It goes both ways. One does not justify the opposite. Frankly, I wish it people would keep their hands to themselves. It makes me uncomfortable as well.
I’ve never been to a Catholic Church that asked us as a congregation to hold hands. But, During the “Our Father” my family and I hold hands. It should be and is a personal choice at the Churches I’ve attended.
I fold my hands and focus my gaze towards the tabernacle or upwards.
I don’t have a problem if people want to hold hands with each other. I did get slightly annoyed if they try to force me to hold hands with them, but no one has done that in recent memory.
I feel exactly as you do. I close my eyes with hands clasped. Once a man would not walk away long after the sign of peace. He must have been OCD or some mental disorder, so I gave in and though we were way past the time for it I shook his hand anyway just so he’d stop distracting everyone around us.
