It’s not sufficient to impeach Trump to get him out. The Senate has to convict him as well and that has never happened to a President. Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton were the only presidents ever impeached and only Johnson came close to getting convicted. Conviction requires a 2/3 majority in the Senate. That’s 67 votes, the Democrats have 49 for the rest of this year unless there is a special election somewhere. I can’t imagine they’ll find 18 Republicans willing to go along. Something worse about Trump that is actually provably true would have to be found. No smoking gun so far, but that is certainly not from lack of effort.
 
I think the theory here is that overwhelming evidence of treasonous and criminal behavior on Trump’s part will be unearthed, and thus the Republicans will be forced to go along with Democrats in impeachment and then successful conviction in the Senate. And yes, I suppose if such damaging evidence that it both confirmed a set of treasonous or criminal actions, and that evidence was sufficiently compelling that it saw Trump’s base began to erode, there’s a possibility.

But it’s on the latter point where you lose me. What might be compelling evidence for a Democrat or even a moderate Republican might be a different thing for a more conservative Republican. And even if most Republican lawmakers believed he had to go, let’s remember here while the there is a trial in the Senate, it isn’t a criminal trial. Fundamentally, impeachment is a political process, so while there’s no doubt Senators would be reviewing evidence of wrongdoing, when they vote, they will still be voting as Senators, not as a jury, and Senators, unlike jurors, are politicians.

I think, unless the evidence is compelling and overwhelming, if anything happens, it would likely be more in line of some sort of contempt of Congress motion, rather than impeachment and removal. Such a motion doesn’t have any constitutional bite to it; the president is still the President, his powers remain intact, but if we are hypothesizing some incredibly damaging and well-founded evidence against the President, his political capital would likely plummet, and he would be in a much poorer position to push his own agenda, and it’s likely his own party would not nominate him as their candidate in 2020.

But honestly, I doubt even that’s going to happen. I think the Dems, even if they gain control of the House, or indeed somehow gain a majority in the Senate, will probably not be willing to go even to the point of some sort contempt motion.

You cant hold office again if you are impeached and removed.
Article 1 section 3:
Judgment in Cases of Impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from Office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any Office of honor, Trust or Profit under the United States: but the Party convicted shall nevertheless be liable and subject to Indictment, Trial, Judgment and Punishment, according to Law.
