH but could not find one. I wanted a set that had been baked and frozen in the car, prayed into and maybe been moistened with a few tears. Nobody had one (though I have a Pius X Breviarium Romanum). It really is interesting to see those old holy cards tucked in the pages . . . They tell a lifetime story.

I have a new LOTH but my *Christian Prayer *came out of a Franciscan retirement home. It belonged to a Sister who had prayed it and frayed it!

I’m usually sloppy with books in general but I take extra care not to fray, fold, or even write or mark by 4-volume. I spent 129 USD on it, and I earn in Philippine pesos, so it’s quite an investment.

You are prudent to take great care with it. My “frayed” CP was used by a Sister, who had had it for about 30 years, in use several times a day. The ribbons are all shot and some of the pages are wrinkled. I have breviaries that must have been used by priests for 50 years that are worn but not abused. But the ribbons go. I am very careful with my books (leather bound – keep them in covers) and have been praying the Office for only 6 years, but my ribbons are starting to get a little skunky.

Now my old Book of Common Prayer – the one I used for the daily office for 20 years when I was an Episcopalian – is really a mess. But that thing had an adventurous life: purse, brief case, pocket (it’s small), baking in the car in summer and freezing in winter. It was rained on and wept into. Such is the life of an Office Book that is fulfillng its vocation.

This is true. And do yourself the favor of buying a replacement that has extra ribbons.

The 4 volume set has enough ribbons that you can mark off all the proper prayers for the season, plus the canticle of Zacharia and Mary.

However, I could use one more ribbon to mark the proper of the saints.

I keep two holy cards in the proper of saints – on days when the proper comes from two places (e.g., holy men/who worked with the poor), you need two.

I made a card with the Benedictus es on one side and the Magnificat on the other – but you memorize those pretty fast, so that card just sits under the flap of the cover . . .

I also leave a card in Ordinary (just in case . . . ). So I have one ribbon in the Proper of Seasons, one in the Psalter, one in the Complementary Psalmody for Daytime Prayer, one in Compline and the 5th in the Proper of Saints.

Ah. These major issues in our little lives. Speaking of which, it’s 3:20 here, I need to pray None.

Didn’t your set come with three inserts that have the Gospel Canticles, Invitatory and Te Deum printed on ita? Mine also came with an insert for Sunday Week I psalms (which are often used on feast days) amd a third one with commementary invitatory psalms.

Those are actually quite fragile. I rarely use them, yet they are becoming worn.

I only mark in them to correct typos. I’m sure you’ve noticed there are a number of them in the 4 vol set.

Yes, I’ve noticed, but not too bad. The one-volume Christian Prayer has them worse (duplicate antiphons!), and the large-print Christian Prayer has it really bad (your injustice is like God’s mountain…).

@porthos11 – My apologies for resurrecting this old thread. I’m new to the forums, and I need some help. I presume you’re Filipino. Just in case you do have a copy of the Supplement to the LOTH for Use in the Dioceses of the Philippines, please tell me where I can get a copy. I’ve been looking all around for it for nearly half a year already.
