Yes, Anne is my fave between those two. Although I really do like Jane, too, we cannot use that name.

I want to give several options to my husband for him to choose from, though.
Grace is a pretty name…

Hey, how about Christine? It sounds good with Theodora and it has Christ’s name in it!

Mary or Marie is always a safe bet.
Can’t go wrong with the Mother of Jesus for a patroness. 👍
Beyond that, of course I’ll say Clare. 😃
Clare

This is just a personal quirk but I suggest avoiding what I call “filler” middle names and that list includes Lynn. Anne is okay but Ann is not. Also on the list: Marie, Jo, Lee (Leigh is kind of okay). I know the middle names of a lot of people and among women these names are ubiquitous. Let’s give them a rest. There are a lot of options out there so let’s use them. 👍

Now, if any of those is a “family name” passed down from a previous generation or the name of a friend or someone you want to honor, that makes it okay to use (in my mind :whacky:)

Yes, Marie is a saint’s name, as it Ann but many times Mary would work as well as Marie. There are also more saints than just Ann and Marie so plenty of variety.

And I love Theodora Rose. ❤️ And Theodore Jude! Each name clicks with the other well.
How rude. I have what you refer to as a filler name for my middle. In fact, mine is one that you listed.:p:D
Just being silly, I am not actually mad. Everyone has their preferences.

Edited to add: also, you do realize you said to avoid Marie, when my user name is Maree?? Hilarious.😉

I am glad you like Theodora Rose. That is my favorite. 👍

Since your boy name is Teddy Jude, how about Teddie Jade for a girl?
That is what my daughter wants to pick. She has offered Hazel and Jade. Can you tell she is a free-spirited, artistic girl?😛

Ok, I have a question:
lots of times, my friends say "we’re going to name the baby BLANK…and we’ll call her BLANK…

Why not just go with the intended name in the first place? If you’re concerned about Saint names, make sure the 2nd name is a full blown Saint name.
As someone who worked in the Catholic schools for a long time, it causes all kinds of problems, from registrations, certificates, report cards, tests, references, etc. when people have to list all their “aliases”. Much paperwork doesn’t allow for that. So you get your new class roster, and some boy is in your class named “Armstrong” and he gets embarrassed and says “My name is MAC!”
Kids get really embarrassed and harassed when they have an assortment of names. Not saying it’s right, but people with names other than what they given at birth seem to have a sore spot about it. I had women friends who say Oh, my real name is Dorothy but I HATE my name. My family has always called me Dolly. And then get upset if you happen to find out their real name. How can the rest of the world know what they should be called when their names are printed out as something else on every legal document?

I don’t mean to be wet blanket, but I wonder if just Teddy would be nice? I love it!
Having said that, we have a family in the parish that just had their 9th child. Theodore. He’s adorable. And everyone calls him Theodore. Theodora is lovely too.

I hope find something that’s a good fit for your family. Congratulations on the baby!
I just wanted to let you know how some kids I’ve encountered have felt. I hope I don’t’ offend, if so, I’m sorry. :o
God bless.

Do you consider the meanings of names when you pick them? I’m curious if others do, too. To me it is an important part of the naming process. (I got my first baby name book when I was 12 so I might be a little different in that way.)

Am i the only one trying out a bunch of names by mentally yelling them like the kid is already in trouble for something? Just wonderin’ 🙂

Also, I like Grace and Rose. They do go with Theodora. Plus, this is the Year of Grace!

MJJean, I do that too. 😃

Bruised Reed, yep, my husband and I do consider name meanings. Sometimes it’s even been the deciding factor.

Mommamaree, I like many of those suggested, but if you’re like me, you’ll want a lot of various options before deciding. 😃 So you might find more ideas on Nymbler. It takes the names you like and offers similar suggestions. I have loved looking through it for ideas (our baby #7 is due in August).

HTH!

Interesting post. 🙂

I have known a Kim that wasn’t Kimberly, a Becky that wasn’t Rebecca and my favorite, a Deacon whose given name is Lawrence but his grandmother announced that he was going to be called Jake. He was, and I decided if I ever had a boy I was going to name him Thaddeus or Elias (plus a family oriented middle name) but call him Jake. 😃 I also know someone who was given a nickname before he was born and it stuck. He was called that through high school but changed to his given name as an adult. I’m kind of sad about that. (I loved his nickname but if you google the nickname and his last name a lot of Arabic stuff comes up which is weird. The nickname and last name are Norse and Italian so how it turns Arabic I don’t know.)

I have a name with many diminutives and if the nickname my parents chose was my given name I would have been disappointed. I think it sounds choppy with my last name so when I was about 23 I started using my real name. People still want to call me by a diminutive and they always pick the wrong one. I do have a preference but I like that I had some choices.

Just a different perspective.

Yes, we do. All of our previous children have one unique name and one family name (borrowed from our grandparents). Well, we have run out of grandparents now, and we have regularly used religious/saint/traditional names, which is how we settled on Theodore.

Oh and someone asked about nicknames and paperwork. It is also a generational tradition to have a longer, traditional first name, which gets shortened to a nickname, ending in “ie” or “y”. It is just what we do!🤷

If I were blessed with a daughter ,
then the name Olivia would need to be in there somewhere

My daughters’ middle names are Grace, Joy and Hope but not necessarily in English. All of their first names are Marian names, and their middle names have been chosen for their meaning and sometimes the English version didn’t sound good with the first name so we chose the Spanish version instead. If the next little one is a girl her middle name will be Faith or the Spanish version. We haven’t picked which Marian name to give yet. Maybe one of those can help you out?

I have a filler middle name. Four out of my nine female cousins have that same middle name, three more have another one. Not even going to start counting friends with filler names.

And Maree isn’t Marie. No, really. So, according to kind of subjective OCD-esque rules (that I think only make sense to me 🤓) Theodora Maree is totally okay but Theodora Marie is not. Unless Marie is the first name (not middle name 'cuz no copying of filler names :tsktsk:) of a family member for beloved friend.

The forum is really jacked up tonight. 😦

Yeah, I don’t know what is going on with the forum display. It keeps jumping around.

I like your analysis of the names and spellings. I am a big fan of using an slightly less common spelling for names, especially if it is already in use, but maybe spelled differently due to language or cultural differences. That is kind of fun. And it is why my forum name is spelled a bit differently, too.

Why can’t you keep her middle name as Jude, too?
I love that name! I have a girlfriend whose first name is Jude…I think it’s gorgeous. It’s not just a boy’s name.

.
yes! I went to grade school with a girl named Jude. She came from a huge hispanic family that tired of the Mary names for girls and the Joseph names for boys. So they switched it up!
All the boys were M’s (Mark, Mario, Michael) and the girls were J’s: Jacinta, Jaqueline, Judith, Jude, Johnina, Joanetta, Jody, Joni.

She was nice girl, that Jude. We called her “judy”.

We have used our childrens’ middle names as a way of honoring family members, or in one case, a spiritual family member. Our childrens’ middle names come from the following:
  • My wife’s grandfather’s first name
  • The first name of a beloved pope who was recently declared a saint
  • My grandfather’s first name
  • My father’s first name
So you could think about whether there is a grandmother or other family member who you would like to honor by using her name as your child’s middle name.

Yes, we like this tradition and we already did this with all of our other children. Unfortunately, because of name reuse and coincidental same names between family trees, and the fact that our siblings followed suit with this tradition once they started having children, we have run out of names! Hence our current trouble.😛
