Here are some more:

Dean Martin
Bill Murray
Al Molinaro (Happy Days)
Freddy Prinze, Sr.
Freddy Prinze, Jr.
Leslie Caron
Valerie Bertanelli
Babe Ruth
Amy Duncan (Tim Duncan’s wife–he is the power forrward for the Spurs)

Yep, we could do an Adam Sandler song.

Here are some Hollywood surprises:

Nathan Lane

Really? Is his husband Catholic, too?

That’s my problem with lists like this.

I don’t really care who is Catholic in the entertainment world. I don’t expect spiritual guidance from them. Don’t care about their politics either: I just want to be entertained.

Yet I still find it irritating that people like Lane [great entertainer, btw] scores brownie points of some kind for being Catholic when they clearly don’t walk the walk.

I got a little annoyed in the post way back when, wanting to bow out. I think the thing is, that whether or not someone is a practicing Catholic now-- having been raised a Catholic always seems to leave an impact on a person’s life-- good or bad, and sometimes we try to judge our fellow Catholics when we shouldn’t, sometimes we do it too harshly and often, we shouldn’t pay attention to anyone else’s spiritual journey but our own.

I know for a long time when I was away from the Church, I always identified as Catholic. I never wanted to be another religion (I had plenty of invitations from non-Catholic Christians to come visit their churches, 😜 but I never wanted to go because I knew there was nothing there for me.) Anyway, for me Catholicism ran deep within my culture-- maybe because I’m Hispanic and have always appreciated my culture and my ties to the faith. I always felt the Catholicism deep within me, despite the fact that I wasn’t actively practicing my faith. Now that I’ve been back, I appreciate it all so much more.

I also think there is something special about having been raised Catholic (besides the obvious stuff) and I think we see its influence through music, art, literature, TV/Movies. It’s a blog post I keep wanting to do, but never seem to sit down to actually do it.

And I’ve rambled a bit off topic. Let me see who else I can add to the ever-growing list to stay on point. Ok… I’m drawing a blank.

Patricia Heaton
Isn’t Ray Romano Catholic. I think so.
I read that she was born Catholic, but convert to another religion. I’m not sure if it was because of a divorce or some other cafeteria reason.

to her credited, I did read that she is courageously pro-life, which is difficult to be in Hollyweird.

Is it not possible to edit in these forums? If I knew how, I would edit the original post. I jumped the gun on this. Multiple people before me commented about her.

I do have one celb to add: Pierce Bronson. I don’t know if he is still practicing, but a California relative, saw him at a Mass.

Also Catholic was… I can’t think of his name… from Days of Our Lives, he was the man who said, “Like sand through the hour glass, so are the DoOL.”

Another soap opera Catholic is Maurice - drawing a blank on the last name. He plays sonny on General Hospital. The late John Berdino (aka/Dr. Steven Hardy). I know I spelled the name wrong.

I just watched an old film on TV. Let’s add Irene Dunne and Charles Boyer.
In the movie they were in a chapel and each performed the sign of the cross… as only long-time Catholics would do it.

Matthew
Irene Dunne was well known to be Catholic.

Being Catholic is a means of grace, forthe Church is the greatest sacrament, but we can refuse grace.

Matthew, the film you saw was Love Affair, directed by Leo McCarey in 1939. Wonderful old movie, isn’t it? 😉

Recently I was reading a French-language biography of Charles Boyer. He was brought up Catholic, lapsed as a young adult, but returned to practicing the faith when his wife, the English actress Pat Paterson, nearly died in childbirth. (He made a vow that he would attend Mass every Sunday and telephone his wife every afternoon if she were saved.) Sad ending, however: Boyer’s only child committed suicide at the age of 21 and some years later, Boyer himself took his own life two days after Pat Paterson died of cancer. Nevertheless, they are all buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, the Catholic cemetery in Culver City, California, which has quite a few Hollywood Catholics buried there. May the Boyer family rest in peace!

I think that I read somewhere that Kate Mulgrew is Catholic.
May God Bless.

Isn’t Faye Dunaway Catholic? Moira Kelly (who played the title role in the Dorothy Day biopic)? And Ed O’Neill (a.k.a. Al Bundy from “Married… With Children”)?

I’m not sure if her faith has anything do with it, but Faye Dunaway officially disowned “Mommie Dearest.”

Yes, good points, and I do like Nathan Lane in his movies and seems like a very personable guy…I have to say though, some of us feel like having admitted Catholics in Hollywood kind of helps spread the Gospel since these are high visiblity folks…just my 2 cents…

You can edit your posts, but I believe there is a small time limit or window in which you can do that in…

Jennie Garth (from 90210) converted when she married her husband and is practicing.

David Boreanez (sp) from Buffy and now Bones is a practicing Catholic - he mentions it in interviews from time to time. I have no idea how or why I know this, because I don’t really follow his career and barely have seen the shows he was on. I read in an article where he discussed explaining to his young son why he couldn’t yet recieve the Eucharist before his first communion and I thought it was pretty cool.

I was watching Dancing With The Stars and one day when practice was just getting started, I saw Edidta Slawinska quietly and quickly make the sign of the cross. [Sorry for misspelling her name.]

Bear Grillys [Man vs. Wild] frequently makes the sign of the cross just before skydiving into “the unknown”.

Liam Neeson is a great actor and a Roman Catholic (may the Lord comfort him in his time of grief). Julliette Binoche is a great actress and a Roman Catholic; in fact her grandparents were Polish Roman Catholic intellectuals who were killed in Auschwitz. The recently deceased Patrick Swayze was a Roman Catholic (may God bless and give peace to his soul). Obviously, film director Frank Capra was a Catholic (It’s A Wonderful Life). Curiously, however, the director of the Gospel epic,“The Greatest Story Ever Told”,
George Stevens…was not. I do not believe he was even a Christian.

Richard Davies (hope I got his name right) was in an interview on KBVM a while ago and is a practicing catholic. I best remember him as the boss on “The Profiler” series. He usually plays a bad guy but not so on this show. Does anyone know whom I am talking about and if I got the name correct:shrug:.:o?

Mark Wahlberg goes to daily Mass. Steve Carell is also Catholic.

By the way, Patricia Heaton’s sister is a nun. So is Bill Murray’s.

As someone who is in show business and who has lived both in Hollywood and New York, I find some of these comments disturbing. I echo other concerns in this thread regarding judgements made against people who sleep around, party, etc. I am not a perfect Catholic-it’s a goal I strive to obtain, but will very likely never reach. And I think it’s fair to say that everyone reading this thread is in the same boat. It would be charitable to give these entertainers the benefit of the doubt.

Also, if we aren’t going to give our brothers and sisters in showbiz the benefit of the doubt: the arguments comparing Hitler to any entertainer in this thread are ridiculous. Are some people really going to classify a person guilty of the so-called “Hollywood lifestyle” in the same category as a man who murdered millions?
