Help With The Venereble Archbishop Sheen

Not sure if this is the best place to post this request; moderators please move it where it belongs.

I have been feeling the urge to learn more about and read some of the works of the Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. I believe his work may help me be more affective in ministry. My problem is I have a very limited knowledge of him and his writings.

Can any of you help me figure out where to start? Thanks in advance!👍
 
depends what you want to know as he wrote about just about everything laughs

His autobiography is inspiaring it is called “Tresure in Clay” and his masterpiece is generally considered to be “Life of Christ”.
 
Hi - Amazon.com has a variety of Archbishop Sheen’s books available.

I’ve read “Treasure In Clay” - a terrific book!

There are several websites with great info. Try “googling” his name - you’ll get lots of great info and book reviews!

I just finished Archbishop Fulton Sheen’s St. Therese - A Treasured Love Story. I’ve been reading one essay per week during Adoration over the last year.

So I have read a few of his works, at least in part.

First thing I will say is they are quiet beautiful. And no, I am not just saying it for a lack of a superlative to use. Its just the way he paints a picture using examples of practical experiences and connects it to divine truths is truly amazing. He uses a lot of analogies and if you already have somewhat of a grounding in faith, this stuff is gold.

Its like he is writing a set of reflections which uses the faith as a tool of analysis and as you read it, you start to see the connections and feel this sense of appreciation.

At the same time, the weak point in his works is that it won’t convince someone not already in the faith to necessarily convert on the merits of the argument I feel (perhaps on the beautify of it).

Basically, if you are already Catholic and want to view/reflect and understand things from the eyes of faith, his works will make you smile 🙂

I also have his book on the life of Jesus but haven’t gotten around to reading it yet.

This is probably true. I have not read his works but I feel one weakness of the Church of his era was that She worked from the assumption that the USA and Europe were still Christian. Basically they were, culturally they were, but they weren’t really.
 
I also heartily recommend the “Life of Christ” but also if you can get them the “Life is Worth Living” series of books released during the run of the show. I guess one could call them episode transcripts. B/c of they came out in the 50s, they’re very hard to get but they provided me a good nightly set of readings.

I was a teen-ager when I started reading his books, and always looked for more at the local library.

I was also privileged to have seen many of his half-hour TV presentations on spiritual topics…I learned so much about the depth of our Catholic faith from them! (Life is Worth Living).

I remember reading “Peace of Soul” and many others. Also his comments on the politics of the time were full of wisdom.

Up until now I have never really felt a connection to a particular saint or anyone who I could hold dear as a spiritual mentor in prayer. Well lately this man has been coming up everywhere I turn. I have really felt a calling to learn more of him and about him to increase the holiness in my life and especially the ministry which God has called me to as a deacon.

I had the honor of preaching this past weekend on the gospel where Jesus performed His first ministry and therefore began the public ministry of salvation of mankind which is His mission.

I used Archbishop Sheens writing on this gospel passage from “The Life of Christ” to prepare my homily. I worked quite a bit on this homily as always, but in the end I could not say it better than Archbishop Sheen himself, so I read it to the people. Needless to say, the congregation was captivated, so much theology wrapped up in this two page portion which I used.

This is an excerpt of what I read to the congregation;

“Thus He did at a marriage feast what He would not do in a desert; He worked in the full gaze of men what He had refused to do before Satan. Satan asked Him to turn stones into bread in order that He might become an economic Messiah; His mother asked Him to change water into wine that He might become a Savior. Satan tempted Him from death; Mary “tempted” Him to death and Resurrection. Satan tried to lead Him from the Cross; Mary sent Him toward it. Later on, He would take hold of the bread that Satan had said men needed, and the wine that His mother had said the wedding guests needed, and He would change them both into the memorial of His Passion and His death. Then He would ask that men renew that memorial, even “unto the consummation of the world.” The antiphon of His life continues to ring: Everyone else came into the world to live; He came into the world to die.”

I was born in 1966 so I’m too young to have watched most of his TV programs, but I can assure you my faith journey has just taken a new road; a path through the writings of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. Praise God!

I knew there was a reason I love your posts so much. 🙂

Now I know it’s because AB Sheen is your champion. He’s mine, too. If you watch some of the Youtube videos, you will also note that he had a tremendous gift for understanding the secular mind and had warnings, even back in the '50’s (I was a youngster then, of course) of the dangers of the “new” social justice and the negative political ramifications it would eventually have.

He was a great theologian and holy man of God. I must remember to pray for his cause for canonization.

(It’s a wonderful reflection on the realities of ordination in the Church – as applicable, I’d think, to deacons as to priests! It really does a wonderful job discussing servant leadership!)

(That reminds me… this Lent might be a good time for a re-read…!)

Thanks for this suggestion…I think I will order this one and The Life of Christ and start the journey into his writings there.
