Wow. Deep! Thank you! Where did you get that from, as I’ve never heard that before? Why Luke:20
You have been beaten, robbed, and left lying in the road. The world passes by without notice. The Lord Jesus Himself dismounts (incarnation), places you on His Mount (Holy Spirit), and brings you to the safety of the Inn(Holy, Mother, Teacher, Church). Why would anyone leave the safety of the Inn and risk being beaten and robbed in the desert?
You will be confronted by the same temptations(3) as your Master. You could starve, die of thirst, or wither in the heat. It is dark! Be sure you have plenty of oil in your lamp. That is, be certain it is the prompting of the Holy Spirit not vain curiosity! The Jesus prayer is not the path. It is a lifeline from the Inn to the Oasis. It has helped many, it may help you.
Do you know the three conditions for setting aside discursive meditation (St. John of the Cross)? There are infinite joys beyond contemplation. You know Him by His fruits! There is only one Way. He is not at the frontier of the cosmos. In Him you live and move and have your being. All are called. It is Simple.
Who would leave a conversation with G_D to have a conversation with man?

Some Catholic EC monasteries have practicing Hesaychasts… It’s not incompatible with Catholicism at all.
It is, however, not for everyone, and it’s a hard and risky path.
That is a great book. You should also consider checking out The Art of Prayer: An Orthodox Anthology. It is one of the best books out there on the topic of Eastern/Byzantine spirituality (although it is not focused particularly on the hesychastic tradition).Thread revival!
Seen, hesychast mentioned in a book i am reading, ‘Philokalia’ on prayer. Great book so far.
Thanks, i will check out that book. That is a great book. You should also consider checking out The Art of Prayer: An Orthodox Anthology. It is one of the best books out there on the topic of Eastern/Byzantine spirituality (although it is not focused particularly on the hesychastic tradition).
In all this talk on hesychasm it is important to bear in mind that it is not the only spiritual tradition of the East, and certainly not the only spiritual tradition of the Byzantine East. St. Theophan the Recluse offers a spirituality that is not so much hesychastic (although there is some battling of “thoughts”) as it is “wholistic.” In other words, he doesn’t emphasize the battle with “thoughts” so much as how the spiritual life as a whole is a struggle to bring our thoughts, passions, and actions into accord with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He, along with other Eastern/Byzantine authors I have read, focus a great deal more on the role of the Church and Sacramental life in our individual spiritual lives. Interestingly, St. Theophan barely even mentions the Jesus Prayer, and when he does it’s almost as an afterthought and not so much a main theme.
You will not regret it.Thanks, i will check out that book.
Edit: Just ordered that book!![]()
