It was impressive when in the early seventies the Fifth Estate, with the people of America on board, and everybody working in concert with the Congress; the most powerful person of the world was brought down for egregious behavior unbecoming of the office of the presidency.
This was a low point for America, but a high point for a free country based on checks on balances functioning as it was designed to function. Nobody, not even a POTUS, was deemed to be above the law.
It was a tough bicentennial to be sure in the wake of such a cataclysmic event, but less than a decade later America was surging ahead of the rest of the world and on a boom in economic initiative and confidence and gusto that was going to last longer than any boom in American history. The whole world rose to new heights on the strength of the wave that America generated.
If there is a watershed event that I might point to to indicate that the America of checks and balances that could peacefully oust a president was on the way out, I would say that it was the day that the IRS was exposed as using their office as a political tool against the Tea Party.
Initially, Obama came out prepared for full damage control, fully expecting a harsh kickback on such a story coming to light.
But in a twinkling, he found that that would be a totally unnecessary response. The free press buried the story. The American populace was lethargic and indifferent to the extent that it was not them that the IRS was going after. There was no interest whatsoever of getting to the bottom of this or correcting the system in any way.
The story was aborted quicker than a baby in Harlem.
That was the day, I think, when the system of checks and balances sculpted by the American Founding Fathers died.
And if there was any doubt that that system of checks and balances is as dead as a door nail, there cannot be any doubt now.
The story of the Clintons is not really just the story of the Undewoods of House of Cards. There, it is all about a corrupt and ruthless couple running roughshod over the system.
This is much worse. Here, it is the system itself that is corrupt.
The IRS is not there to provide a service to the people. The IRS exist to push a political agenda. The FBI is not there to serve justice. The FBI is there to protect the elites and enable them to whatever extent is needed. They are mere bodyguards for hire.
This is not just about an election.
Is there anything left that is even worth saving?
