Sola Scriptura? The Scriptura doesn’t even say that!
Instead the Bible (Scriptura) tells us to “obey our Bishops”, no where does it ever say: obey your Bible!!
Hebrew 13:17 Obey your prelates (that means “Bishops”) and be subject to them. For they watch as being to render an account of your souls: that they may do this with joy and not with grief. For this is not expedient for you.
2 Thess 3:14 If any one refuses to obey what we say in this letter, note that man, and have nothing to do with him, that he may be ashamed.
Matthew 18:17 RSVA
If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.
1 Timothy 3:15 RSVA
if I am delayed, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and bulwark of the truth.
And who gave us the “Scriptura” (Bible)? Why, the Church of course!!
Why follow the Church (Gods kingdom on earth shepherded by the Pope) rather than Sola Scriptura?
I am a devout Catholic, and Christ established the Church and her Doctrines. He is the King of kings, Lord of lords, and it is a Kingdom of God, not a democracy. The Church is the kingdom of God on earth, and as her members, we obey the King and His representative on earth (the Pope).
To better understand this aspect, a kingdom is ruled by a King. What he says IS. If you do not like the King’s ordinances and do not want His protection, then you are free to leave the safety of that kingdom and all it entails. You are on your own. That is your prerogative (free will).
As such, a King appointed (for life) a trusted “right hand man” - the Royal Steward. To this man was given the keys to the kingdom. (Recall that Jesus, our King, gave the keys to Peter). The keys opened and closed the gates to the kingdom, opened the royal treasury, and other doors. This “office” was so important that no one was permitted an audience with the king without first going through the Royal Steward. If he denied access to the king, then the person did not see the king. Furthermore, if the King was away, or indisposed, it was the Royal Steward who ran the kingdom and made sure the subjects were taken care of and followed the king’s ordinances. When the Royal Steward died, a successor was appointed: another loyal, trusted man was appointed as the King’s new Royal Steward and remained so until his death.
Thus, I belong to the Church because Jesus established her for the good of mankind and for our salvation. It is where we learn of the Gospel and Scriptures. We are to obey if we truly love God, and as a child is supposed to obey its parents, even though they don’t always understand “why” or think they (the child) knows better than the parent, bottom line: the loving, good, parent does know better than the child, and wants only what is best for that child. We are children of God, and do not always understand Our Father in heaven and why some things must be so for us to obey. But as children, we are immature when compared to the wisdom of God. He knows - we don’t.
As such, I freely choose to not only belong to God’s kingdom on earth, but to obey those God placed in authority. And that means ALL things - not just some even if I don’t fully understand. For who am I to question God’s wisdom and will? In the end, I want to ensure I remain part of His kingdom forever (Kingdom of Heaven). For not all who say “Lord, lord, and believe will enter”.
Mt 7:21 -
"Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.
