Help with debating a Mormon

The theory for Mormons is that the senior apostle presides over the Church (aka becomes the President). So, in this theory, John would become the “Pope” before Linus, because John had more authority as an apostle. Therefore, for them, the church of Rome having primacy is irrelevant.
OK. Thank you for your answer. Peter was given the keys and John was not, although all the Apostles were given the authority by Jesus to “bind and loose”. When Linus replaced
Peter, all knew John was alive but was held prisoner. Therefore even though John was the last Apostle, he could not be in Rome to steer the Church, and at the time the Church at Rome was preeminent because of Peter.

Linus was elected to replace Peter. The keys and authority were then given to Linus and so continued the transfer down through the ages. Since Linus replaced Peter, he was also considered an Apostle ( senior or not ).

We don’t know when most of the Apostles died. John wrote Revelations, historians have placed the writing of Revelation around 90AD so John must have been alive then. The Gospel of Matthew was written between 70 and 90AD. Peter was martyred around 64AD. Why do Mormons believe John should have been the next Pope if Matthew and others were still alive?
Mormonism invented their own way to select their leader, it is contrary to the way the ancient church selected their leader, so to a Mormon the ancient church must be wrong.
This way of thinking is also their only proof of the Great Apostasy. Mormonism doesn’t agree with the beliefs of ancient Christianity, so there must have been an Apostasy.
Unique Catholic beliefs can be traced to the teachings of Christ; Mormonism can’t say that. The Catholic Church contains all we need for salvation as given to us by Christ.

I love how you always try to turn the topic to Catholicism. Do you have statistics to back up your own claims? Now, I would definitely imagine that many if not most converts to Pentecostalism in Latin America would be former Catholics, since the Catholic population is so large there! It’s like saying “In India, most of the converts to Catholicism are former Hindus”. :whacky:
There you go, wanting facts again.

Haven’t you learned anything?..lol 😃

I don’t see any evidence that the lds church is all made up. If you have substantial proof, please call the major newspapers and report the potential story.
Have you read the book by Grant Palmer? Was an LDS Institute teacher (or head–can’t remember which right now) and he’s still one of your own even though he admits that it was all made up. I believe the book was called “An Insiders View of Mormon Origins” or something like that.

Arandur,
Those articles I recently cited showed quite a different process of the “apostolic succession” involving “keys given to Peter” in the early days of the church than has been presented to me by some Catholics on this website, and I think they were being sincere which means that they have a significant misunderstanding.
How is the process of apostolic succession that has been described on this website different from the Catholic Encyclopedia article? Are you also referring to the article written by a member of a Restorationist church as well?

Thank you, I will. In the mean time, you might like to consider reading this Articles of Faith of the LDS Church:
How come you’re leaving out all the good stuff that LDS folks are taught?
You know, all these incipid ramblings? (maybe you’re new to LDS and they haven’t laid all that on you…yet).

*]We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.
**–And that’s one of the primary reasons mormonism is a full-fledged cult, created by a con man who dreamt-up stories; faked the translation of the book of Abraham; cut and pasted from the Bible (the only word of God) and played the role of fake prophet with a capital “F”. **

Please think about it.

I skimmed that site. I didn’t see anything inconsistent with what is usually explained on CAF for apostolic succession. Yes, Peter had the keys, in a manner unique to him and his office. That’s why we call it the Petrine office. The links you provided draw heavily on the Scriptures in the context of their times and are borne out through early history and Tradition. That’s pretty strong evidence for the way God intended to do things.
The CC can choose whatever process it wants to for the succession of the Papacy.
No it can’t. It can only do things that don’t violate those truths that Christ established.
I assume your use of the term “salvation” in your question about “essential revelation” means “saved to be where God is, eternally”. (LDS often use that meaning also, or use the term “exaltation” and differentiate about the term “salvation”).
Not sure I understand your differentiation.
I meant that most Christians believe there are typically a certain number of things that we must know/follow in order to be meeting the basic requirements for salvation. Those that remain ignorant of these are not banned from heaven (they are left to God’s Mercy), but those that reject them or do not follow them once known endanger their souls.

Are there more “requirements” yet to be revealed, without which we cannot be saved?
For those seeking “exaltation”, there are things “yet to be revealed,” including scriptures that were revelations to prophets with some of the other tribes of Israel who were visited by Christ after His ascension, and revelations given to the brother of Jared…They will be “essential” for those for whom they are revealed, the timing of which is in God’s hands.
What is different about one time or place than another that would have those people judged by a different standard than us? Does God play favorites or “respect persons,” as you might put it?
They will involve hidden knowledge that we do not now have, and they will involve gaining greater faith.
“Hidden knowledge?” That’s a gnostic, occultist belief. It is not of God. Jesus did not come to be a “respecter of persons” and grant some special knowledge that was necessary for all and withhold that knowledge from others. He did give people roles and equip them with what they needed to do their part, and He did explain things in different ways to different audiences, but this was not because He was holding anything back that everyone needed to know or could benefit from.

Have a very good day.
We are evidently not reading the same information.

How do you see it as different?

Unfortunately, it is the lds that choose whatever process it wants to for succession of your leader.

There is nothing in scripture that says the keys have to be handed down to the most senior person. There is nothing in scripture that says the leader of Christ’s church on Earth has a 3 person “presidency”.

Good try though. Just another deflection of when you can’t support something of your own, turn it around.

Dear Mormons. If you would read the above comments with an open mind and heart you will see that the teachings of the LDS are false. Why would God hold back revelations from His people? He came once and for all. All that is necessary for salvation was given to His Church, no more revelations are necessary nor are desired. In fact, the claim that one can receive new revelations from God is an open door for false teachings. The complete truth was given 2,000 years ago. The warnings against “even an angel” bringing ANOTHER Gospel is clear in the bible and you should heed that warning.

In Mormonism, there is generally a difference between exaltation and salvation. All people in the Celestial, Terrestrial, and Telestial Kingdoms of Heaven are “saved”. There are thus different levels of salvation in Mormonism, though all are “saved”.

THE CELESTIAL GLORY. The Celestial Kingdom is reserved for those who receive a testimony of Jesus and fully embrace the gospel; that is, they have faith in Jesus Christ, repent of their sins, are baptized by immersion by one having authority, receive the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands, and endure in righteousness. All who attain this kingdom “shall dwell in the presence of God and his Christ forever and ever””

The Celestial Kingdom is in turn divided into three levels. The highest is what is called “Exaltation”. Exaltation is also referred to as “Eternal LIfe”. To be exalted, you also have to have received your Endowment, and have been Sealed to your spouse (eternally married). In exaltation, you become gods, and have Eternal Increase, becoming Eternal Parents just like the Father and the Heavenly Mother, and have spirit children after the resurrection. Those that live in the lower two levels of the Celestial Kingdom are single, and become ministering angels.

THE TERRESTRIAL GLORY. The inhabitants of the Terrestrial Kingdom are described as the honorable people of the earth who received a testimony of Jesus but were not sufficiently valiant in that testimony to obey all the principles and ordinances of the gospel (D&C 76:71-80). Also, those of “the heathen nations” who “died without law,” who are honorable but who do not accept the fulness of the gospel in the postearthly spirit world, are candidates for the terrestrial glory (D&C 45:54;76:72). In the hereafter, they receive the presence of the Son, but not the fulness of the Father.”

"THE TELESTIAL GLORY. Those who on earth are liars, sorcerers, whoremongers, and adulterers, who receive not the gospel, or the testimony of Jesus, or the prophets, go to the Telestial Kingdom. They are judged unworthy of being resurrected at the second coming of Christ and are given additional time in “hell” to repent and prepare themselves for a later resurrection and placement into a kingdom of lesser glory. During this period, they learn to abide by laws they once rejected. They bow the knee and confess their dependence on Jesus Christ, but they still do not receive the fulness of the gospel. At the end of the Millennium, they are brought out of hell and are resurrected to a telestial glory. There “they shall be servants of the Most High; but where God and Christ dwell they cannot come, worlds without end” (D&C 76:112). However, they do receive “of the Holy Spirit through the ministration of the terrestrial” (verse 86). "

So a portion of heaven is subdivided?

Man, going to one of the other two levels in Celestial would bite big time!!

Hi, welcome to heaven, and by the way, you’re flying coach, and in the middle seat of your row.

I know this is silly, but is there some sort of biblical reference for this? Where did this “revelation” come from?

The LDS heaven is a series of ghettos, where family members are separated from one another because they did not jump through certain Mormon hoops. “The family-centered church” breaks up families, both on earth and in heaven.

I’ll take the Christian heaven, where I can be with my whole family for eternity, in the presence of the entire Trinity.

Mormons refer to a few Biblical verses to support the claim. When we actually look at the verses in context, we see that they’re not talking about “degrees of glory” or levels of Heaven at all. Let’s look at the ones I’m aware of:

Many Mansions?

The Encyclopedia of Mormonism lists John 14:2 as a reference to the many mansions in Heaven, thus alluding to the Degrees of Glory. But does this make sense in the Degrees of Glory theology? I don’t think so. Let’s look at it:

John 14:2 KJV
In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

Now, let’s look at the surrounding verses:

John 14:1-3 KJV
1Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
2In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

So, yes, Catholics fully agree that there are many “mansions” (translated as “rooms” or “dwelling places” in other translations) in God’s house. But what about in the Telestial Kingdom? From the EOM article, we see that the Doctrine and Covenants says that, in reference to the Telestial Kingdom, “where God and Christ dwell they cannot come, world without end.” (D&C 76:112). Only those in the Terrestrial and Celestial Kingdoms have the presence of Christ, and only those in the Celestial Kingdom dwell in the presence of God and Christ forever.

But look at John 14:3! It tells us that Jesus will go to make a place for us, and that when He comes again, He will receive us unto Himself, so that where He is, we will be also. Clearly, this excludes the Telestial Kingdom, since “where God and Christ dwell, they cannot come”, but Jesus tells us in John 14:3 that He will take us to where He is. So, these “mansions” that are created are not separate from Jesus Christ, He will take us to where He is also. So if anything, the Telestial Kingdom is not one of the mansions being discussed here.

Celestial and Terrestrial Bodies?

This was brought up on another thread earlier, but I’ll review it again. Again, let’s look at the EOM entry. Mormons also reference 1 Corinthians 15:40-41 as referring to the Celestial and Terrestrial Kingdoms (the word “Telestial” is a Mormon word), and that the difference between the 3 kingdoms is like the difference between the Sun, Moon, and Stars. Let’s look at 1 Cor 15:40-41

1 Cor 15:40-41 KJV

40There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another.
41There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory.

Now, let’s look at those verses in context to see what they’re talking about:

1 Cor 15:35-45

35But some man will say, How are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come?
36Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not quickened, except it die:
37And that which thou sowest, thou sowest not that body that shall be, but bare grain, it may chance of wheat, or of some other grain:
38But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him, and to every seed his own body.
39All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds.
40There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another.
41There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory.
42So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption:
43It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power:
44It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.
45And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.

What is the passage talking about in context? The resurrection of the body, and how our bodies are different after the Resurrection. Some ask, how are the dead raised up, and what body do they come? The passage then goes on to explain the difference between the flesh of men, the flesh of beast, fish, and birds. There is a difference between celestial and terrestrial bodies. There is a difference in the glory of the sun, moon, and stars. Then we step into verse 42. Just like in those differences that were discussed prior to verse 42, there is a difference between our bodies now and our bodies in the resurrection. Our bodies are sown in dishonor, but they will be raised in glory. We have a natural body right now, and it will be raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there’s a spiritual body. 35-45 is an extended analogy. The difference between our resurrected and our current bodies is like the differences mentioned prior to verse 42. They are both bodies, but they are different. Similarly, all living things have flesh, but the flesh of man is different from that of beasts, fish, and birds. The Sun, Moon, and Stars are all astronomical “balls”, but they are different in how bright they are. Clearly, in context, verses 40-41 have nothing to do with levels of Heaven, but are part of an analogy on the difference between our current bodies and our resurrected ones.

Mormons of course have “latter-day revelation” on this issue, however I see no Biblical support for 3 degrees of Heaven.

(Hmm, new blog entry? 👍)

Amen to that one.

So let’s say you’re a good mo, and you jump through all the hoops, sealed marriage, and the whole bit. But your spouse doesn’t. Your spose can’t join you?

Also, does the man have to bring the woman through the veil, or can she do it herself?Assuming she passes first. What if somebody forgets the secret handshake, and special name? Do they get booted?

Agreed. And the Mormon “eternal families” doesn’t work on another level: Let’s say that I’m sealed to my wife and 3 children. Suppose we’re all faithful to our covenants, and are all exalted. We’ll be together forever! But, my wife and I will be exalted, and we’ll be Heavenly Parents, having spirit children for our world. But then, my son will be off with his wife (who was also sealed to her own family for eternity), who will have their own spirit children to have for their own world, and so will my daughter with her husband (who also was sealed to his parents and brother). And remember, they were also sealed as family units to their own families. And let’s not forget about my other son, who was sealed to his wife, who then died. He then gets married again, and is sealed to his second wife (no sealing clearance or cancellation needed). So, echoing back to polygamy, he’ll have two wives in the CK, and of course those wives are also sealed to their own families, and the children from both wives are also in their own “worlds” literally. So in reality, this eternal family unit concept doesn’t actually work out.

Amen to that one.

So let’s say you’re a good mo, and you jump through all the hoops, sealed marriage, and the whole bit. But your spouse doesn’t. Your spose can’t join you?
Both have to be faithful to the covenants made in the temple. If one spouse isn’t (let’s say she leaves the church), then she won’t be in the Celestial Kingdom (unless maybe she accepts it in spirit prison? not sure on that one). It’s more of a conditional sealing, where you have to remain faithful to the covenants.

I think I need a flow chart :whacky::whacky:.

At the very least, a bottle of asprin.

This information is astounding to me.

What percentage of mormons really understand this?

Is there any kind of statistic on how man men are mormon as opposed to women?

Amen to that one.

So let’s say you’re a good mo, and you jump through all the hoops, sealed marriage, and the whole bit. But your spouse doesn’t. Your spose can’t join you?
Correct, the Mormons have succeeded in breaking up the family - in essence putting asunder that which God has joined together.
Also, does the man have to bring the woman through the veil, or can she do it herself?Assuming she passes first. What if somebody forgets the secret handshake, and special name? Do they get booted?
A woman cannot take herself through the veil. She must be brought through by her husband, father or some other “priesthood holder”. But not to worry. If her husband is not worthy, she will be taken from him and given to another. Note that it does not say she will be able to choose another, but that she will be * given* to another. Women are still very much property in LDS doctrine and culture.

Not only will the woman be taken from her husband, but all her children and grandchildren will be taken from him as well and assigned to the new man. Congrats to the Mormons - they have broken up yet another family.

I think “the family-centered church” doesn’t really fit, does it? Maybe they should call it “the family-busting church”.

P.S.: As to the secret handshakes, passwords and secret names: in the endowment we are told we must not forget them as we will need them to pass by the angels that stand as sentinels [at the entrance to the celestial kingdom]. So a Mormon could forget them, but I wouldn’t advise it.

I wonder how many Mormon men with nagging, shrewish wives will conveniently forget the woman’s new name? A case of ignorance being bliss. 😃
