It is VERY anti Catholic to not see a problem with childless people not being eligible to receive assistance while a non working parent does. Anyone can improve their position in life, including parents…
I’m almost taken aback by the animosity and anger in this and the rest of this post. I’m sorry, but no, it is not anti-Catholic at all. To be against charity would be anti-Catholic. But I don’t believe the *government *should be redistributing wealth.

You have made many sweeping statements and assumptions about me, about stay at home mothers. You’ve made some ugly comments about entire classes of people–‘most’ stay at home mothers are lazy and in miserable situations? Having babies is something even animals do? (But we’re talking about raising children, not merely giving birth.) It seems to me you’re very hurt about not finding a spouse, and maybe it’s become resentment against those who have what you wanted so badly?

((((TeachCatechism))) You are in my prayers.

Thank you for saying this for all of us SAHMs.

TeachCatechism, I’m giving you a big hug right now. And if we were neighbors or went to the same parish, I’d love to stop for a minute and chat. Or have a cup of coffee with you. These threads can be so sticky, and sometimes it’s easy to get lost in them. That’s the bad thing about the internet. :hug3:
I feel the same. I don’t agree with TeachCatholic, but ppl are all ganging up against her.

I hope God blesses you with a spouse soon, TeachCatholic.

I don’t want to pay for any of that. This couple is having kids they can’t support which makes them no different than the teen moms.
Respectfully submitted, if you are on or approaching Social Security, I don’t want to pay for your medical bills that you cannot afford off SS. Now that is the biggest handout going and a Ponzi scheme to boot!

So letting childless die is fine but supporting a dead weight who refuses to work is fine? Sorry but either help everyone or no one. I would rather support someone who fell on hard times than someone who makes it harder. Anyone using assistance would be redistributing the wealth, and everyone should have the same value whether they are parents or not.

I never wanted to be a stay at home mom, ever. So nope not jealous of stay at home moms. However, they should be supported by their husband, not me. Having kids doesn’t mean anything, yes anyone could do it.

Really? What about all of the SAHMs she has insulted? Should we all just ignore what she said and circle around her and sing Kumbyah? People shouldn’t put comments out there if they aren’t willing to back them up.

This is a long thread. I hope you have a chance to read all of it. But TC has not only insulted the OP’s daughter but has taken this opportunity to lash out at many vocational parents.
This thread is off track and is effectively useless now. I honestly see a ton of pain dripping from TC’s posts and lots of bitterness. And I honestly feel for her. She obviously has some issues and a lot going on. Her previous threads are very heartrending. But she has chosen to attack out of pain and a feeling of unfairness and say some pretty anti Catholic and uncharitable things. Not only that but by taking the screenname she does she does herself a disservice. I agree with 1ke and have recently stayed in the fray because this is not the stated purpose of this thread. But it is all about her now. And the OP is long gone, and I’m sure has a warped view of what we should be doing on this website.

Why, because I refuse to put sahm on a pedestal? I refuse to put anyone on a pedestal and just because someone is a parent doesn’t mean they are more deserving of help. I stand by the fact that the op’s daughter should get a job, even a part time job to help the support her kids. It’s one thing to be a sahm when one can afford it, another completely different when depending of assistance. In fact I see no difference between a married woman who pops out babies she can’t afford versus a single mom except that the first is married.

I know. Hence why I said I disagreed with her statements. She was insulting to SAHMs and implied that they all had messy homes etc. If I were ever lucky enough to have kids, I would like to be a SAHM until my kids went to school. So believe you me I am on the SAHMs side. I actually spend a lot of time IRL defending SAHMs. I just feel that some of the comments towards her were just as wrong as her own comments, i.e. the inference that she wasn’t “able” to get a man were kind of nasty.

I have indeed read the full thread though. Been reading it over the last few days. Hope the OP shows up soon, as I had some insights I would have liked to share with him.

I’m arrogant because I will never have kids yet am forced to support people who have kids they can’t support. That’s not fair to me. I don’t want to support PP or corporations either.
Who is going to pay for your Medicare and SS when you retire? Oh yeah, the younger generation. 😉

If moms spend more time cleaning and cooking and all the things they supposedly never do, or at least don’t do often enough, when are they supposed to RAISE THEIR CHILDREN???

You can say they spend all their time on the internet, but do you honestly believe that they are on the internet during a time that their kids need attention? I’m sure some do, but not the majority as you state. You say they are upper middle class women. If that is true than why don’t they pay for help? Why would they be trapped in a bad marriage? Most upper class women I have met do have degrees because the met their husband in college. Most men with degrees and professions don’t marry women without education.

This is going no where. I’m done. Heading to Adoration for an hour and giving all this to Jesus.

And just to be clear–my older kids are with big brother this weekend visiting him. All will be home tomorrow for Palm Sunday. I’m so excited my big boy will be home until after Easter! It will be so nice having all the kids together again. My husband is away at training so it is just me and the baby at home until tomorrow. My house is clean, no dishes to wash, no laundry to put away, and for once I get to spend a day relaxing. No, I usually don’t get to be on the internet, sometimes for weeks at a time. Sometimes for a few minutes here or there. Just letting everyone know I haven’t been neglecting my litter of puppies all day in my messy disgusting house. Some of us lazy stay at home moms actually do think raising good citizens is important.
God bless you. You admire you more than you know.

I only started attacking them when they started on me. I stated that I believe the OP’s daughter should get a job and I believe that. Way too many people believe that sahm is the best choice for kids, even if it means relying on welfare. I don’t, in fact I believe that while sahm is a choice when it comes to welfare it’s not. If the op never stated his daughter was on assistance I never would have brought up her staying at home. I couldn’t care less about that. I don’t think sahm is a better choice than working moms, just an alternative. I didn’t say all sahm have messy houses, I said that if someone is at home I see no reason they have to have a messy house. Not all but certainly a huge percentage of the sahm I know don’t work hard and yes they have messy houses because they are lazy. Yes, working people often have messy houses too, but they aren’t put on a pedestal. I definitely feel working is the better choice if there is welfare reliance. Many years ago my mom was a sahm and when my dad lost his job she went back to work. She could have applied for welfare and medical for me and my brother but she was too proud. She did what she had to do.

The comments about me not getting a man from those posters were stupid and this whole idea that I am jealous of sahm is not true. I’m not jealous, I never desired that. In fact I know several men who were looking for that and would have married me if I was interested. I wasn’t, which is why I didn’t date them. I never depended on a man for money and contrary to what many of them think I have never had a shortage of men wanting to date me. However, I am not interested in many of the men I meet.

Thank you for saying this for all of us SAHMs.
Makes me wonder what our dear Virgin Mary would say about trashing her vocation. And being a SAHM is a beautiful and sacrificial vocation. TC, your feelings are of this world.

Who is going to pay for your Medicare and SS when you retire? Oh yeah, the younger generation. 😉
Um me, but nice try. I’ve been paying taxes since I was 16. Besides, I’m not sure social security will be around. Everyone assume these kids will be paying taxes but many will not. So even if they are paying for me, I’ll still be paying for the ones who become a strain on the welfare system or end up in prison.

You are exaggerating and twisting, among other things. I know people who work in hospitals, and they’re actually obligated to care for people. By law. This has nothing to do with your hyperbole of ‘letting childless die.’ And to suggest that a mother raising her children ‘refuses to work’ is simply wrong. They clearly are working, raising the next generation.
Really? What about all of the SAHMs she has insulted? Should we all just ignore what she said and circle around her and sing Kumbyah? People shouldn’t put comments out there if they aren’t willing to back them up.
I agree. I think people have simply responded to her statements. I don’t think there has been anything cruel about the responses. I think even the comments about why she’s not finding a husband were absolutely not intended with cruelty, but to point out to her that the bitterness and anger that are so evident here are likely affecting the decisions of those in her life, too.
Why, because I refuse to put sahm on a pedestal? I refuse to put anyone on a pedestal …

a married woman who pops out babies she can’t afford versus a single mom except that the first is married.
You are again engaging in hyperbole and strawmen. Nobody asked you or anyone to put mothers on a pedestal.

As for your comment about popping out babies, that is vulgar and rude, and such a phrase, frankly, is disgusting from anyone, but particularly one who claims to be Catholic and be so perfectly, devoutly Catholic, no less, than she can’t even tolerate the thought of marrying a man who’s been married before. Do you realize that if you want that perfect, devout Catholic man, he is more likely than other men to be appalled by your attitude toward mothers and your vulgar use of phrases like ‘popping out children’ to describe the birth of a child created by God, born within a sacramental marriage ordained by God?

Do you regard Mary as ‘popping out a child?’ By your ideas about poverty, she had no business saying yes to the Holy Spirit and God, in fact. They were poor, too.

I also find it a little odd that someone who is far too devout to marry a divorced man can’t see any difference between a married woman getting pregnant as a result of sacramental sex within sacramental marriage, and a single woman who should not, by Catholic teaching, have been having sex in the first place.

You have not bothered to answer the question of what a married woman is meant to do: stop having sex altogether? Abort the baby if she gets pregnant despite NFP? People DO get pregnant despite any and all use of birth control. What is your suggestion?

No working outside of the home is not the same thing but nice try. Many of these sahm don’t do much because their kids are in school. Many of them are lazy, otherwise they wouldn’t be spending hours online and having a messy house like a friend of mine. I never stated all of them but there are plenty like this.

Actually they were intended to be cruel because some of you think because you have kids you are special. You’re not. The comments were pure evil and I’m saddened so many are teaching their kids to hate others. I don’t hate sahm, I just don’t think they are any better than anyone else and I don’t feel all are actually doing a good job.

Mary wasn’t on welfare and having multiple kids. There is no difference between mothers when they are on welfare. Sure, mistakes happen and pregnancy happens but then the couple works together to support those kids, whether it’s someone getting a second job or both people working or doing what they can. Simply saying they’ll go on assistance is showing lack of responsibility. I know plenty of large families but not one is on assistance.

Sorry but men I date are devout and do see a problem with people having kids they can’t afford. Men I date aren’t interested in having a sahm otherwise they wouldn’t date me. I have no attitude towards mothers, but towards those who use having a kid as an excuse to be lazy. I know plenty of hard working parents, but being a sahm doesn’t mean someone isn’t lazy. My friend certainly was, and her husband left her.

FordDad,
I am so sorry for what has happened to your thread. This is a poor example of Catholic thought and behavior here. I am sorry for the insults that have been repeatedly leveled at your daughter. I suspect that the anonymity of the internet has given some people here a false sense of security, a wall behind which they may hide as they direct their judgements against your daughter. All the while, they forget that even anonymously, we are expected to give Christian witness. I see many people here, though, defending you and your daughter against the insults, and reminding the others of the pro-life values we cherish. We are not merely pro-birth, we are truly pro-life. Unfortunately, sometimes politics and greed warps the conscience in these matters.
I don’t know if you are still reading this miserable excuse for an advice thread, but just in case you are, I just wanted to apologize for the tone it has taken in the past couple of days. For Catholics, our catechism teaches us to charitably assume the best about other’s intentions, unless and until we have evidence to the contrary. Also, if correction of a person is needed, we are taught to handle it charitably, with an eye toward repentance and reconciliation, and not level insults or engage in name-calling. So, there has been some extremely unChristlike behavior in this thread, and it is a poor witness for our faith. I am sorry and I hope you will not judge the Catholic Church by the behavior you have seen in this thread. God bless you and your family.

I agree, mommamaree. I had some insights from my devout Catholic mother of five who used NFP all her life. She had some great advice I wanted to give to the OP. Sigh…
