I find that such conversations take a lot more time and effort than I have available - and usually bear little fruit, except that others “listening in” might gain some insight. As to the “agressive atheism” proponent, he is unlikely to listen to any sound arguments against his position.
Secondly - I just can’t quite take a conversation on a website called “nintendo-land” very seriously…But that’s just me.
I will offer to you a few thoughts though based on his post.
He says:
Religion fuels so much of the evil in the world. So many forms of bigotry have their roots in religion.
Homophobia, sectarian violence, suicide bombings and the list goes on.
Correction. SIN fuels these things, not religion.
As if that’s not enough, too many religious people want their views enshrined in law. They don’t just wish to have their religion, they want other people to be restricted like themselves. Religious freedom is great when it’s only their religion and no one is allowed to criticise.
In a free society - such as the United States - the morality of the people is reflected in the laws of the land. This means that people of faith have the exact same right to petition the government, introduce and/or support legislation that fits their world view and concepts of right and wrong as the atheist does.
In this, the desire to have “their views enshrined” is no different than atheists wanting their views enshrined.
The world needs aggressive atheism to get religion out of the courts and to stop people propagating bigotry that’s protected due to their beliefs. We need people to stop funding malicious organisations like the Catholic church. We need to stop religions trying to intervene in politics.
Why? Why are persons who believes in God to be excluded while those who don’t are to be included. Isn’t you desire here precisely the kind of bigotry and intolerance you are railing against the Churches for? It appears that you wish to have your views enshrined in Law so as to exclude those who do not agree with you having a voice.
I don’t know where you live but but if it is in a free democracy, you should recognize that you have the same rights and options as I do. To petition the government, to write to you rrepresentative, to support and promote your beliefs and to vote for whoever you believe will represent you the best and you have thr right to support whatever legislation you believe in.
Now - If you happen to be in a majority then you rview will hold sway. However if you are in a minority, others views will hold sway…This is the nature of democtratic rule.
This is not to say that the basic rights of others are not to be respected, but to ask people of faith to leave theri faith out of politics, or to try and legislate them out of politics is simply UnAmerican.
Just my 2 cents worth…
