Holding Hands and Kneeling

I said that the laity introducing innovations is what is unacceptable.
However, it has been said by people who know a great deal of Canon law as well as liturgical regulations, that since there is no regulation whatsoever for the hands during the Our Father, it is not an introduced innovation. It would be an innovation if there was a specific posture legislated, because there would then be a standard, and the hand holding would be at varience of the standard.

But there is no standard.

The good nuns taught us to kneel or stand with our hands palms together; whether that was legislated by Rome or legislated by the nuns I will leave to someone else to research. My guess is that it was legislated by the nuns, in part because it was not against the rules to hold a missal.

If there was no rule from Rome then, and there is none now, then it is purely a matter of personal preference. If you prefer to not hold hands, no one should make you do so.

On the other side, if you do wish to hold hands, no one should accuse you of making an innovation as there is no rule against which to innovate.

The church I attended this last Sunday doesn’t have any kneeling and the priest leads the parish in hand holding. One Sunday the priest told everyone to join hands to pray the Our Father. The homily tends to be polictical. My wife and I have been feeling increasingly uncomfortable and will try another Catholic church next Sunday.

Like many others have said I also simply keep my hands folded so no one will reach out and expect me to grab their hand.

Yikes! Based on what you said in your other thread and this post, I would strongly encourage you to RUN (running lawyer:) ) to another Parish!

Yes it is the same Parish I spoke about on my other thread. There were even other things that I have not mentioned. (Not to say that Parish doesn’t do good things. It strongly believes in reaching out to the poor, and the down and out. It is surely to be commended for that.)

Holding hands is one of the many luteran protestant ways we have incororated since vatican 11as well as standing and receiving in the hand which according to our Holy Father is the norm but not the prefered.

This thread is over three years old. Please, if you want to discuss this, start a new one.
