Thank you for reading. I attended Mass for the first time this morning and had a reaction that was completely out of my character. Some background first: I am a non-Catholic, having been raised Christian but also having no involvement in any religious activities since I was young. I have always believed in God, but religion in general has not been a major part of my life. I am now 28 and in a relationship with a Catholic girl. I know little of Catholicism, but I decided to attend Mass to provide some perspective that would allow me to relate better with her on a religious basis. I have considered RCIA, so attending Mass was also a way to determine if I feel compatible. I attended the full service at a Church that was closest to me. I sat in the back, and even before the service began, I felt really strange. I was literally on the verge of tears through the entire service, and had to bite my lip and focus on banal subjects to prevent any external display. There was nothing on my mind. It would come and go a bit, but it was present more often than not, and there were no apparent triggers. My heart felt heavy and i was perspiring a bit. This kind of emotion is so unlike me that I am at a loss to explain why it happened. I am a young guy and it is rare indeed that anything could evoke a emotional response in me. It was such a strange feeling, I can’t attribute it to panic, guilt, or anything else with any certainty. Have any you had similar experiences? What did you think happened? I am really confused!

I had a similar experience. I was in my early 20s when I attended my first Mass. Like you I was a non-Catholic dating a Catholic. It was a very powerful emotional experience. When I later learned a bit about Catholic teaching, I attributed the feeling to being drawn by the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. I have been a Catholic for 30 years and I still sense something beyond the natural when I attend Mass.

I also found out later that not everyone has this sort of experience. I have come to see it as a gift from God to strengthen my faith (which certainly needs it 🙂 ).

The Glory of God written on your heart which now feels drawn to the True Church the One Church. Your heart has been searching whether you have or not your heart has. Now led by the Holy Spirit… heed the Call and come Home Brother.

God Bless,

Paul… ( and go sign up ) 😃

Holy Spirit I praise and thank You for so deeply touching Markovian’s being.
Remember this grace when things are hard. It is a gift for now, and for the times when you may struggle.
Thank You beloved God for this gift. Hear what the Holy Spirit is saying to you by this grace. 🙂

“This…is what I pray before the Father from whom every family, whether spiritual or natural, takes its name: Out of His infinite glory, may He give you the power through His Spirit for your hidden self to grow strong, so that Christ may live in your hearts through faith, and then, planted in love and built on love, you will with all the saints have strength to grasp the breadth and the length, the height and the depth; until, knowing the love of Christ, which is beyond all knowledge, you are filled with the utter fullness of God.”
“Glory be to Him whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine; glory be to Him from generation to generation in the Church and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen.”

And welcome to CAF!

There is a longing in us to find where we can be in communion with God…when we listen, the Holy Spirit speaks to us…he did to me…

Come to your Home, the Catholic Church

What a grace you have received.

Yes, come Home, we’d love to have you!

I am a Cradle Catholic and had a similar experience when I attended a Tridentine/Latin/ Extraordinary Form Mass not too long ago.

Thank you for sharing this with us. 🙂

I would suggest a couple of things. First, just to eliminate it or not, see a doctor and get a physical. It maybe a physical issue, and if its not, then you will know for sure that it wasnt an issue.

Then, well probably firstly, pray about it. Did you feel conviction, or condemnation? The former is from the Holy Spirit the other from the devil. Were you humbled or oppressed? Again, there is a difference. Its proper to feel very small in the presence of God.

For myself, I feel a battle when I attend Mass. I very much want to be there, know that I need to be there but, I also feel distractions that are not helpful and are probably just a way for evil to miss out on the Mass and divert my attention elsewhere.

With what I read, I think that you got a real welcome that you didnt expect. 👍

I always cried during Mass when I went with my fiancé (who passed away last year). I think it was the combination of feeling so incredibly loved in both the spiritual (God) and earthly (my fiancé) senses.

Now I only cry if something in the homily or readings specifically touches me.

Yes, I came from atheism to Catholicism. It has happened a few times to me, usually when I least expect it. Once I left Mass early because it was just too much for me to take, ie, I ceased to be a normal functioning adult.

God’s love at time pierces our hearts. That is what it feels like to me.

Hi and Welcome!!
Scary isn’t it? You were finally in the place where your soul was at peace, where your soul was at home and belongs. For the first time in your life you were in the actual presence of God. I’ve been a Catholic all my life, and it still happens to me more times than not, after I’ve gone to Communion and kneel back at my pew, little nothing me being so overwhelmed to have Jesus actually touching me, and become one w/ me is an incredible feeling.
You have been so blessed, not too many things nowadays can invoke that strong of a feeling, and so many people never feel it.
I think what you were feeling was God calling you to Him.

Yes Markovian, it was God gift of actual grace drawing you to him at that time.
God is always standing close by all his children with his actual grace waiting for the time we are ready to accept his Son through his gift of grace in faith and love.🙂
Peace, Carlan

Its not unheard off, it is because Christ is truly present in the tabernacle, body, blood, soul and divinity, that is the difference.

Remember this experience. Treasure it in your heart.

There will be times in your life when you feel less connected, when other things are uppermost in your mind, when doubts might creep in. At those times, remember the grace which you received this day.

Can you describe in more detail what this rush of emotion was like? All I am getting from you was that it was “strange.” Good strange? Bad strange? Different strange?

Welcome to the Catholic church. What parish in Seattle did you attend? I normally go to St. Alphonsus and attend the North American Martyr’s FSSP parish. This Sunday was a High Mass for the Assumption.

Hope to be up to Seattle next weekend.

It happens to many of us, I almost cried today at the Asperges Me, not sure why, but it was a strong emotion. When I came back to the Church after 2/12 years I went to confession, and boy I tell you I could not stop crying, the priest had to tell me that it’s situations like mine that makes him sure he is doing God’s will.

Welcome, Markovian. 🙂 Yeah, you’ve been given a gift. St. John Vianney once said that, “If we really understood the Mass, we would die of joy.” But you know the really amazing thing about your story is that nothing was pulling your emotional strings–you haven’t a whole lot of knowledge or experience with holy Mass. Furthermore, the Mass isn’t usually where one finds a great of displays of emotions–it’s usually very quiet there.

Here’s a beautiful little book that was written by Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, called
Calvary and the Mass. I hope it’ll help you to find out a little more about the most beautiful place this side of heaven, the Holy Mass.

Its an awesome feeling isn’t it. I still get real emotional at mass after 40 + years as a Catholic. I went to a new church yesterday and it was an old style cathedral church the mass was so beautiful and the atmosphere was Holy…I really had to contain myself.

As the book of proverbs says, the Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. First of all, congratulations on attending Mass and being open to this. There are lots of people in today’s world who would’ve said ‘this feels creepy’ and run away. God will bless you for staying and working through this.

Sounds a little like my own conversion experience, only more intense. For me, I’d already been a practicing Protestant, and was dating a Catholic girl. I saw the Catholic Church as as good a church as any, so decided to convert. I’d been to a few masses, and had started praying the rosary already (Can I just recommend the rosary to you - once you learn it, it can be a fantastic way of contemplating Jesus). For me, the experience came on Corpus Christi 2007 - at the feast of Corpus Christi (the body of Christ) the priest takes the host (the Eucharistic bread, transformed into the body and blood of Christ) in a display case called a monstrance and processes around the church for all to see. As the priest was approaching me, it hit me, this really is Jesus, Jesus Christ, the same Jesus I’d been trying to worship as a Protestant, was really present under the appearance of bread. I just wanted to fall on my face and say sorry to God for taking so long to recognise Him.

That’s why the Mass is so special - in the Mass, Jesus Christ is truly present, in His body, blood, soul and divinity. Only the appearances of bread and wine remain. Any time you walk into a Catholic Church, you will see a tabernacle (a little box on top of the altar) with a light burning next to it - that means Jesus is present, under the appearance of bread, inside the tabernacle. If you already have some background in Christianity, I would recommend a book called ‘The Lamb’s Supper’ by Scott Hahn, in it he explains what the Mass is all about.

It sounds to me like you need some time to think through what’s just happened to you. Can I suggest just going into an empty Catholic Church and sitting with Jesus in the tabernacle (obviously, you sitting in the pews, Him sitting in the tabernacle, not you sitting in the tabernacle with Him, that might be a bit cramped :p), just ask Him what happened at that Mass, and work your way through it. A great saint, the Cure of Ars, once saw a man who used to sit in his church, what he thought about when he prayed, the man replied simply, ‘I look at Him, and He looks at me’ - that’s a pretty good description of contemplative prayer.

Also, talk to your girlfriend about it - it might be that this will help her deepen her own faith. And talk to a priest, especially if you’re serious about starting RCIA.

When I explained what I’d experienced to a priest later on in my RCIA experience, he said that I’d received the gift of faith that day - faith is a gift. Some people pray for it, for others it just happens. It sounds to me like you’ve been given that gift. Praise God! Alleluia.

PS - Sometimes, I still cry at Mass.
