Vatican publishes details of plot to kidnap Pope and take him to Germany
US and British intelligence said Nazis would pretend to protect Pius XII
Rome got wind of the advanced plan and worked up contingency for Pope
He would have had to hide in a library for three days before being rescued
Thanks for posting that, Sean. I’m not sure what to make of this article, but Pius XII came very close to getting his brains blown out by the Nazis.

The church was deeply involved in the anti-Nazi underground all over Europe, and it wasn’t entirely secret.

Definitely puts a different twist on how you view Pius XII knowing the Nazis wanted him arrested. Puts a big dent in the too oft quoted “Hitler’s pope” idea.

Also as a side note, this would make for an interesting novel or movie going through the background of it. Perhaps even an interesting alternate history tale of the Nazis actually attempting his kidnapping, seeing as after the fact we know nothing came of it and the Pope remained relatively “safe” for the duration of the war.

There are have been a few movies already which touch on this.

Pius XII - Under the Roman Sky staring James Cromwell as Pope Pius XII was very well done and shows him during the Papacy.

God’s Mighty Servant is about a German Nun who works closely with the Pope when he was the Nuncio to Germany, then the Vatican Secretary of State, and finally when he was Pope. It details the role the Nun had as being his right arm in the effort to hide Jews in Convents and Monasteries throughout Rome (if not throughout Italy).

This is nonsense. My own research into the period provides nothing to corroborate this and no files or documents have been published that I’m aware of. Otto Skorzeny, Hitler’s top Commando, found the place where Mussolini was being kept in Italy when the British were saying they already had him in England. Not true. I have seen actual photographs of the immediate aftermath of the Mussolini rescue. The British press actually published a ‘well done’ regarding the operation by the Germans shortly after.

There would be no point in kidnapping the Pope. None. His alleged “spy network,” which never existed as described today, would immediately know. The German High Command respected the Pope and his anti-NAZI commentary was based on information from the people, not professional spies. The NAZI propaganda machine could not stop him.

$ 9.99 would be too much for us. I checked Amazon and christiancinema.com and neither has the Under the Roman Sky for streaming. Any other place?

I hope that this will show people that the Church opposed fascists during World War II.

Ask your public library if they have it or if they might get it for you via interlibrary loan. If enough people request it, it will be prioritized for purchase, and even if it is not purchased, inter-library loan should be able to bring it to your area.

You might also check with your parish to see if they have a video library and also with your archdiocese (our archdiocese has many resources which may be accessed).
May God bless you.
