Indeed, I do not recognize Elizabeth Windsor as the legal monarch of England. The last true King of England died in the Papal States in the early 19th C. (1807? About thereâŚ). His name was Henry Benedict Cardinal Stewart,(may he rest in peace), & the monarchies of England & Scotland both died with himâŚI suspect he would have been quite happy for this little Irish American girl to call him Cardinal Stewart. Orâwhat? Your grace? Your eminence? No problem. He was the servant of God, and entitled to my respect & affection as such.
I happen to agree with you. I hope that Mr Falwell may rest in peace. But he was not a man to inspire me with any affection; he was far too narrow in his understanding of what it means to be Christian.for better or worse he shaped American Politics and Fundamentalism into what it is today.
I believe he was sincere in his zealâeven if it was misplaced at times. And he died working. He was not very kind to Catholics tho. But still he was given more respect from us than the President showed the Holy Father, IMO.

I cannot imagine calling the pope anything other than Your Holiness!! The man is the servant of Almighty God. As a fellow Christian, at least, President Bush should have shown more respect. I hope it may have been a simple mistake, not a deliberate slightâŚ
On the other hand, I have to admit, that in dealing with even as respected a leader as the Dalai Lama, I would not call a non-Christian âYour Holinessâ. That would be, to me, a slap in the face of the God I love & attempt my poor best to serve.
I must tell you, that my dearly beloved late grandmother was an old-fashioned Methodist, & she followed the old custom of calling all members of Christian clergy âBrotherâ. If she had ever met the pope (&
she ,no doubt, knows many of them, in Heaven), she would have called him âBrotherâ until someone corrected herâŚNot out of any lack of respect; quite the opposite: it would have been, to her, the best possible compliment.But the President is another matter; he has advisors, who must surely have explained protocol!!

It is considered respectful enough to be used to address our Head of State (the President is referred to as Mr. President or sir), so I donât see it as being casual or paltry.While âsirâ is indeed a respectful term to used and is used often here in the American South (because weâre awesomely polite that way), it would seem a bit paltry for religious leaders like the pope.

Without intending any disrespect, I canât be quite that stingy with titles wherever they convey respect for the dignity of persons. Why, my own family has two princesses, and a queen, and yes they are referred to as such frequently. I doubt our heavenly queen minds.
